London to Tehran by Rail — Self-Launched Edition

London to Tehran by Rail — Self-Launched Edition

40 days · London to Tehran overland by rail (Europe, Turkey & Iran)

G Adventures charges £7,250

£4,460saved per person (62%)

No-markup version: ~£2,790 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A 40-day self-launched rail odyssey from London's St Pancras to Tehran, following the same route as the G Adventures group trip but booked entirely on your own: Eurostar to Paris, the TGV to Lausanne, the Glacier Express through the Alps, Bavaria and Austria, down through Transylvania and the Balkans, across Turkey's Anatolia and the far east, then into Iran for Persepolis, Isfahan and Tehran. You'll ride the same legendary trains, stay in hostels, pensions and budget guesthouses, and join locally-run tours where you want a guide. Costs are estimates for a solo traveller in GBP and assume shared dorms or budget twin rooms where sensible. IMPORTANT: Iran travel requires careful, current visa and advisory research — Iranian visa approval numbers (LOI), nationality-specific rules (British, US, Canadian passport holders must be accompanied by a guide at all times and cannot get visa on arrival) and safety advice change frequently. Check your own foreign ministry advice and the nearest Iranian embassy before committing to any bookings, and note that Iran payment systems (no international cards) mean you need to carry sufficient cash.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in London

London, UK

Arrive and settle into a hostel near King's Cross/St Pancras — the Eurostar terminal is your departure point tomorrow, so walkable proximity is worth the small premium. Use the day to sort a UK SIM/eSIM, pick up a Rail Europe or Interrail pass decision, and buy your Eurostar ticket in advance if you haven't (book 1-3 months ahead for the cheapest fares, from around £39 each way).

🚌Walking, London Underground (£2.80-£3.50 per journey, contactless)

🛏Hostel dorm near King's Cross (e.g. Clink78 or similar)

Book Eurostar early for the best price — standard class fares run £39-£120 depending on how far ahead you book.

Walk the Clock Tower (free exterior, €2 to climb), the covered Scholars' Stairway, and the Church on the Hill. Guesthouses inside the citadel are great value at £25-35 a double, so a private room here costs about the same as a Western dorm.

Hostels and budget hotels in Van run £15-25. The Trans-Asia section of the original tour begins here, and it's where the trip starts to feel genuinely off the beaten track.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a slow-travel, culture, adventure trip through London to Tehran overland by rail (Europe, Turkey & Iran), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
