A self-launched version of G Adventures' 4-day Iguassu Falls Independent Adventure — Upgraded. Base yourself in Puerto Iguazú (Argentina) and cross into Brazil to see the falls from both sides. Instead of private transfers and an upgraded hotel, you'll use the local bus, book park tickets direct or via official channels, and stay in a well-rated guesthouse or hostel private room a short walk from the bus terminal. Two full days at the falls = panoramic Brazilian views day one, jungle walkways and the Garganta del Diablo catwalk on the Argentine side day two. Optional extras like the jet boat and helicopter can be booked on the ground. Costs are approximate, based on current budget-traveller rates, and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Puerto Iguazú and settle in

Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Land at Puerto Iguazú (Argentina) or Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) airport. From Puerto Iguazú airport, the local Rio Uruguay bus (line 8, ~£1) or a shared taxi/remis (~£6-8 split between two) gets you to the town centre in 20-25 minutes — far cheaper than a private transfer. If you fly into Brazil, take the cross-border bus or a remis to Puerto Iguazú (border formalities are straightforward, keep your passport handy). Check into a guesthouse or hostel private room a short walk from the main bus terminal. Spend the afternoon orienting yourself: pick up an Argentine SIM/eSIM, change a little cash (bring clean USD notes and also withdraw ARS at ATMs), and walk to the Hito Tres Fronteras viewpoint where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet. Book your Brazilian-side park ticket online that evening for tomorrow. Eat dinner at one of the affordable parrillas or set-menu restaurants along Avenida Victoria Aguirre.

Day 2

Brazilian side: panoramic views and Iguassu Bird Park

Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil

Catch the local bus from Puerto Iguazú terminal to the Brazilian park entrance (the 'Parque Nacional' bus, roughly £2-3 each way; remember to sort any required Brazilian visa in advance — UK/EU passports are currently visa-free for tourism but check before travel). Pay the Brazilian park entrance fee on arrival or pre-buy online (approx £16-18). Walk the Panoramic Trail from the visitor centre out along the canyon rim, ending at the elevated catwalk into the Devil's Throat mist — the classic wide-angle view of the whole 275-fall system. Allow 3-4 hours. Optional: add the Iguassu Bird Park next door (~£12) with its walk-through aviaries of toucans and macaws. Optional: book a helicopter flight over the falls on the spot if you want the aerial view (approx £100-130). Take the bus back across the border in the afternoon and have a relaxed evening in town.

Day 3

Argentine side: jungle walkways, Garganta del Diablo and jet boat

Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Take the local bus from Puerto Iguazú terminal to the Argentine park entrance (approx £1.50 each way, ~30 min). Pay the Argentine park entrance (~£18-20, higher for foreign visitors) and ride the free park eco-train to the Garganta del Diablo trailhead, then walk the 1.1km metal catwalk over the river to stand right above the thundering Devil's Throat. Back at the central station, walk the Upper and Lower circuits through the jungle — expect coatis, capuchin monkeys and dozens of butterflies. Optional: book the Gran Aventura jet boat ride direct at the park or in town (~£35-45) for a soaking pass at the base of the falls — bring a dry bag. Optional: add the San Martín Island boat if it's running. Return to town late afternoon; dinner and an early night.

Day 4

Departure day

Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Breakfast at the guesthouse, then take the local bus or a shared remis to Puerto Iguazú airport or across to Foz do Iguaçu for onward flights. If you have a late flight, a lazy morning at the Güira Oga wildlife refuge (~£8) or a coffee by the river is a good last stop. Remember Brazil charges a departure tax on some tickets and Argentina as well — check whether it's already included in your airfare.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Iguassu Falls Self-Launched Adventure: Both Sides of the Falls cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £415 per person for 4 days in Iguassu Falls (Argentina & Brazil). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £950 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £415 — a saving of roughly £535 (56%) per person.

How long is the Iguassu Falls (Argentina & Brazil) trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Iguassu Falls (Argentina & Brazil).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, budget, backpacker trip through Iguassu Falls (Argentina & Brazil), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
