Begin with an early morning guided orientation walk of the reserve with senior staff. Learn the layout of the 3,000-hectare sanctuary, the location of animal enclosures, and the workflows of the rehabilitation centre. In the afternoon, join your first game drive across the reserve to observe resident wildlife including lions, elephants, rhinos, and cheetahs in their natural or managed habitat. Join SanWild's anti-poaching unit on a counter-poaching patrol of the reserve's perimeter and vulnerable zones. This is a sobering but vital element of conservation work in South Africa — poaching remains one of the greatest threats to rhinos and elephants.

Assist the SanWild veterinary team with routine and emergency animal care as required. Turn your attention to the reserve's land and habitat conservation efforts. SanWild's Savannah forest is an active carbon sink and requires ongoing stewardship. This is physical, outdoor work — bring sun protection, good boots, and plenty of water.

Your penultimate day on the reserve.
