Kenya Self-Launched: Masai Mara, Tsavo & the Coast
9 days · Kenya
G Adventures charges £2,480
No-markup version: ~£1,180 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of G Adventures' 9-day Nairobi-to-Mombasa safari-and-coast run. You'll book your own Maasai Mara safari lodge (or join a shared group safari with a Nairobi-based operator), ride the real SGR Madaraka Express and the old metre-gauge "Iron Snake" line toward Tsavo, do self-booked game drives out of Voi, visit the Gedi ruins by tuk-tuk, take a cooking class in Watamu, snorkel the marine park and finish in Mombasa. Everything here is bookable directly or through GetYourGuide/Klook — expect to pay roughly a third to a half of the group-tour price. All costs are approximate and exclude international flights.
Day-by-day
Arrive Nairobi — coffee, museum, acclimatise
Nairobi
Land at JKIA and take the airport shuttle or a Bolt/Uber into Westlands or Kilimani (roughly £7-10). Book a private room in a hostel or budget guesthouse — Nairobi has good mid-range hostels around Westlands and Karen. Spend the afternoon easing in: the Nairobi National Museum (entrance around £10 for non-residents) covers the Leakey hominid finds, and there's excellent Kenyan coffee at any of the Westlands cafés. Eat dinner at a local nyama choma or Indian-Kenyan spot rather than a tourist restaurant. Sort your eTA before you fly (Kenya requires one for all nationalities, ~£30) and buy a Safaricom SIM at the airport (£2-3) so you can use M-Pesa for everything.
🚌Airport shuttle or Bolt from JKIA (~£8); walking and matatus in town
🛏Private room in a Nairobi hostel/guesthouse, Westlands or Kilimani (~£22)
- →Nairobi National Museum
- →Westlands coffee crawl
- →Safaricom SIM + M-Pesa setup
Nairobi to the Maasai Mara — village visit and afternoon game drive
Maasai Mara
The smart budget move is to join a shared 3-day Maasai Mara camping safari with a Nairobi-based operator (book direct or via GetYourGuide, ~£230-280 per person including park fees, transport and most meals) rather than paying for a private vehicle. You leave early through the Great Rift Valley viewpoint at Mai Mahiu, stopping for photos, and reach the Mara around lunchtime. Afternoon: a visit to a Maasai village (agree the fee upfront, ~£15-20, and go with your driver so the money reaches the community) then a golden-hour game drive in the conservancy for giraffe, zebra, antelope and — with luck — lion.
🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle from Nairobi, ~5-6 hrs including Rift Valley stop
🛏Safari tented camp, Maasai Mara (~included in shared safari package)
- →Great Rift Valley viewpoint
- →Maasai village visit
- →Afternoon game drive in the conservancy
Full day in the Mara — dawn drive and reserve
Maasai Mara
Up before sunrise for the best wildlife window. If you want the balloon flight, book it directly with one of the Mara balloon operators (roughly £360-420, versus the ~£400 the tour charges) — but it's genuinely optional and skippable. Otherwise do a long morning drive into the Maasai Mara National Reserve with a picnic lunch, then an afternoon drive on a different loop. Late July to October is migration season; outside that you'll still see dense resident wildlife. Tip your driver-guide at the end (~£5/day is standard).
🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle
🛏Safari tented camp, Maasai Mara (~included)
- →Sunrise game drive
- →Maasai Mara National Reserve full-day drive with picnic lunch
- →Optional hot air balloon safari (~£380 direct)
Mara to Nairobi — community lunch and city evening
Nairobi
Morning exit drive with wildlife spotting on the way out of the reserve, then back to Nairobi by mid-afternoon — most shared safari packages include the return transfer, otherwise a shuttle is ~£20. Have a late lunch at Amani Ya Juu in Nairobi (a women's weaving cooperative and café — the community project the group tour includes, and you can walk in and support it directly for ~£8). Evening: optional group-style dinner at a local restaurant in Kilimani, or catch live music at a Westlands bar.
