Kenya & Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar: The Self-Launched Version

18 days · Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar

G Adventures charges £9,000

£7,615saved per person (85%)

No-markup version: ~£1,385 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched take on G Adventures' 18-day Geluxe Kenya & Tanzania safari: Nairobi, a night at a community-run Maasai lodge near Il Ngwesi, the Maasai Mara, Amboseli with Kilimanjaro views, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, then a flight to Zanzibar for Stone Town and Nakupenda Beach. Instead of a private 4x4 and premium lodges, you join scheduled budget camping safaris and public/shuttle transport, staying in hostels, guesthouses and tented camps. All figures are rough backpacker estimates in GBP per person and exclude international flights and the Arusha–Zanzibar flight unless stated.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Nairobi: Arrival & Karen / City Day

Nairobi, Kenya

Land at JKIA, take an Uber or Bolt into the city (roughly £10–14) and check into a hostel in Westlands or Kilimani. Shake off the flight with a wander through the Nairobi National Museum or the Giraffe Centre in Karen, then eat nyama choma and ugali at a local grill. Buy a Safaricom SIM (£2–4) for M-Pesa — almost everything in Kenya runs on it.

🛏Hostel dorm or private room, Westlands/Kilimani (£12–22)

  • →Giraffe Centre (Karen) entry
  • →Nairobi National Museum
  • →M-Pesa SIM setup
  • →Nyama choma dinner

Day 2

Nairobi → Laikipia: Maasai Community Conservancy

Il Ngwesi / Laikipia, Kenya

The original flies to a Maasai-owned eco-lodge; independently, take a matatu or shared shuttle north via Nanyuki (roughly £8–12, 4–5 hrs). From Nanyuki arrange a conservancy transfer or join a guided conservancy walk. Community-run camps and bandas in the Il Ngwesi/Lewa area run about £30–45 per person per night with meals — still the most authentic Maasai stay on this route, and profits go to the community.

Laikipia: Wildlife Tracking on Foot

Il Ngwesi / Laikipia, Kenya

Spend the morning on a guided walking safari with Maasai trackers — rhino, elephant and Grevy's zebra are possible in the northern conservancies. Afternoon village visit and a sundowner on the escarpment. Conservancy guiding fees are typically £25–40 for a half day; negotiate a package with your camp.

Join a scheduled group camping safari based at Talek or Sekenani: three days of game drives plus tented camp and meals typically costs £200–320 per person in low/mid season. Head out for a late-afternoon drive the moment you arrive.

Maasai Mara: Community & Wildlife

Maasai Mara, Kenya

Morning game drive, then a visit to a Maasai village near Talek (£10–15 entry, often including a guided walk) or a visit to a local conservancy. Day 7

Mara → Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya

Final early drive, then shuttle back to Nairobi (4–6 hrs). Amboseli: Kilimanjaro & Elephants

Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Take a morning bus/shuttle from Nairobi to Emali or Namanga, then a matatu to Kimana/Amboseli gate (roughly £6–10, 4 hrs). Stay in a budget camp just outside the gate and join an afternoon game drive in Amboseli — the classic elephant herds against Kilimanjaro. Park entry for non-residents is around £45–60 per day; a shared afternoon drive plus entry runs £60–80.

Cross on foot, pick up a shuttle or dala-dala on the Tanzanian side to Arusha (roughly £6–10 total from Amboseli). Kenyan eTA ~£25, Tanzania e-visa ~£40 (US$50). Settle into an Arusha hostel and book your Ngorongoro/Serengeti camping safari for the next days (3-day group camping safari roughly £350–500 pp).

Join your group camping safari. Drive up through Karatu and Mto wa Mbu (a good stop for a village walk or banana-plantation bike ride, ~£12–18 direct), then onto the crater rim viewpoint. Descend early for a full crater-floor drive — black rhino, lion, flamingo at Lake Magadi — with a picnic lunch by the hippo pool. Camp on the crater rim or in Karatu.

Drive from Ngorongoro into the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate (~3.5 hrs), game-viewing the whole way. Serengeti park fees for non-residents are roughly £55–70 per 24 hours plus vehicle fees, which is why a group camping safari is the cost-effective route. Set up at a public campsite in Seronera and take an afternoon drive.

Optional Serengeti balloon safari booked direct with operators like Serengeti Balloon Safaris runs around £420–480 (vs $599 with the tour). Return to camp for dinner under the stars.

Evening at Forodhani night market — a cheap feast of grilled seafood skewers and Zanzibar pizza for £4–7.

Alternatively the half-day Safari Blue boat (sandbank, snorkelling, seafood lunch) is roughly £50–65 booked direct.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kenya & Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar: The Self-Launched Version cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,385 per person for 18 days in Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £9,000 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,385 — a saving of roughly £7,615 (85%) per person.

How long is the Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar trip?+

This itinerary runs 18 days, covering 18 day-by-day stops through Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, beaches trip through Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
