No-markup version: ~£2,795 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A 22-day self-launched version of G Adventures' "Ultimate East Africa" — Nairobi to Stone Town, via the Rift Valley, Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for mountain gorillas and chimps, Jinja on the White Nile, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, then the beaches and old town of Zanzibar. You'll book the two big-ticket permits (gorilla and chimp tracking) direct through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, use matatus, coaches and public shuttles instead of an overland truck, join small-group safari departures rather than a private 4x4, and stay in hostels, guesthouses and campsite bandas instead of participation camping. Everything is bookable independently — the only hard-to-improvise legs are the UWA permits, which should be secured months ahead.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya

Land at Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA). Take the airport shuttle bus or a metered taxi (approx £12-18) to a hostel in Westlands or Karen-adjacent Kilimani — not central CBD, which is quiet and slightly sketchy at night. Sort cash (ATMs at the airport), buy a Safaricom SIM/eSIM with data, and download the Bolt and Little apps for cheap rides. Join a free hostel walking group or just eat at a local nyama choma joint.

🚌Airport taxi or shuttle ~£14

🛏Hostel dorm or private room, Westlands/Kilimani (approx £12-16 dorm)

  • →Airport transfer and SIM card
  • →Settle in, hostel briefing on Nairobi safety
  • →Evening street food / nyama choma

Day 2

Nairobi to Eldoret via the Rift Valley

Eldoret, Kenya

Optional morning at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage (£20-25, book online; open 11am-12pm). Then take an afternoon Easy Coach or Modern Coast bus from Nairobi to Eldoret (~6-7 hrs, £10-12) — you'll roll through the Great Rift Valley escarpment with the classic views. Eldoret is a functional highland town; cheap guesthouses near the bus stage and a decent evening market scene.

Kampala, Uganda

Continue by bus or shared shuttle from Eldoret to the Malaba border (2-3 hrs, £4-6), walk the crossing on foot, then pick up a Ugandan matatu or coach to Kampala (4-5 hrs, £6-9). Have your yellow fever certificate ready — Uganda enforces it. Get a Ugandan e-visa in advance or USD 50 cash at the border. Kampala's hostels cluster around Kololo and Muyenga; the Baba/Bushpig-type dorms are sociable and cheap.

Enjoy the Ugandan countryside out of the window — tea estates, banana plantations, crater lakes. Pre-book your Kalinzu chimp permit (~£55) direct through the reserve office.

Afterwards stop at a roadside tea plantation for a tour and tasting (£5-8). Then continue south to Kabale and down to Lake Bunyonyi (2-3 hrs, £6-8), one of Africa's most beautiful crater lakes. Stay in a lakeside guesthouse or eco-camp with views over the terraced hills.

Bwindi / Buhoma, Uganda

The big one. Transfer to your assigned Bwindi trailhead (Buhoma, Ruhija or Nkuringo) by boda or shared 4x4 transfer (£10-15). Gorilla permits must be booked directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) months in advance — USD 700 foreign non-resident, around £550. Briefing at 7.30am, then 1-6 hours of steep, muddy hiking with trackers before your allocated hour with a habituated family. Pack old long trousers, gardening gloves, gaiters, rain jacket and water. Stay two nights in Buhoma so you have a buffer day.

Alternatively add a Rwanda day trip to Kigali's Genocide Memorial if you've bought the East Africa visa (£45-60). Wash your trekking kit and put your feet up.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Join a small-group scheduled safari with a budget operator (budget camping safaris of this length run £450-650 per person for the Serengeti/Ngorongoro loop, covering 4x4, guide, park fees, camping and food — book through an Arusha operator or GetYourGuide). Drive via the Naabi Hill gate into the Seronera area, game-driving en route for lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and, in season, the migration herds. Camp in a public campsite inside the park — basic squat toilets, no showers, wildlife wandering through at night. Magical.

Sunrise game drive, then a full day moving between the Seronera valley and the plains depending on where the herds and cats are. Optional hot-air balloon safari at dawn (approx £450-500 per person, book direct with Serengeti Balloon Safaris well ahead — the least budget-friendly splurge on the trip, and skippable). Ngorongoro Crater rim, Tanzania

Morning game drive out of the Serengeti via Naabi Hill and the Olduvai Gorge museum (£8 entry — worth the stop for the hominin story). Climb to the Ngorongoro Crater rim and camp at Simba campsite: cold at 2,300m, so bring a warm layer and a decent sleeping bag. Sunset over the caldera is genuinely one of Africa's great views.

Zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, buffalo, warthog, hippo, elephant and a good chance of black rhino; lions are frequently seen on the crater floor and leopards in the Lerai Forest. Picnic lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs (watch your sandwiches — the kites are professionals). Drive back to Arusha in the afternoon/evening.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Ultimate East Africa: Self-Launched Gorillas, Serengeti & Zanzibar cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £2,795 per person for 22 days in Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania (Zanzibar). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £3,450 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £2,795 — a saving of roughly £655 (19%) per person.

How long is the Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania (Zanzibar) trip?+

This itinerary runs 22 days, covering 22 day-by-day stops through Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania (Zanzibar).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania (Zanzibar), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
