You'll save hundreds of pounds while still contributing meaningfully to animal welfare. Costs below are estimated per person for a 14-day stay and cover accommodation, food, local transport, and a direct donation to the project. All figures are approximate.
Day-by-day
Arrive Bangkok – Transfer to Hua Hin
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) → Hua Hin / Khao Tao
Fly into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). Rather than paying for a private programme transfer (~3.5 hrs), take the public bus from the airport to Ekkamai Bus Terminal (Airport Bus A4, ~£2.50, 1 hr), then catch a direct air-conditioned bus from Ekkamai to Hua Hin with Sombat Tour or Transport Co (~£5, 3.5 hrs). From Hua Hin bus station take a songthaew (shared red truck taxi) or motorbike taxi (~£2) south 12km to Khao Tao village. Check in to your guesthouse near Sai Noi Beach, rest, and grab dinner at a local Thai street stall. Tip: arrive a day early if possible to settle in before your volunteer placement begins.

Orientation & First Day at the Animal Welfare Project
Khao Tao / Hua Hin Animal Welfare Clinic
Walk the scenic 25-minute route from your guesthouse to the volunteer clinic via the lake — the same route programme volunteers use. Attend your welcome orientation with the project's full-time staff. Morning duties include kennel cleaning, feeding dogs and cats, and kennel/cattery upkeep. In the afternoon, join outreach visits to local street dog packs. How to arrange this independently: research and contact registered animal welfare NGOs in Hua Hin directly before you travel — organisations such as the Thai Animal Guardians Association (TAGA) and Hua Hin Dog Rescue accept independent volunteers. Some charge a small daily or weekly donation contribution (typically £30-60/week) that goes directly to the project, far less than a commercial programme fee.