🚌Shared safari vehicle back to Nairobi; Bolt around town (~£5)
🛏Private room in a Nairobi hostel/guesthouse (~£22)
- →Amani Ya Juu café and craft shop
- →Kilimani food street dinner
The Iron Snake to Voi — Tsavo East afternoon drive
Tsavo East National Park / Voi
Take the old metre-gauge Nairobi–Mombasa line (the colonial 'Iron Snake', now run by Kenya Railways) from Nairobi to Voi — roughly 5-6 hours, second class around £6-9, book at the station or via the Kenya Railways portal a day or two ahead. Alternatively the modern SGR Madaraka Express runs to Voi in ~4.5 hrs for ~£9-12 express class if you prefer speed; sit on the left for Tsavo views. From Voi, arrange an afternoon game drive into Tsavo East through your lodge or a Voi-based operator (~£55-70 per person shared, park fee ~£40 for non-residents included in that). Tsavo East's red-dust elephants are the highlight.
🚌Kenya Railways metre-gauge train Nairobi–Voi (~£7); shared safari 4x4 for the park
🛏Budget lodge or bandas in Voi / Tsavo East gate area (~£28)
- →Iron Snake train journey
- →Tsavo East National Park afternoon game drive
Tsavo morning safari, afternoon by the pool
Tsavo East National Park / Voi
Early morning game drive into Tsavo East when the light and animal activity are best — Tsavo is vast and less crowded than the Mara. Back at the lodge for lunch and a free afternoon: swim, read, or take an optional late-afternoon drive (~£45). Book tomorrow's drive-and-transfer to the coast with the same operator to keep the price down. Cash note: ATMs in Voi can be unreliable — carry enough shillings for two days.
🚌Shared safari 4x4
🛏Budget lodge or bandas in Voi (~£28)
- →Morning game drive in Tsavo East
- →Optional late-afternoon game drive
Tsavo to Watamu via the Gedi ruins, plus a coastal cooking class
Watamu
Do one final game drive out of the park toward Voi, then take a matatu or shared shuttle up the coast to Watamu (~£6-8, 3-4 hrs via Malindi). Stop at the Gedi ruins near Watamu — a 13th-17th century Swahili town swallowed by forest; entrance is around £8 and it's easy to visit independently or with a local guide at the gate. Check into a beach guesthouse in Watamu, then book a Swahili cooking class directly with a local host or guesthouse (many charge £15-20 including dinner) for coconut fish curry, pilau and chapati.
🚌Shared shuttle/matatu Voi–Watamu via Malindi (~£7)
🛏Beach guesthouse or hostel private room, Watamu (~£24)
- →Gedi Ruins archaeological site
- →Swahili coastal cooking class and dinner
Watamu Marine Park — snorkel with turtles, sunset dhow
Watamu
Full free day. Book a Watamu Marine National Park snorkelling trip direct with a local boat operator or via Klook/GetYourGuide (~£25-35 including park fee and gear) — the reef is rich with turtles, parrotfish and reef sharks, and whale sharks pass through seasonally. Alternatively spend the morning at Mida Creek on a boardwalk-and-mangrove walk (~£10). In the late afternoon, take a sunset dhow cruise on Mida Creek (~£20-25 direct, versus the ~£75 the tour charges) with snacks and a sundowner. Eat grilled seafood on the beach in the evening.
🚌Tuk-tuks around Watamu (~£2-4 per trip)
🛏Beach guesthouse, Watamu (~£24)
- →Watamu Marine National Park snorkelling
- →Mida Creek mangrove boardwalk
- →Sunset dhow cruise
Watamu to Mombasa and out
Mombasa
Take a matatu or shared shuttle to Mombasa (~£4-6, about 2 hrs) and head straight to Moi International Airport. If your flight is later in the day, drop your bag and walk Fort Jesus and the old town (~£8) — a good last dose of Swahili-coast history. Don't book a departure before mid-afternoon: the transfer plus airport time eats 3-4 hours. Buy a few kikoi or wood carvings at the old town workshops for souvenirs.
🚌Matatu/shared shuttle Watamu–Mombasa (~£5); tuk-tuk or Bolt to Moi International (~£5)
🛏—
- →Fort Jesus and Mombasa old town

Frequently asked questions
How much does Kenya Self-Launched: Masai Mara, Tsavo & the Coast cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,180 per person for 9 days in Kenya. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,480 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,180 — a saving of roughly £1,300 (52%) per person.
How long is the Kenya trip?+
This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Kenya.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, wildlife, culture trip through Kenya, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
