No-markup version: ~£1,195 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' 11-day Nairobi-to-Arusha safari circuit, covering the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Instead of a private group vehicle and CEO, you'll join shared 4x4 safari departures, use Kenya's matatu/shuttle network and the Nairobi–Arusha cross-border shuttle, and stay in budget lodges, bandas and public campsites. Costs assume you join shared camping safari groups in the Mara and Amboseli and a small-group camping safari through Tanzania — these are the backpacker-standard equivalents of the original's hotel-and-tented-camp circuit. All figures are approximate and exclude international flights, visas, travel insurance and tips.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Nairobi — settle into Westlands or Kilimani

Nairobi, Kenya

Fly into Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA). Take an official airport taxi or Bolt/Uber into the city (~£10-14) rather than a touted 'private transfer'. Check into a hostel or budget guesthouse in Westlands or Kilimani. In the afternoon, do the free Nairobi city walk or visit the Nairobi National Museum (KES 1,200-1,500, ~£7-9) and the Karen Blixen Museum if time allows (~£15). Stock up on a SIM card (Safaricom tourist SIM, ~£2-4) and exchange cash — bring clean USD bills (post-2006, ideally $50/$100) as these get the best rates. Book your Masai Mara shared safari tonight for a pickup tomorrow; most Nairobi operators run 3-day/2-night group camping safaris from ~$320-450 pp.

🚌Airport taxi/Bolt ~£10-14; walking and matatus in the city

🛏Hostel or budget guesthouse, Westlands/Kilimani — dorm ~£10-14, private room ~£25-35

  • →Nairobi National Museum (~£7-9)
  • →Nairobi city walk

  • →Book Masai Mara shared safari

Day 2

Great Rift Valley to the Masai Mara

Masai Mara, Kenya

Join a shared 4x4 safari group pickup from your Nairobi accommodation around 7-8am. Drive northwest through the Great Rift Valley with a photo stop at the escarpment viewpoint, reaching the Mara in time for lunch. Most budget group safaris include lunch, dinner and a banda/tented camp bed. Afternoon game drive in the reserve or a conservancy concession looking for lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra and — June to October — the migrating wildebeest herds. Evening: an optional authentically-run Maasai village visit, usually organised by your camp (~£15-25, and worth asking how proceeds are shared).

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle, ~5-6 hours from Nairobi including stops (included in package)

🛏Masai Mara budget tented camp or banda (usually included in shared safari package)

  • →Great Rift Valley escarpment stop
  • →Afternoon game drive

Day 3

Full day in the Masai Mara

Masai Mara, Kenya

Early morning game drive when animals are most active, back to camp for breakfast, then a picnic-lunch full afternoon drive in the Mara Triangle or the main reserve. Optional hot-air balloon safari at sunrise can be booked directly with Governors' Balloon Safaris or Mara Balloon Safaris (~$450-500, roughly £350-395) — considerably more than the operator's $499 add-on, so weigh it up. Cheaper alternative: ask your camp about a guided nature walk with a Maasai spotter (~£20-30). Dinner and overnight at camp.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle (included)

🛏Masai Mara budget tented camp or banda (included)

  • →Sunrise game drive
  • →Full afternoon game drive with picnic lunch

Day 4

Mara back to Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya

Morning exit game drive as you leave the Mara, then the drive back to Nairobi, arriving late afternoon. Instead of the operator's supported community lunch, stop at the Amani Ya Juu café in Nairobi (a fair-trade women's cooperative — lunch ~£6-9) or the Kazuri Beads workshop in Karen for hand-made ceramics and beads. Evening: budget dinner at a local nyama choma spot or the Carnivore-less alternative — try Mama Oliech or a Kilimani eatery (~£8-12). Reconfirm tomorrow's Nairobi-to-Arusha shuttle booking.

🚌Shared 4x4 back to Nairobi (included in package); evening Bolt/Uber ~£3-5

🛏Hostel or budget guesthouse, Nairobi (~£10-30)

  • →Morning exit game drive

Day 5

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

Amboseli, Kenya

Take a morning shuttle or matatu from Nairobi to Emali (~2.5 hrs, ~£3-5), then a shared taxi/bola-bola to Kimana near Amboseli gate (~£3-5), or book a seat on a shared Amboseli safari shuttle via your hostel (~£12-18). Afternoon game drive in Amboseli with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop — one of the best places in Africa to photograph elephants against the mountain. Budget camps just outside the gate (Kimana or Amboseli town) run evening drives; a shared afternoon drive with park fees comes to roughly £45-60 including the $60 pp park entry and vehicle share.

