Self-Launched Istanbul Mini Adventure: Old City, Street Food & Two Continents

Self-Launched Istanbul Mini Adventure: Old City, Street Food & Two Continents

4 days · Istanbul, Turkey

G Adventures charges £495

£25saved per person (5%)

No-markup version: ~£470 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of G Adventures' 4-day "Classic Istanbul Mini Adventure" — same Sultanahmet highlights, the same underground Roman/Byzantine ruins, the same Taksim–Karaköy food crawl and the ferry hop to Asia, but booked yourself. Base yourself in a Sultanahmet hostel or budget guesthouse, buy a Museum Pass, book a small-group food tour via GetYourGuide/Klook (or just self-guide it), and use the tram, ferry and your feet instead of a CEO. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive, settle into Sultanahmet & street-food crawl

Istanbul (Sultanahmet)

Land at Istanbul Airport (IST) and take the Havaist bus to Aksaray/Sultanahmet (~£3, 60–75 mins) or a shared shuttle; from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) the Havabüs to Kadıköy/Taksim runs ~£3.50. Check into a Sultanahmet hostel or budget guesthouse. In the late afternoon do your own orientation loop on foot: Hippodrome square, the exterior of the Blue Mosque, and down to Gülhane Park. As dusk falls, eat your way along the street-food strip — balık ekmek (fish sandwich) by Eminönü, simit from a cart, lahmacun and künefe in Sirkeci — for roughly £6–9 total. If you want company on day one, most Sultanahmet hostels run a free evening walk or you can join a cheap GetYourGuide 'Istanbul street food night' small-group tour (~£30) as the self-booked equivalent of the operator's included street-food dinner.

🚌Havaist airport bus ~£3 + walking and tram

🛏Hostel dorm or budget guesthouse in Sultanahmet (~£25–35/night)

  • →Self-guided Old Town orientation walk
  • →Hippodrome Square and Blue Mosque exterior
  • →Gülhane Park at sunset
  • →Street food crawl: balık ekmek, simit, lahmacun, künefe

Day 2

Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern & the underground Old City

Istanbul (Sultanahmet)

Pre-book your Hagia Sophia timed entry online the night before (entry ~£22 for foreign visitors; the upstairs gallery is the quietest spot). Then do the 'lesser-known Old Town' loop yourself: the Basilica Cistern (book a skip-the-line slot on GetYourGuide/Klook, ~£20), the Hippodrome's obelisks and German Fountain, and the small Küçük Ayasofya Mosque (Little Hagia Sophia) tucked behind the walls — free, rarely busy, and lovely. If you'd rather have context, a 2-hour small-group Old City walking tour costs ~£25–30 and covers the same ground. Lunch on çiğ köfte and pide near Arasta Bazaar (~£5). In the evening, opt for a hammam — the historic Çemberlitaş Hamamı (~£30–45) is walkable and cheaper than the big tourist baths.

🚌All on foot; tram T1 for any longer hops (~£0.60/ride with Istanbulkart)

Day 3

Taksim–Karaköy food crawl then ferry to Asia

Istanbul (Beyoğlu & Kadıköy)

Ride the T1 tram and the Tünel funicular up to Taksim Square, then walk down İstiklal Caddesi into Karaköy, grazing as you go: baklava by the kilo at Karaköy Güllüoğlu (~£3), Turkish coffee at a third-wave café (~£2.50), a profiterole stop and a mezze lunch in Karaköy (~£8–10). Book a 3-hour small-group 'Istanbul street food' tour on GetYourGuide or Klook (~£45) if you want the guided version, or DIY it with a list — much cheaper. Afterwards walk to Karaköy pier and take the public ferry across the Bosphorus to Kadıköy on the Asian side (~£0.60 with Istanbulkart, 20 mins), then explore the Kadıköy market streets and Moda seafront. Ferry back at sunset for the skyline views.

Day 4

City walls, mosaics or a Bosphorus cruise — then depart

Istanbul

If your flight is later, do a DIY version of the operator's optional 'Colourful Istanbul + Bosphorus Cruise' day: take the tram to Yedikule or walk the old land walls near Ayvansaray, visit the Chora Church mosaics (check opening — the frescoes section may be a museum or mosque, entry ~£10), poke around Balat's colourful Jewish quarter streets, then take the short public Bosphorus hop from Eminönü to Ortaköy or the full 90-minute Turyol short cruise (~£6). Grab a final kumpir or a fish sandwich and head to the airport by Havaist bus (~£3). If you're continuing overland, the tram to Yenikapı connects to Marmaray and the main rail/bus hubs.

🛏None — depart (or extend a night ~£25–35)

  • →Old city walls and Balat/Fener neighbourhoods
  • →Chora Church mosaics (entry ~£10)
  • →Public Bosphorus cruise (~£6)
  • →Optional: full-day guided Istanbul walking tour + Bosphorus cruise ~£55–70

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Istanbul Mini Adventure: Old City, Street Food & Two Continents cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £470 per person for 4 days in Istanbul, Turkey. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £495 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £470 — a saving of roughly £25 (5%) per person.

How long is the Istanbul, Turkey trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Istanbul, Turkey.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a city-breaks, foodie, culture trip through Istanbul, Turkey, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
