A 15-day self-launched version of Exodus's Spice Trails of Kerala: tea-country trekking around Munnar and the Meesapulimala ridge, the temple city of Madurai, wildlife in Periyar, a night on a Kerala backwaters houseboat and beach time at Marari — all booked independently using homestays, local guides, KSRTC buses and the odd shared jeep. You'll need to be comfortable organising local trekking guides yourself in Munnar/Vattavada, but the terrain, trails and guesthouses are all accessible to independent travellers. Costs are approximate backpacker/mid-range estimates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Kochi — Fort Kochi orientation

Kochi

Land at Cochin International (COK) and take the airport bus or a prepaid taxi (~£4-6 / ₹400-600) to Fort Kochi, about 45 minutes. Check into a Fort Kochi guesthouse and spend the late afternoon walking the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church and the old harbour. Eat a Keralan dinner — fish curry, appam and banana chips — at a local eatery (₹200-350).

🚌Airport bus or prepaid taxi ~£5

🛏Fort Kochi guesthouse or budget hotel, twin/double (₹1,200-2,000)

~£30
Day 2

Kochi to Munnar hill station

Munnar

Morning KSRTC bus from Kochi's Ernakulam bus stand to Munnar (~5-6 hours, ₹250-350 / ~£3). The road climbs through rubber and cardamom country into the tea hills. Book a Munnar guesthouse on arrival and spend the afternoon acclimatising: walk the tea estates around town, visit a small tea factory, and arrange tomorrow's local trekking guide through your guesthouse or the Munnar tourist office.

🚌KSRTC bus Kochi–Munnar ~£3

🛏Munnar homestay/guesthouse (₹1,200-1,800)

Munnar

Hire a local 4x4 (or shared jeep, ~£15-20 for a half day, split between travellers) up to the old Munnar tracks, then trek roughly 6 km in the Seven Malai Hills with a local guide (₹800-1,500 for a guide) through tea, cardamom and coffee plantations. Optional afternoon at the Tea Museum (₹150 entry). Start early — midday heat is intense.

Day 4

To Silent Valley area — trek to camp

Silent Valley (Munnar region)

Arrange a jeep transfer (~1 hour) towards the Silent Valley/Silent Valley-side trailheads, then trek ~14 km through tea plantations, grasslands and eucalyptus forest to a basic camp. Independent camping here is tricky — the realistic self-launched option is a trekking package with a local Munnar/Vattavada operator (guide, cook, tents, ~£45-60 pp for 2-3 days) or a guided day trek with a guesthouse stay instead. Pack warm layers: nights on the ridge can drop close to freezing.

🚌Local jeep transfer ~£6 pp

🛏Trekking camp (tent, provided by local guide) or Vattavada guesthouse

  • →14 km trek through tea and eucalyptus
  • →Camp overnight in the Western Ghats

Day 5

Meesapulimala Peak summit

Meesapulimala

Early start (pre-6am) — the classic Meesapulimala ascent, about 15 km round trip through shola grassland and seven hills, reaching the second-highest peak in Kerala (2,640 m). Book a local guide through your trek operator or the Vattavada/Munnar trekking associations (compulsory for the peak). Return to camp for dinner. Bring a headtorch, waterproofs and plenty of water.

Yellapetty / Oorkadu

Trek ~16 km through Silent Valley forest, pine woods and the Rhodo Valley streams, finishing with a 4x4 transfer from Yellapetty village and a short walk to the Oorkadu campsite. This is the longest day — start at dawn, use a packed lunch, and keep an eye on the weather (leeches in wet months; gaiters help).

🛏Oorkadu camp (tent)

  • →16 km Silent Valley forest trek
  • →Rhodo Valley streams
  • →Oorkadu camp
~£45

Vattavada

A gentler ~7 km hike down through vegetable terraces and tea plantations to Vattavada, one of Kerala's highest villages. Visit the tribal hamlets around Pazhathottam with a local guide, buy vegetables and honey direct from farmers, and stay in a village homestay — this is the easiest part of the trek to do fully independently.

  • →7 km hike to Vattavada
  • →Tribal village visit
  • →Vegetable farm and tea plantation walk

Koviloor walk and transfer to Theni

Koviloor / Theni

Morning 7 km walk from the village through eucalyptus plantations and forest paths to Koviloor, tea break in the village, then pick up a bus or shared jeep down to Theni (₹100-200). Theni is a good overnight stop for the Tamil Nadu leg — cheap lodges near the bus stand and excellent Chettinad food.

Drop bags at a guesthouse near the temple, then spend the afternoon at Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple — free entry, camera fee ~₹50 — including the Hall of a Thousand Pillars and the temple museum. Wander the bazaars around Chithirai Street and catch the evening puja. A local guide costs ₹500-800 if you want the history.

A private houseboat costs ₹7,000-12,000 for the boat (2 people sharing); budget alternatives include a shared shikara day cruise (₹400-700 pp) plus a homestay on the backwaters. Frequently asked questions

How much does Spice Trails of Kerala — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £497 per person for 15 days in Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Exodus Adventure Travels?+

Yes — Exodus Adventure Travels charges around £2,200 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £497 — a saving of roughly £1,703 (77%) per person.

How long is the Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India trip?+

This itinerary runs 15 days, covering 15 day-by-day stops through Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, hiking trip through Kerala & Tamil Nadu, India, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
