Essential Jordan: Dead Sea & Desert Stars — Self-Launched
8 days · Jordan
G Adventures charges £890
No-markup version: ~£395 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
An 8-day loop of Jordan's greatest hits done independently: float in the Dead Sea, walk the Siq into Petra at dawn, sleep in a Bedouin camp under the stars in Wadi Rum, snorkel the Red Sea in Aqaba, and finish with the mosaics of Madaba and views from Mount Nebo. The original is a G Adventures 18-to-Thirtysomethings small-group trip with a CEO, private minivan and hotels; here you'll use JETT and local minibuses, book Petra and Wadi Rum direct, and stay in hostels and budget guesthouses. Costs are approximate per-person estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.
Day-by-day
Arrive Amman — settle into Downtown
Amman
Land at Queen Alia International Airport and take the airport shuttle bus (Sariyah Express, ~3.5 JOD) or a shared taxi (~20 JOD fixed price, best split between a few travellers) into the city. Base yourself in Downtown Amman near Hashemite Plaza — hostels here are cheap and central. Get a Jordan Pass online before you fly (from ~70 JOD, includes your visa fee and Petra entry — this is the single biggest money-saver). In the evening, eat falafel and hummus at Hashem Restaurant, then climb the steps to the Roman Theatre and wander the souk on Al-Hashemi Street.

Amman to the Dead Sea (and the lowest point on Earth)
Dead Sea / Wadi Musa
The Dead Sea is easiest reached from Amman by local minibus to Suweimeh or by booking a shared day transfer through your hostel (~10-15 JOD return per person) — agree the price before you get in. Pay the public Amman Beach / Dead Sea beach entrance (~15-20 JOD) rather than a resort day pass, slather on the mineral mud, and float. Rinse off with fresh water before you leave — the salt stings. Lunch at a small local cafe in the Jordan Valley, then in the afternoon take the JETT bus or a shared service taxi south along the King's Highway toward Wadi Musa (Petra). The JETT from Amman to Petra runs ~8-10 JOD, roughly 3.5 hours. Check in at a budget guesthouse in Wadi Musa and buy supplies for an early start.
🚌Shared minibus/taxi to Dead Sea then JETT or service taxi to Wadi Musa (~10-18 JOD total)

Petra — through the Siq at dawn
Wadi Musa (Petra)
Be at the Petra visitor centre for opening (6am in summer) — you'll have the Siq almost to yourself. Walk the 1.2km gorge, watch the Treasury appear at the end, then climb the 800 steps to the Monastery (Ad Deir) and take the trail up to the High Place of Sacrifice for the view. Petra entry is covered by your Jordan Pass. If you want a guide, licensed local guides wait at the visitor centre (~50 JOD for a half-day, split between a few travellers), or use a self-guided audio/app route and guidebook. Shops inside Petra sell tea and snacks — bring cash and 2L of water. Optional evening: Petra by Night runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (~17 JOD) — buy at the gate.
🚌Walking from town to the visitor centre (10-15 min) or a 2 JOD local taxi
🛏Wadi Musa budget guesthouse, private twin or dorm
- →Petra full-day entry via Jordan Pass
- →Siq walk to the Treasury
- →Monastery climb and High Place of Sacrifice trail
- →Optional Petra by Night (~17 JOD)
Little Petra and a night in a Wadi Rum Bedouin camp
Wadi Rum
Morning trip to Siq al-Barid (Little Petra), ~15 minutes north of Wadi Musa — entry is free with the Jordan Pass and it's a quiet, carved-rock mini-Petra. Local taxis or a shared minibus from Wadi Musa cost ~5-8 JOD return. Mid-morning, head south to Wadi Rum village by minibus/service taxi (~5-7 JOD, 1.5 hours) or arrange a shared transfer through your Petra guesthouse. Book a Bedouin camp direct (many have websites and WhatsApp; dorm or tent ~12-18 JOD including dinner and breakfast) and add a 4x4 desert tour — 2 hours is ~20-25 JOD per person shared, 4 hours ~35-40 JOD. Watch the sun set from a dune, then eat zarb (sand-baked meat and rice) around the fire and lie out under the stars.
🚌Shared taxi to Little Petra, minibus/service taxi to Wadi Rum village (~12 JOD total)
🛏Bedouin desert camp in Wadi Rum, tent/dorm (dinner and breakfast included)

Wadi Rum to Aqaba — Red Sea and snorkelling
Aqaba
Early jeep transfer back to the village, then a local minibus or service taxi south to Aqaba (~3-5 JOD, about 1 hour). Check into a budget hotel or hostel near the beach and spend the afternoon on the Red Sea. Book a snorkelling or dive trip direct from the beach or a dive shop on the South Beach (~20-25 JOD for a boat trip with gear and lunch) — the Japanese Garden and Seven Sisters reef sites are the classics. Alternatively, snorkel from the shore at the Aqaba Marine Park for the cost of gear rental. Evening: fresh fish and mezze at a local restaurant on the corniche.

🛏Aqaba budget hotel or hostel

Aqaba north to Madaba
Madaba
Travel north to Madaba — the JETT bus runs from Aqaba to Amman (~10 JOD, 3.5 hours) and you can get off at Madaba, or take a shared service taxi for similar money. Madaba is the 'City of Mosaics': see the 6th-century Madaba Map of the Holy Land in St George's Church (~3 JOD), then walk to the Church of the Apostles and the Archaeological Park. In the afternoon take a local taxi or minibus the 10km to Mount Nebo (~8-10 JOD return), where Moses is said to have looked over the Promised Land — the views over the Dead Sea and Jordan Valley are outstanding, and entry is included with the Jordan Pass. Sleep in a small Madaba guesthouse.

Back to Amman — free day to explore
Amman
A local minibus or service taxi covers the 30km from Madaba to Amman in about 45 minutes (~2-3 JOD). Drop your bag at a Downtown hostel and spend the day on your own schedule: the Citadel and Roman Theatre (Jordan Pass covers the Citadel; the theatre is ~2 JOD), the Jordan Museum for the Dead Sea Scrolls and Ain Ghazal statues, and the street art around Jabal Amman. Have a coffee and knafeh on Rainbow Street. Optional: a Turkish bath (hammam) in Downtown for ~15-25 JOD — a good way to scrub off a week of desert dust.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Essential Jordan: Dead Sea & Desert Stars — Self-Launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £395 per person for 8 days in Jordan. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £890 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £395 — a saving of roughly £495 (56%) per person.
How long is the Jordan trip?+
This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Jordan.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Jordan, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
