A self-launched take on G Adventures' 7-day catamaran sailing trip around Sri Lanka's remote northern islands (Palk Bay and Palk Strait). Instead of chartering a 16m sailing catamaran with skipper and cook, you base yourself in Jaffna and island-hop to Nagadeepa (Nainativu), Delft, Kayts/Karainagar and Kakerativu the way locals do — on the public ferry to Kurikkaduwan Jetty, shared navy-run passenger boats, buses and the odd hired tuk-tuk — mixing Tamil temple visits, Dutch colonial ruins, coral reefs, deserted beaches and fishing villages with home-cooked Tamil lunches. It's a slower, less glamorous version of the same trip (and you'll miss the evening sails and on-board cook), but the islands themselves, the people and the food are exactly the same — for roughly a quarter of the price. Costs are approximate, based on budget/backpacker rates.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Jaffna — Tamil north welcome

Jaffna

Fly or take the train/bus up to Jaffna (the overnight train from Colombo Fort to Jaffna is the classic approach, ~£6-10 second class, book via the Sri Lanka Railways website or at the station; a private minivan transfer from Colombo is ~£80-100 shared). Check into a guesthouse in the Nallur or town centre area. In the late afternoon walk to Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil (cover shoulders and knees), then eat a Jaffna crab curry or a vegetarian thali at a local hotel restaurant (~£2-3). Sort tomorrow's ferry tickets and confirm boat timings — northern island ferries are weather-dependent, so build in flexibility.

🚌Overnight train Colombo–Jaffna ~£6-10, or shared van ~£10-15 pp

🛏Guesthouse in Jaffna town (double room, ~£15-20/night, or £8-10 dorm)

  • →Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil
  • →Jaffna town wander & market
  • →Jaffna crab curry dinner
~£45
Day 2

Kurikkaduwan Jetty & Nagadeepa temples

Nainativu / Nagadeepa

Take a local bus or tuk-tuk from Jaffna to Kurikkaduwan Jetty (~£1-2, 45 min) — the same jetty the sailing tour departs from. Hop the public passenger boat across to Nainativu island (~£1-2 return, 20-30 min; timings change with the weather and tide, so ask at the jetty the day before). Visit Nagapooshani Amman Temple and the Buddhist Nagadeepa Viharaya — respectful dress required, no Buddha-image clothing. Swim and wander the quiet shoreline, grab a rice-and-curry lunch from a small island eatery (~£2), then boat back and bus to Jaffna for the evening.

Day 3

Delft Island — Dutch forts and wild ponies

Delft Island (Neduntheevu)

Catch the morning navy-run passenger ferry from Kurikkaduwan Jetty to Delft Island (~£1-2, 1-1.5 hrs; there's also a vehicle ferry from Kayts). On Delft, hire a tuk-tuk driver for a half-day loop (~£8-10 shared between 2-3 people) to see the Dutch Fort ruins, the coral-walled Dutch stables, the growing rock, the Baobab tree and the wild Delft ponies. Have a fresh seafood lunch cooked by an island family (~£4-5). Back to Jaffna in the late afternoon. If ferries are cancelled, swap in a day at Kayts and Karainagar instead.

🚌Passenger ferry to Delft ~£2 return; shared tuk-tuk tour on island ~£4 pp

Day 4

Kayts, Karainagar & Kakerativu reef

Kayts / Karainagar / Kakerativu

Take the causeway road (bus or shared tuk-tuk, ~£2-3) out to Kayts and on to Karainagar, stopping at Hammenheil Fort and the Portuguese-era ruins around Kayts. From Karainagar arrange a local fisherman's boat out to the coral reef off Kakerativu Island for snorkelling (~£10-15 for a boat, split between a few people; bring your own mask or rent one in Jaffna). Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding can be arranged informally through guesthouses or beach operators at Casuarina Beach on Karainagar (~£8-12/hr) — always with a local guide and at your own risk. Sunset at Casuarina Beach, dinner back in Jaffna.

🚌Bus/tuk-tuk via Kayts causeway ~£3; local fishing boat to reef ~£5-8 pp

Day 5

Adam's Bridge & Talaimannar sands

Talaimannar / Adam's Bridge

Head west to Talaimannar via Mannar (bus or shared van, ~3-4 hrs, £3-5). Walk out to the start of Adam's Bridge (Ram Setu) — the chain of shoals stretching toward India — and the nearby fishing settlements. It's a half-day of dusty travel each way for a genuinely remote, end-of-the-road landscape; keep expectations realistic and check road and security conditions locally before setting out. Late lunch in Mannar (fish curry, ~£3), then return to Jaffna for the night, or overnight in Mannar if you prefer to split the journey.

🚌Bus Jaffna–Mannar–Talaimannar ~£4 each way

🛏Guesthouse in Jaffna town (~£15-20)

  • →Adam's Bridge viewpoint
  • →Mannar fishing village
  • →Mannar Fort (optional)

Day 6

Jaffna city, Tamil home lunch & islands by tuk-tuk

Jaffna

A gentler day in town: the Jaffna Fort, the Jaffna Library, the archaeological museum and the Nallur area. Book a home-cooked Tamil lunch through your guesthouse or a local cooking host (~£5-8, often arranged informally — ask the day before) — the closest self-launched equivalent to the tour's lunch in a Tamil home. In the afternoon, hire a tuk-tuk for a couple of hours to the Jaffna Peninsula's lagoon islands, or take a local boat trip in the Jaffna Lagoon mangroves (~£5-8). Evening: try Jaffna-style dosa or a seafood dinner at a local hotel restaurant (~£3).

🚌Tuk-tuk hire in town ~£6-8 for 2 hrs

🛏Guesthouse in Jaffna town (~£15-20)

Jaffna

Breakfast at the guesthouse, then onward transport — the daytime or overnight train back to Colombo (~£6-10), or a flight from Jaffna's Palaly airport to Colombo (~£35-50 if booked early). If you have time, a final morning at the Jaffna market for Tamil sweets and coffee before you go.

🚌Train Jaffna–Colombo ~£6-10, or Palaly–Colombo flight ~£35-50

Frequently asked questions

How much does Sailing Sri Lanka's North Coast — Self-Launched Island Hopper cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £315 per person for 7 days in Jaffna & the Northern Islands, Sri Lanka. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,200 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £315 — a saving of roughly £1,885 (86%) per person.

How long is the Jaffna & the Northern Islands, Sri Lanka trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Jaffna & the Northern Islands, Sri Lanka.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, beaches trip through Jaffna & the Northern Islands, Sri Lanka, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