🚌Shuttle/matatu Nairobi–Emali (~£3-5) plus shared taxi to Kimana (~£3-5); shared 4x4 game drive

🛏Budget camp or guesthouse outside Amboseli gate (~£15-25)

  • →Afternoon game drive in Amboseli
  • →Kilimanjaro viewpoints
~£100
Day 6

Amboseli morning drive, then cross into Tanzania

Namanga / Arusha, Tanzania

Early morning game drive in the park (best light on Kilimanjaro), then head back to Namanga. There's no clean public route direct from Amboseli to Arusha — the workable self-launch is: shared taxi from Kimana to Namanga border (~£4-6), walk across the border post on foot, then pick up the Namanga–Arusha shuttle/dalla-dalla on the Tanzania side (~£3-5, 2.5 hrs). Budget the border formalities time. In Arusha, check into a hostel or guesthouse near the clock tower, and spend the evening booking a shared camping safari covering Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti (operators like Tanzania Specialist, Safari Avventura or local Arusha companies offer 4-5 day group camping safaris from ~$900-1,200 pp; ask your hostel to compare three quotes).

🚌Shared taxi to Namanga (~£4-6); cross-border shuttle to Arusha (~£3-5)

🛏Arusha hostel/guesthouse (~£12-22)

  • →Morning game drive in Amboseli
  • →Book Tanzania camping safari
~£110
Day 7

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire / Karatu, Tanzania

Depart Arusha at 7am in your shared safari 4x4 for Tarangire National Park (~2.5 hrs). Afternoon game drive among the ancient baobabs and huge elephant herds that gather along the Tarangire River. Picnic lunch inside the park (included). Continue to Karatu or Mto wa Mbu for the night at a budget campsite or guesthouse. Typical 4-day group camping safari package covers transport, park fees, meals and camping for roughly $180-220 pp per day — book in Arusha and pay locally.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle (included)

🛏Karatu or Mto wa Mbu budget campsite/guesthouse (included in safari package)

  • →Tarangire game drive
  • →Baobab and elephant spotting
~£175
Day 8

Karatu coffee tour and a slow morning

Karatu, Tanzania

Free morning to wander Karatu's market and hills. In the afternoon, take a community coffee tour — either directly with a local cooperative such as the Iraqw-run farms around Karatu, or via a hostel booking (~£15-25), covering harvesting, pulping, sorting and roasting. Cheaper and far more intimate than the operator's included version. Optional: add a Lake Manyara afternoon game drive if you want the extra park (~$100-130, ~£80-100, bookable in Karatu). Dinner at your guesthouse or a local kibanda (~£6-8).

🚌Walking; boda-boda or shared taxi to the coffee farm (~£2-4)

🛏Karatu budget campsite/guesthouse (~£15-25)

  • →Karatu market
  • →Coffee harvesting and roasting tour (~£15-25)
  • →Optional Lake Manyara game drive (~£80-100)
~£55
Day 9

Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti

Ngorongoro / Serengeti, Tanzania

Leave Karatu at dawn. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full morning game drive — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and reliably good for black rhino, lion and huge buffalo herds. Picnic lunch at the Ngoitokitok springs (watch your sandwiches around the kites). Climb out and drive to the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate with an en-route game drive, arriving at a public campsite or budget tented camp in the Seronera area for sunset and dinner under the stars.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle (included)

🛏Serengeti public campsite or budget tented camp (included in safari package)

  • →Ngorongoro Crater game drive
  • →Naabi Hill Gate entry
  • →Serengeti sunset
~£190
Day 10

Full-day Serengeti safari

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Full day in the Serengeti with picnic lunch packed by your camp — Seronera valley is excellent for leopard in the riverine trees, plus cheetah, elephant and, in season, river crossings. Optional sunrise balloon flight with Miracle Experience or Serengeti Balloon Safaris (~$550-600, ~£430-470 — genuinely expensive, book direct and far ahead). Back to camp for dinner and a nightcap around the fire, listening for hyenas.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle (included)

🛏Serengeti public campsite or budget tented camp (included)

  • →Full-day game drive
  • →Optional balloon safari (~£430-470)
~£175
Day 11

Serengeti back to Arusha

Arusha, Tanzania

Breakfast at camp, then the long drive back to Arusha with a lunch stop at Mto wa Mbu village — do the community market walk and try local banana beer or rice and beans at a village eatery (~£5-8). You can also join a Mto wa Mbu bike tour (~£15-20) if time allows. Arrive Arusha late afternoon; onward flights from Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Arusha (ARK) should not be booked before 21:00. If you're staying on, Arusha hostels are ~£12-22 a night.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle back to Arusha (included); airport transfer ~£15-25

🛏Optional final night in Arusha hostel if not flying out (~£12-22)

  • →Mto wa Mbu community market visit and lunch (~£5-8)
  • →Optional Mto wa Mbu bike tour (~£15-20)
~£60

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kenya & Tanzania: Self-Launched Serengeti Safari Adventure cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,195 per person for 11 days in Kenya & Tanzania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £3,900 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,195 — a saving of roughly £2,705 (69%) per person.

How long is the Kenya & Tanzania trip?+

This itinerary runs 11 days, covering 11 day-by-day stops through Kenya & Tanzania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, culture trip through Kenya & Tanzania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
