Much Better Adventures charges £2,100

£870saved per person (41%)

No-markup version: ~£1,230 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of the classic Mount Kenya (Point Lenana, 4,985m) Chogoria Route trek combined with a Big Five safari in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Instead of a packaged group trip, you'll book a local trekking operator for the mountain (the only realistic way to do the Chogoria Route safely, with porters and certified guides), then arrange your own safari and riverside stays. This is a serious high-altitude trek with a night-time summit push — budget 8 nights, with 4 nights camping on the mountain, 1-2 nights safari and lodge/cottage rest nights. Costs are approximate per person in GBP, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Nairobi & transfer to Sagana River

Nairobi / Sagana River

Land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). Rather than a group transfer, take a pre-booked airport pickup or a local taxi/Uber to your first-night base near the Sagana River (approx 2 hrs, £30-45 for a private car, or split a shared shuttle). Settle into a riverside guesthouse or budget lodge, have dinner and rest ahead of the trek. Many travellers arrive a night early to adjust — consider this if you're flying long-haul.

🚌Private transfer or Uber from NBO (~£30-45, 2 hrs)

🛏Riverside guesthouse or budget lodge near Sagana (twin/dorm, £25-45 pp)

  • Airport pickup
  • Riverside evening at Sagana base
  • Welcome dinner
~£70
Day 2

Drive to Mount Kenya, acclimatisation hike to Chogoria Gate

Mount Kenya — Chogoria Gate (2,950m)

Early breakfast, then a ~4-hour drive through the plains towards the Mount Kenya massif (shared safari van or your trek operator's transfer). Reach the Mount Kenya forest and set off on a short acclimatisation hike up to Chogoria Gate camp (9,678 ft). Your trekking operator will provide porters, cook and camping gear — this is the standard setup for the Chogoria Route. Dinner at camp and early night under the rainforest canopy.

🚌Shared road transfer Nairobi/Sagana to Chogoria Gate (~4.5 hrs)

🛏Campsite (twin tent, provided by trek operator)

  • Acclimatisation hike to Chogoria Gate
  • Campfire dinner at altitude
~£130
Day 3

Chogoria Gate to Lake Ellis (3,200m)

Lake Ellis, Mount Kenya

First full trekking day: 5 hrs, 4 miles, ~1,800 ft ascent through moorland and tussock grass, passing Urumandi Falls. Lake Ellis camp sits away from the main trail with panoramic views of the main peaks — a quiet, starry camp spot. Pace yourself: 'pole pole' (slowly, slowly) is the rule at altitude.

🚌On foot with porter support

🛏Campsite (twin tent)

  • Trek Chogoria Route to Lake Ellis
  • Urumandi Falls
  • Camp under the stars
~£120
Day 4

Lake Ellis to Lake Michaelson (3,960m)

Lake Michaelson, Mount Kenya

A wild, off-the-beaten-path day: 6-7 hrs, 6 miles, ascending ~2,950 ft and descending ~1,280 ft. Skirt Lake Ellis, cross the valley and follow a ridge deeper into the mountain, with views over the Gorges Valley. Camp beside the crystal-clear glacial Lake Michaelson, framed by 'The Temple' — 650 ft cliff walls. One of the most spectacular camps in East Africa.

🚌On foot with porter support

🛏Campsite (twin tent) at Lake Michaelson

  • Ridge trek into Gorges Valley
  • Lake Michaelson camp
  • The Temple viewpoint
~£120
Day 5

Lake Michaelson to Mintos Camp (4,200m)

Mintos Camp, Mount Kenya

A deliberately gentle day for acclimatisation: 2 hrs, 2 miles, ~1,420 ft up. Continue along the Chogoria Route to Mintos Camp on a ridge with huge views. Rest, hydrate and eat well — tomorrow's summit push starts at 2:15 AM. Early dinner and an early night.

🚌On foot with porter support

🛏Campsite (twin tent) at Mintos

  • Short acclimatisation trek
  • Mintos ridge views
  • Rest and prep for summit
~£110
Day 6

Summit Point Lenana (4,985m) & transfer to Ol Pejeta

Point Lenana / Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Wake at 2:15 AM, coffee, then headlamp trek up via Simba Col to summit Point Lenana (16,354 ft) at sunrise — on a clear day you can see Kilimanjaro 200 miles away. Descend via Shipton's Camp (breakfast), then down to Judmier Camp where you say goodbye to porters and guides. Load up the 4x4 and transfer to Ol Pejeta Conservancy for a comfortable lodge night and hot shower.

🚌Trek descent + 4x4 transfer to Ol Pejeta (~2-3 hrs)

Day 7

Full-day game drive & wilderness bush camp

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Full-day 4x4 game drive in Ol Pejeta with a local wildlife guide (bookable via the conservancy or a local safari operator). Look for the Big Five — high chances of elephants, lions and endangered black rhino, plus chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters sanctuary. Spend the night at a wilderness bush camp inside the reserve, listening to the sounds of Africa.

🛏Wilderness bush camp (tented, inside Ol Pejeta)

  • Full-day Big Five game drive

Day 8

Morning game drive & return to Sagana River

Ol Pejeta / Sagana River

Coffee at camp, then a final 4-hour morning game drive before heading back to the banks of the Sagana River. This is your free afternoon — no organised activity, so relax by the river, or book river activities (zip lining, bungee, climbing, mountain biking) directly with the camp if you still have energy.

🚌4x4 transfer back to Sagana (~2-3 hrs)

🛏Riverside cottage or lodge near Sagana (twin share, £30-50 pp)

  • Morning game drive
  • Relaxed riverside afternoon
  • Optional adventure activities (booked locally)
~£190
Day 9

Farewell Kenya — transfer to Nairobi

Sagana River / Nairobi

Breakfast, then transfer back to Nairobi. Note the departure squeeze: an early airport transfer means leaving Sagana around 4:00 AM, so if your flight allows, book a late-afternoon or evening transfer instead. Either way, a pre-booked private or shared transfer (~2-2.5 hrs) gets you to NBO in time for your onward flight.

🚌Private or shared transfer Sagana to NBO (~£30-45)

🛏N/A (onward flight)

  • Breakfast
  • Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
~£50

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Mount Kenya Chogoria Route Trek & Ol Pejeta Safari cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,230 per person for 9 days in Kenya. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £2,100 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,230 — a saving of roughly £870 (41%) per person.

How long is the Kenya trip?+

This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Kenya.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, wildlife trip through Kenya, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
