Kenya to Rwanda: The Maasai Mara, Gorillas & Chimps — Self-Launched

14 days · Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda

G Adventures charges £4,520

£1,870saved per person (41%)

No-markup version: ~£2,650 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY, self-launched version of G Adventures' 14-day Kenya–Uganda–Rwanda wildlife epic. You'll still hit Lake Nakuru, the Maasai Mara, Kibale's chimps, Queen Elizabeth NP and Bwindi's gorillas, plus the Kigali Genocide Memorial — but you'll book your own public transport (matatus, buses, the Nairobi–Kampala bus or a cheap flight), stay in hostels, guest farms and budget safari camps, and arrange permits and day tours directly. Realistic total: roughly £2,500–2,800 per person including the gorilla permit, about half the operator's £4,500–5,600 asking price. Trekking fitness and a tolerance for long, bumpy bus days are essential.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya

Land at JKIA (allow time for your eTA and mandatory health insurance already sorted before flying). Take an airport taxi or the cheap Airport Bus to the city centre and check into a hostel or budget hotel around Kilimani or Westlands (£12–20 dorm/private). Spend the afternoon acclimatising: walk to the Nairobi National Museum or just sort a local SIM (Safaricom, ~£2) and M-Pesa mobile money. Eat at a local nyama choma or mama's kitchen for £5–7.

🚌Airport taxi ~£15–18 shared; Airport Bus ~£2

🛏Hostel/budget hotel, Nairobi (dorm or twin ~£15)

  • →Settle in and SIM/M-Pesa setup
  • →Optional Nairobi National Museum (~£8)
~£55
Day 2

Nairobi to Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru, Kenya

Take a matatu or shared shuttle from Nairobi's Country Bus/River Road to Nakuru town (3–3.5 hrs, ~£6–8), then a boda-boda or shared taxi to Nakuru town centre and a guesthouse (£15–25). Book a late-afternoon safari drive into Lake Nakuru NP directly with a local operator or the lodge (shared 4x4, ~£40–50 per person) — the park's flamingo-lined lake and rhino population make it one of Kenya's easiest Big Five wins. Dinner at a local eatery, £6.

🛏Guesthouse/hostel, Nakuru (~£20)

  • →Lake Nakuru NP afternoon safari drive (~£45)

Lake Nakuru, Kenya

Head in early on a second self-booked game drive (or a shared vehicle through the guesthouse; ~£45) while the light is best, then lunch back in town (£5). The afternoon is free — walk down to the lake viewpoint, visit the small Nakuru markets, or simply rest ahead of the longer journey tomorrow. Optional extra afternoon drive can be arranged for ~£40. Dinner included at your guesthouse or a local café, £6.

If you want the splurge, a hot-air balloon safari is bookable direct (~£380–420) but is a big extra on a budget trip. Return to the tented camp for the night, listening to the plains.

Have lunch at a community café or the Amani ya Juu craft centre in Nairobi — a women-led initiative supported by tourism, a good self-launched stand-in for the operator's community lunch. Check into your Nairobi hostel (£15) and join other travellers for an optional group dinner (£8).

🛏Hostel/budget hotel, Nairobi (~£15)

  • →Amani ya Juu community lunch (~£6)

Day 7

Nairobi to Kampala

Kampala, Uganda

Two options: a cheap direct flight (Nairobi–Entebbe, one-way from ~£90–130 booked in advance on Jambojet/Kenya Airways), or the overnight bus from Nairobi to Kampala (~£25–35, 13–14 hrs). Flying buys you an afternoon in Kampala; the bus saves ~£70 at the cost of a night's sleep. From Entebbe take a shared taxi or the airport bus to Kampala (£3–5). Drop into a hostel in the Kololo/Ntinda area (£10–15 dorm). Explore the city on foot — Kampala's markets and café scene are cheap and lively.

Check into a budget community camp or guesthouse at the park gate (£15–20) and use the afternoon to sort out gorilla-trek logistics with your lodge: gear, porter hire (~£15) and an early breakfast. Frequently asked questions

How much does Kenya to Rwanda: The Maasai Mara, Gorillas & Chimps — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £2,650 per person for 14 days in Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £4,520 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £2,650 — a saving of roughly £1,870 (41%) per person.

How long is the Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda trip?+

This itinerary runs 14 days, covering 14 day-by-day stops through Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, hiking trip through Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
