8 days · Hungary, Austria, Slovenia & Croatia

Intrepid Travel charges £1,990

£1,300saved per person (65%)

No-markup version: ~£690 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Intrepid's 8-day Budapest–Graz–Ljubljana–Bled–Zagreb Christmas market run. You cover the same route by train and bus, stay in hostels and budget guesthouses, and join free or small-group walking tours instead of a tour leader. Budapest's Vörösmarty Square fair, Graz's Schlossberg Christmas village, Ljubljana's riverside market, a Lake Bled day trip and Zagreb's Advent festival are all self-bookable — and you'll pay roughly a third of the guided tour price. Note: market dates vary year to year; most run from mid-November to early January, and Advent in Zagreb and Ljubljana typically start late November.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Budapest — Danube by night

Budapest

Land at Ferenc Liszt Airport and take the 100E airport bus (about £2.50, buy a 72-hour or weekly travel card at the kiosk) into the city centre. Check into a hostel or budget hotel in District VII or VIII. Spend the late afternoon wandering Andrássy út toward Heroes' Square and catch the sunset from Fisherman's Bastion on the Buda side (free to walk the terraces outside the tower). Evening: stroll the illuminated Danube embankment between Parliament and the Chain Bridge, then test out one of the ruin pubs in the Jewish Quarter — Szimpla Kert is the classic first stop.

Budapest Christmas Fair & thermal baths

Budapest

Join the free Budapest walking tour (tip-based, 10:30am from Vörösmarty Square) for an orientation of the Pest side, then dive into the Vörösmarty Square Christmas Fair — the city's oldest and biggest. Graze your way through: kürtőskalács (chimney cake), goulash in a bread bowl and a mug of mulled wine, roughly £12-15 for a full feed. In the afternoon take tram 1 or the M1 metro out to City Park for ice skating in front of Vajdahunyad Castle (entry plus skate hire around £12), or book a thermal bath session at Széchenyi (outdoor pools, ~£22). Evening: St Stephen's Basilica light show (free, on the hour) and the smaller markets at Deák Ferenc tér and Erzsébet tér.

Graz

Take the morning Railjet from Budapest Keleti to Graz Hauptbahnhof — about 5 hours direct, book 2-3 weeks ahead on ÖBB or MÁV for €25-40. Drop bags at your hostel near the Hauptplatz and walk into the old town, a UNESCO-listed cluster of arcaded courtyards. Ride the Schlossberg funicular up (around £5 return) to the hilltop Christmas market and the Uhrturm clock tower for city views. Optional: the 64m indoor slide down the Schlossberg is about £7 and slightly absurd in the best way. Finish at the Hauptplatz market with a Glühwein and a styrian pumpkin-seed-oil dish.

Day 4

Graz to Ljubljana — riverside Advent

Ljubljana

Morning bus or train to Ljubljana. FlixBus runs direct in about 2.5 hours for £10-15; the train requires a change at Maribor but is scenic. Check into a hostel in the old town or near the station. Join the free Ljubljana walking tour (11am, tip-based) to get oriented around Prešeren Square, the Triple Bridge and the castle. Then hit the Christmas market strung along the Ljubljanica river — smaller and more local than Budapest's, heavy on sausages, štruklji and mulled wine. In the evening walk up to Ljubljana Castle (or take the funicular, ~£6) for the lit-up city, and finish at Metelkova Mesto, the former barracks turned alternative arts squat with murals and late bars.

Day 5

Day trip to Lake Bled

Lake Bled

Take the local bus or train from Ljubljana to Bled (about 1h15, £5-7 each way — buses leave from the main bus station roughly hourly). Pick your activity: the 6km lakeside loop is free and takes about 1.5 hours at a stroll; the climb to Ojstrica viewpoint takes 20-25 minutes up for the postcard shot of the island church; or pay the ~£15 entry to Bled Castle for the museum and terrace views. A pletna boat out to the island is about £15 if you're feeling indulgent. Return to Ljubljana in the evening for market food and an early night.

Ljubljana to Zagreb — Advent in Zagreb

In the late afternoon join a tip-based walking tour of the Christmas markets (Free Spirit Walking Tours and similar run seasonal versions) or just self-guide: start at Ban Jelačić Square, walk the stalls along Bogovićeva and Zrinjevac, then up to St Mark's Church and the Stone Gate. Sample mulled wine, fritule and kobasice. There's an outdoor ice rink at Zrinjevac and live music on the main stage most nights.

Day 7

Mt Medvednica & traditional Croatian lunch

Zagreb / Mt Medvednica

Take tram 14 or 8 to the Črnomerec terminus, then the local bus up to Sljeme (or the cable car from Gračani, around £6 return) for the Medvednica summit. The cable car is the easiest option and puts you at the top in a few minutes. From Sljeme there's a straightforward 1-2 hour forest walk along marked trails — bring proper shoes, there can be snow in December. For the traditional lunch the tour includes, book a table at a mountain lodge (planinarski dom) up on Medvednica or back in Zagreb; sarma, grah and štrukli will run £12-16 with a drink. Back in town, do a final loop of the Advent markets after dark.

🚌Tram + local bus or cable car to Sljeme (~£8)

🛏Hostel dorm or budget hotel (~£32/night)

  • →Tram and bus to Sljeme (or cable car)

Zagreb

Last morning for coffee on Tkalčićeva and any market gifts you didn't buy. Zagreb Airport is 30-40 minutes away by the ZET bus from the main bus station (about £6) or a shared shuttle. If you're continuing, Zagreb is well connected to Split, Zadar and Vienna by bus and train. Budget for a final market breakfast of krafne and a coffee before you go.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Europe Christmas Markets: Budapest to Zagreb (Self-Launched) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £690 per person for 8 days in Hungary, Austria, Slovenia & Croatia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Intrepid Travel?+

Yes — Intrepid Travel charges around £1,990 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £690 — a saving of roughly £1,300 (65%) per person.

How long is the Hungary, Austria, Slovenia & Croatia trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Hungary, Austria, Slovenia & Croatia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a festivals, culture, city-breaks trip through Hungary, Austria, Slovenia & Croatia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
