Krakow & Auschwitz Self-Launched City Break
4 days · Krakow, Poland
Euroadventures charges £330
No-markup version: ~£155 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of Euroadventures' 4-day Krakow package — same city, same Auschwitz-Birkenau day trip and the same Old Town and Kazimierz neighbourhoods, but booked independently. You'll stay in a well-located Old Town hostel or budget guesthouse, join the excellent free walking tours (tip-based) that the operator was charging for, and book the official Auschwitz-Birkenau guided study tour directly or via GetYourGuide. Everything in Krakow's compact Old Town is walkable, the airport is 17 minutes away by train, and food and drink are among the cheapest in Europe. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget rates in GBP and exclude flights.
Day-by-day
Arrive in Krakow & Old Town orientation
Krakow
Fly into Krakow John Paul II Airport (KRK) and take the direct airport train to Krakow Główny station (about 17 minutes, roughly £4 / 20 PLN) — or a Bolt/Uber to the Old Town for £6-9. Check into your hostel or budget guesthouse within the Planty ring, then spend the afternoon getting your bearings: walk through the Planty park, into Rynek Główny (Europe's largest medieval square), and up into the Cloth Hall and around St Mary's Basilica. In the evening do a self-guided wander of the narrow lanes between the square and Wawel, grab a zapiekanka or pierogi dinner for £6-8, and optionally join a pub crawl or a Polish vodka tasting. Krakow's Christmas market (late Nov-Dec) is one of Europe's best.
🚌Airport train ~£4; everything else on foot
🛏Old Town hostel dorm (£12-18/night) or private budget guesthouse double (£30-40/night)
- →Rynek Główny & Cloth Hall
- →St Mary's Basilica exterior and surrounds
- →Planty park walk

Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial day trip
Auschwitz-Birkenau, Oświęcim
The most important day of the trip. Book the official Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum guided study tour in advance through the museum website (visit.auschwitz.org) or via GetYourGuide — roughly £20-30 per person including transport, or £35-45 for a combined ticket+transfer package. Bring your passport/ID (required for entry). Options: a direct bus from Krakow MDA bus station (about 1h20, £3-4 each way) or a shared shuttle/minibus transfer (£10-15 return). The visit covers both Auschwitz I and Birkenau and takes around 3.5-4 hours with a live licensed guide, plus a film screening. Plan for a 7-8 hour day door-to-door. It is emotionally heavy — build in a quiet evening afterwards; a simple dinner near Kazimierz for £8-10.

Free walking tour: Old Town, Wawel & Kazimierz
Krakow Old Town & Kazimierz
Skip the paid walking tours (the operator's own reviews note these are the same free tip-based tours anyone can join) and do them yourself. Morning: join the free Old Town walking tour that leaves from near St Mary's Basilica / the Barbican daily — you tip the guide £5-8 at the end. It covers Rynek Główny, the university quarter and Jagiellonian University, and finishes near Wawel Castle. Buy a Wawel state rooms or cathedral ticket separately (£6-10) if you want to go inside. Afternoon: walk south to Kazimierz, the Jewish Quarter — join the free Kazimierz walking tour (another £5-8 tip) covering the synagogues (the Old Synagogue is Poland's oldest), the Jewish cemetery, the site of the former ghetto across the river in Podgórze, the Holocaust memorial and Schindler's Factory filming locations. Evening: eat in Kazimierz — the city's best food, from £8-12 for a full meal.

Pick up obwarzanki (the local ring bread) and oscypek cheese from a street stall for a few pounds. Train or Bolt back to the airport (about £4) for your flight home. If you're extending, a Warsaw add-on is easy — 2h20-3h on the EIP high-speed train for around £12-20.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Krakow & Auschwitz Self-Launched City Break cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £155 per person for 4 days in Krakow, Poland. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Euroadventures?+
Yes — Euroadventures charges around £330 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £155 — a saving of roughly £175 (53%) per person.
How long is the Krakow, Poland trip?+
This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Krakow, Poland.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a culture, city-breaks, budget trip through Krakow, Poland, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
