A DIY take on the operator's one-day Kathmandu sightseeing tour: you hit the same three UNESCO World Heritage sites — Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Kathmandu Durbar Square and Boudhanath, plus the cremation ghats at Pashupatinath — using local buses, Safa tempos, taxis and shared ride apps instead of a private car and guide. The commercial tour costs US$55 (~£42) per person for a 09:00–16:00 day, and notably excludes accommodation, meals and monument entrance fees. Doing it yourself typically lands around £20–28 for the full day (transport, entry tickets, food), with room to add a licensed city guide for one or two sites if you want the storytelling the original reviews rave about. All figures are approximate backpacker rates.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Self-launched UNESCO loop: Swayambhunath, Durbar Square, Pashupatinath & Boudhanath

Kathmandu

Start early (07:30) to beat the heat and the crowds. From Thamel, grab a taxi or Pathao/InDrive ride up to Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple) — about 10–15 minutes and roughly NPR 300–400 (~£2) for the car. The 365-step climb is best done before 09:00. Entry is NPR 200 (~£1.20) for foreigners; keep your ticket as it's valid for the day. Walk back down and around to Kathmandu Durbar Square (25–30 min on foot, or a short taxi). Entry NPR 1,000 (~£6) for the square and its museums — consider hiring an official site-licensed guide for ~NPR 1,500–2,500 (~£9–15) split between two or three travellers, which is the closest self-bookable equivalent to the operator's guiding. Break for lunch in Thamel or Freak Street: dal bhat or momos and chai for £3–5. In the afternoon head east to Pashupatinath Temple on the Bagmati (taxi ~NPR 400–500 / £2.50 or local bus ~NPR 30, 25 min). The main temple is Hindu-only, but the riverside ghats, cremation platforms and courtyard views are open to visitors with a NPR 1,000 (~£6) ticket — go with respect, no photos of cremations. Finish at Boudhanath Stupa (a 20-minute walk or NPR 150–200 taxi): entry NPR 400 (~£2.40), then do a kora (clockwise circuit with the pilgrims), drink masala tea on a rooftop cafe (NPR 150–250) and watch the afternoon light. Return to Thamel by Pathao (~£2.50) or the local bus. Note that unlike the commercial tour, an English-speaking guide is entirely optional here — you can join a free walking-tour group in Thamel from ~£0–10 tip-based if you'd rather have company.

🚌Taxis / Pathao or InDrive app rides for each hop (NPR 150–500 per ride, ~£1–3); local Safa tempo or bus on the Chabahil route for Boudhanath (NPR 20–30); most of the morning is walkable.

🛏Not included in the original tour — budget hostels in Thamel or Paknajol run £8–15 per night for a dorm, £18–28 for a private room.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kathmandu UNESCO Day Tour — Self-Launched Version cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £25 per person for 1 days in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Destination Unlimited Treks and Expeditions Pvt Ltd?+

Yes — Destination Unlimited Treks and Expeditions Pvt Ltd charges around £42 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £25 — a saving of roughly £17 (40%) per person.

How long is the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal trip?+

This itinerary runs 1 days, covering 1 day-by-day stops through Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, city-breaks, budget trip through Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
