Self-Launched Kerala: Beaches, Backwaters & Hill Stations (10 Days)
10 days · Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India
Travel Con charges £1,160
No-markup version: ~£450 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A DIY version of Travel Con's 10-day Kochi-Munnar-Madurai-Thekkady-Kumarakom-Alleppey loop, done independently with trains, buses and public ferries instead of a private car and driver. You still get Fort Kochi's colonial lanes, Munnar's tea hills and Eravikulam National Park, the temple city of Madurai, a Periyar Lake boat safari and a night on an Alleppey houseboat — but you book each piece yourself at backpacker rates. Roughly £430-480 per person against the operator's ~£1,160 (US$1,500) sale price, excluding flights. Note that the operator's "all inclusive" covers hotels, a driver-guide and some meals but not most entry fees, so diary in monument and park tickets yourself.
Day-by-day
Arrive Kochi — Fort Kochi orientation
Kochi (Cochin)
Land at Cochin International Airport and take the airport bus or a prepaid taxi to Fort Kochi (KSRTC bus ~£1.50, taxi ~£10-12). Check into a Fort Kochi guesthouse or hostel and spend the late afternoon walking the Chinese fishing nets, the Dutch Cemetery and the waterfront. Grab dinner at a local eatery near Princess Street — Keralan fish curry and appam should cost under £4. This replaces the operator's airport pickup with the airport's own public transport and pre-paid taxi counter.

Check into a Munnar homestay or budget guesthouse, then walk the tea estates around town in the afternoon. The operator drives this in a private car; the public bus is the same road for a tenth of the cost.

Arrive, check in near the temple, then visit Meenakshi Amman Temple (free, but cameras cost extra) in the late afternoon and the evening puja. Add Tirumalai Nayak Palace (~£0.50) and the Gandhi Museum (free) if time allows. The temple is a 5-minute walk from most budget hotels.

Bus back over the hills to Thekkady/Kumily (~4-5 hrs, ~£3), the gateway to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Book the KTDC public boat safari on Periyar Lake (roughly £2-4 per person, book at the sanctuary counter or online ahead — morning slots sell out) for an afternoon or next-morning slot. The operator's 'boat ride at Periyar Lake' is the same public KTDC boat. Stay in Kumily, the village at the sanctuary gate, where guesthouses are cheap.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary & spice plantations
Thekkady (Kumily)
Do an early guided nature walk inside Periyar (book through the sanctuary, ~£6-8) — these small-group walks are the independent substitute for the operator's guided sanctuary visit. Spend the afternoon on a spice plantation tour in Kumily (~£2-3, walkable from town or shared auto) covering cardamom, pepper, vanilla and cinnamon. Consider a short bamboo rafting or border-hiking slot if you have energy; all are bookable at the sanctuary office.
🚌On foot and shared auto, ~£2
🛏Kumily guesthouse, ~£10-14/night
- →Guided nature walk in Periyar sanctuary (~£7)
- →Spice plantation tour (~£2-3)

Thekkady to Kumarakom — Vembanad Lake
Kumarakom
Bus down to Kottayam (~4 hrs, ~£2) then a local bus or auto to Kumarakom (~£0.50-1). Check into a homestay by the backwaters and walk the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (~£1). In the afternoon, take a public ferry or a shared country boat across Vembanad Lake (~£1-3) and watch the sun set over the paddy fields. This is the 'backwater views' day of the operator's itinerary, without the private car.

🛏Kumarakom homestay, ~£14-18/night

Book a shared or budget private houseboat directly with an Alleppey operator or on Klook/GetYourGuide (shared boats from ~£25-40 pp; a private one-bedroom boat for two from ~£80-100 total including meals). Board around midday and drift through the backwater canals, paddy fields and villages with lunch, dinner and breakfast on board. Book at least a few days ahead in peak season (Nov-Feb).
🚌Bus/ferry Kumarakom-Alleppey, ~£1
🛏Alleppey houseboat, shared or private, incl. meals (~£40 pp budget)
- →Overnight houseboat cruise on the Alleppey backwaters
- →Canal village and paddy field views

Kochi (Cochin)
Breakfast on the boat, disembark mid-morning, then take the train from Alleppey to Ernakulam Junction (~1.5 hrs, unreserved/2nd class ~£0.50-1) or a bus (~£1). From Ernakulam, catch the airport bus or a taxi to Cochin International for your flight. If your flight is late, you can squeeze in the beach strip at Cherai or Marari instead of heading straight back.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Kerala: Beaches, Backwaters & Hill Stations (10 Days) cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £450 per person for 10 days in Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Travel Con?+
Yes — Travel Con charges around £1,160 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £450 — a saving of roughly £710 (61%) per person.
How long is the Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India trip?+
This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a culture, beaches, foodie trip through Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
