An 8-day self-launched teahouse trek through the Langtang Valley, starting and ending in Kathmandu. You'll take the local bus to Syabrubesi, walk upstream through rhododendron and bamboo forest to the destroyed-and-rebuilt village of Langtang, and day-hike up to Tserko Ri (4,984 m) for the classic Langtang panorama. Everything is bookable yourself: bus seats, teahouse beds and the TIMS/National Park permits. Note that this route is a genuine high-altitude trek — pace yourself, allow an acclimatisation day if you feel it, and consider a local guide (around £20-25/day) for navigation, teahouse translation and safety. Costs are approximate backpacker estimates in GBP and exclude international flights, insurance and trekking gear.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

Kathmandu → Syabrubesi

Pick up your Langtang National Park entry permit and TIMS card at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu (or arrange via a local trekking agency for ~£5 admin). Then walk to Machha Pokhari bus park and catch a local/ tourist bus to Syabrubesi — the ride is 6-7 hours on rough, sometimes vertigo-inducing mountain roads. Book a window seat and get there early. Overnight in a simple teahouse in Syabrubesi and sort your first day's supplies.

🚌Local bus from Machha Pokhari, Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, 6-7 hrs, ~£8-10

🛏Teahouse in Syabrubesi (twin room, shared bathroom) ~£8

  • →Buy Langtang National Park permit (~£23) and TIMS card (~£14)
  • →Local bus Kathmandu–Syabrubesi (~£8-10)
  • →Riverside teahouse evening in Syabrubesi
~£55
Day 2

Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel

Lama Hotel (2,480 m)

Trek day one proper: cross the suspension bridges over the Langtang Khola and climb steadily through bamboo, oak and rhododendron forest. Roughly 5-6 hours. Trail is clear and signposted but busy enough with other trekkers that you'll never be alone. Teahouses at Rimche and Lama Hotel.

🚌On foot, 5-6 hrs

🛏Teahouse in Lama Hotel (twin room) ~£6-8

  • →~14 km trek with suspension bridge crossings
  • →Forest hiking along the Langtang River
~£30
Day 3

Lama Hotel to Ghodatabela

Ghodatabela (3,030 m)

A shorter, gentler day through flat-ish jungle sections before the valley opens out. Walk above the river through old-growth forest; keep an eye out for langur monkeys and Himalayan birds. Arrive early afternoon — a good day to rest, drink water and acclimatise before gaining more height.

🚌On foot, 4-5 hrs

🛏Teahouse in Ghodatabela ~£6-8

  • →~9 km trek along the river
  • →Wildlife spotting in the forest
~£28
Day 4

Ghodatabela to Langtang village / Kyanjin Gompa

Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m)

The scenery-defining day: forest gives way to open alpine valley with the Langtang Lirung massif ahead. Pass the reconstructed Langtang village (destroyed in the 2015 earthquake, rebuilt with visible memorials — worth a pause) and continue up to Mundu and Kyanjin Gompa. Altitude now above 3,800 m, so walk slowly and watch for headaches.

🚌On foot, 5-6 hrs

🛏Teahouse in Kyanjin Gompa ~£8

  • →~13 km trek, tree line to alpine valley
  • →Visit Langtang village and its earthquake memorial
~£32
Day 5

Tserko Ri day hike

Kyanjin Gompa / Tserko Ri (4,984 m)

Pre-dawn start for the climb to Tserko Ri viewpoint — about 3-4 hours up, 2 hours down. It's a steep, switchbacked path and the altitude is real; turn around if you feel unwell. Sunrise over Langtang Lirung and the glacier is the highlight of the whole trek. Afternoon: the small yak cheese factory in Kyanjin Gompa, and maybe the monastery.

🚌On foot, 6 hrs round trip

🛏Teahouse in Kyanjin Gompa ~£8

  • →Sunrise hike to Tserko Ri (4,984 m), self-navigated on marked trail
  • →Visit Kyanjin Gompa yak cheese factory (~£2)
  • →Optional bakery and monastery visit
~£28
Day 6

Descend to Lama Hotel area

Thangshyap / Lama Hotel (2,480 m)

Give your body a break and drop altitude. Retrace the trail down past Ghodatabela to Thangshyap or Lama Hotel — descending is fast, so you can cover a long stretch in 5-6 hours and sleep far more comfortably.

🚌On foot, 5-6 hrs

🛏Teahouse in Thangshyap or Lama Hotel ~£6-8

  • →~17 km descent through the valley
  • →Teahouse evening with other trekkers
~£26
Day 7

Descend to Syabrubesi

Syabrubesi (1,503 m)

Final trekking day: continue down through the forest and bamboo, crossing the last suspension bridges back to Syabrubesi. Arrive by early afternoon, wash some clothes, and buy your bus ticket for the morning (they sell out in peak season). Hot shower and dal bhat earned.

🚌On foot, 5 hrs

🛏Teahouse in Syabrubesi ~£8

  • →~14 km descent along the Langtang River
  • →Book onward bus ticket for the next morning
~£24
Day 8

Syabrubesi to Kathmandu

Syabrubesi → Kathmandu

Morning bus or shared jeep back to Kathmandu — 6-7 hours depending on road conditions and monsoon landslides. Arrive in Kathmandu in the afternoon and check into a Thamel hostel for a hot shower and a proper meal.

🚌Local bus/shared jeep, 6-7 hrs, ~£8-12

🛏Thamel hostel or guesthouse ~£10-12 (not included in trek total if you move on)

  • →Local bus or shared jeep Syabrubesi–Kathmandu (~£8-12)
  • →Evening in Thamel
~£35

Frequently asked questions

How much does Langtang Valley Trek — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £262 per person for 8 days in Langtang National Park, Nepal. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Mount Adventure Holidays Pvt. Ltd.?+

Yes — Mount Adventure Holidays Pvt. Ltd. charges around £620 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £262 — a saving of roughly £358 (58%) per person.

How long is the Langtang National Park, Nepal trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Langtang National Park, Nepal.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, budget trip through Langtang National Park, Nepal, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
