No-markup version: ~£965 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched version of Explore!'s 8-day Rome–Pompeii–Amalfi–Sorrento group tour. You'll cover exactly the same ground — Colosseum and Roman Forum, Vesuvius crater hike, Pompeii ruins, the Path of the Lemons, Amalfi and a Sorrento lemon grove — but travelling by Italy's excellent public trains, buses and ferries and staying in hostels, guesthouses and budget B&Bs. Book the big-ticket sites (Colosseum, Pompeii, Vesuvius) direct or via GetYourGuide/Klook in advance, and let the rest happen on the day. Costs are approximate backpacker/mid-budget rates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Rome — fountains, piazzas and an evening walk

Rome

Land at Fiumicino (FCO) and take the Leonardo Express train into Termini (~€14 / £12, 32 mins) or the slower FL1 regional to Trastevere/Ostiense (~€8). Check into a hostel dorm or private room in Monti, Trastevere or near Termini. Spend the late afternoon on a free, self-led wander: Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon (free to enter, €5 optional booking), Piazza Navona and Piazza di Spagna. Book your Colosseum ticket online tonight for tomorrow, and pre-book the Vatican Museums at biglietteriamusei.vatican.va if you want to squeeze it in (allow 3+ hours, €20+).

Ancient Rome — Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill

Rome

Pre-book a combined Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill ticket direct from the official Parco Colosseo site (€18 + €2 booking) or a small-group GetYourGuide tour (~£35-45) if you want the stories explained. Aim for the first slot of the day to beat the heat and queues; the full loop takes 3-4 hours. Afternoon: free time for a street-side espresso (€1.20 standing) and gelato, or climb the Capitoline Hill for the view over the Forum. Evening: cheap trattoria dinner in Testaccio or Monti — cacio e pepe and a glass of house wine for under £20.

Day 3

High-speed train south, Vesuvius crater hike and vineyard lunch

Pompeii

Take a Frecciarossa/Italo high-speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale (~1h10, £25-40 booked in advance) — the operator's Afragola stop is just a variant of the same route. From Naples, hop the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Pompeii Scavi (~35 mins, €3.30 / £3). Drop bags at a guesthouse near the ruins. In the afternoon, get to Vesuvius: bus/tour transfer from Pompeii to the 1,000m car park (Vesuvio Express shuttle ~€22 return including park entry, or a GetYourGuide half-day trip ~£35) then walk the 30-40 min trail to the crater rim — stunning Bay of Naples views. Optional: a Lacryma Christi tasting at a Vesuvian vineyard (Villa dei Misteri / Sorrentino wineries, ~£20-25 with lunch) instead of or after the climb.

🚌Roma Termini → Napoli Centrale high-speed train, then Circumvesuviana to Pompeii Scavi

🛏Family-run guesthouse or B&B in Pompeii (~£30-35/night)

  • →Mount Vesuvius crater hike
  • →Vineyard wine tasting and lunch (optional, book direct)
~£150
Day 4

Pompeii ruins, then the coast to Maiori

Maiori

Book a Pompeii entry ticket with the official site (€18) and either self-guide with the free audio app or join a 2-hour GetYourGuide/Klook guided walk (~£20-25) — the House of the Vettii, Temple of Jupiter and the Forum are the highlights. Allow 3-4 hours. Mid-afternoon, head to the coast: Circumvesuviana to Sorrento then SITA bus along the Amalfi Drive to Amalfi and on to Maiori (~1.5-2 hrs total, ~£6), or ferry from Castellammare/Salerno in season. Base yourself in Maiori — cheaper and quieter than Amalfi or Positano. Sunset on the lungomare with a pizza.

🚌Circumvesuviana to Sorrento + SITA Sud bus along the Amalfi Coast to Maiori

🛏Guesthouse/B&B in Maiori, 5-10 min walk from the seafront (~£45-55/night)

  • →Maiori seafront

Day 5

Path of the Lemons, Minori and Amalfi

Maiori / Amalfi

Do the same hike the tour does, independently: the Sentiero dei Limoni from Maiori to Minori is a free, waymarked 2.5 km path through terraced lemon groves, about an hour with stairs and stone steps — start early to avoid midday heat and wear proper shoes. In Minori, grab a sfogliatella at Sal De Riso. Take the seasonal ferry or the local bus from Minori to Amalfi (~€3-4 / 15 mins). Explore Amalfi's Duomo di Sant'Andrea, the paper museum and the Valley of the Mills viewpoint, and swim at the beach. Optional late-afternoon bus or ferry to Positano (~£3-6) for golden hour. Total walking is significant — 10,000+ steps.

Day 6

Lemon grove visit and on to Sorrento

Sorrento

Morning: visit a Sorrento-area lemon farm for a cultivation talk and tasting of lemon oil and limoncello — book direct with an agriturismo such as Il Giardino di Vigliano or a GetYourGuide 'lemon grove experience' (~£20-30). Reach it by SITA bus from Amalfi to Sorrento (~1h20, ~£4), which passes right through the peninsula's lemon country. Check into a budget hotel or guesthouse near Piazza Tasso. Afternoon: Chiesa di San Francesco, the cloister, Piazza Tasso, the old city gates and Marina Grande for a sunset spritz. The Circumvesuviana station is 5 minutes' walk for tomorrow's plans.

  • →Lemon grove visit and limoncello tasting

Day 7

Capri by hydrofoil

Sorrento / Capri

Buy a return hydrofoil ticket from Sorrento's Marina Piccola to Capri (~€40-46 return, 20 mins each way — book with SNAV/Caremar on the day or online). On Capri, skip the expensive organised excursion: take the local bus up to Anacapri (€2.40), visit Villa San Michele (~€10) and the chairlift to Monte Solaro (~€14), then bus down to Capri town for the Gardens of Augustus and the Faraglioni viewpoint. The Blue Grotto boat trip runs ~€20 plus entry when seas allow. Return to Sorrento for dinner — eating on Capri is pricey. Alternative: a Path of the Gods hike from Bomerano if you'd rather have a big walking day.

🚌Return hydrofoil Sorrento-Capri; local buses on Capri

🛏Budget hotel or guesthouse in central Sorrento

  • →Capri and Anacapri
  • →Villa San Michele

Day 8

Sorrento morning and onward travel

Sorrento

Final breakfast, a last wander through Sorrento's artisan shops for inlaid wood and limoncello, then depart. Cheapest route to Naples airport: Circumvesuviana to Napoli Centrale then the Alibus shuttle to NAP (~€5, total ~£8, 1h30), or a shared Curreri Viaggi bus direct from Sorrento to NAP (~€10). Heading to Rome instead? Circumvesuviana + high-speed train, ~2h, £25-40. No departure transfer needed — public transport covers it comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Rome, Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £965 per person for 8 days in Italy. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Explore!?+

Yes — Explore! charges around £2,350 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £965 — a saving of roughly £1,385 (59%) per person.

How long is the Italy trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Italy.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, hiking, foodie trip through Italy, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
