No-markup version: ~£345 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched, solo-friendly version of G Adventures' 4-day Nairobi-to-Nairobi Maasai Mara safari. Instead of a fixed small-group departure, you book your own budget Nairobi hotel, join a public shared safari shuttle down the Rift Valley, stay in a budget tented camp just outside the reserve, and arrange your game drives either through your camp or as a self-booked shared 4x4 day trip. You'll still visit a Maasai village, do morning and afternoon game drives in the reserve and neighbouring conservancies, and finish with a community lunch stop in Nairobi. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP and assume shared accommodation.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Nairobi — coffee, museums and a plan

Nairobi

Land at Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA) and take a prepaid airport taxi or the cheap Airport Bus shuttle into the city centre or Westlands (~£12-18 taxi, ~£2 bus). Check into a budget hotel or hostel in the city centre/Kilimani area. Spend the afternoon gently: Nairobi National Museum (KES 1,200-1,500, ~£8) if you want the Leakey hominid collection, or wander the Nairobi Railway Museum. Grab a Kenyan coffee and a plate of nyama choma or a thali in the evening. Sort out tomorrow's safari: confirm your seat on a shared safari shuttle or matatu-style safari van to the Mara, and buy a Safaricom SIM/eSIM with data at the airport or a city shop. Note: cash is king in the Mara — draw Kenyan shillings in Nairobi before you leave.

🚌JKIA airport taxi (~£15) or public airport bus (~£2); walking + cheap Uber/Bolt in the city (~£3-5)

🛏Budget hotel/hostel in Nairobi city centre or Kilimani (dorm or twin share, ~£15-20)

  • →Nairobi National Museum (self-booked, ~£8)
  • →Kenyan coffee & street food crawl
  • →Buy Safaricom SIM and draw KES cash
  • →Confirm shared safari shuttle booking
~£55
Day 2

Rift Valley road to the Mara + afternoon game drive

Maasai Mara

Early breakfast, then a shared safari shuttle/minibus down through the Great Rift Valley viewpoint at Mai Mahiu and on to Narok, arriving at the Mara around lunchtime (5-6 hours, ~£35-50 return if booked as a package with your camp, or ~£55-65 one-way for a private shared 4x4 transfer). Check into a budget tented camp or banda on the Talek/Sekenani edge of the reserve — these are simple but clean, with hot showers and meals included. In the afternoon, join a shared game drive in a conservancy adjacent to the reserve (often included in camp packages, ~£30-45 per person per drive if bought separately) looking for giraffe, zebra, hyena, antelope, lion and buffalo. Many camps include a Maasai village visit (Olpopongi or a locally run manyatta) for ~£10-20 entry — go direct through the community rather than via an agency.

🚌Shared safari shuttle Nairobi–Mara (~£35-50 return), shared 4x4 game-drive vehicle

🛏Budget tented camp or banda on the reserve edge, e.g. Talek or Sekenani (twin share, ~£25-35 per person half-board)

  • →Great Rift Valley viewpoint stop
  • →Maasai village / manyatta visit (~£10-20)
  • →Afternoon shared game drive in conservancy
~£95
Day 3

Full-day Maasai Mara National Reserve

Maasai Mara

Out at sunrise — animals are most active in the cool early hours. If you want the balloon safari, expect roughly £380-450 booked direct with a licensed operator such as Governors' Balloon Safaris (much cheaper than the £400+ tour add-on, but still a splurge). Otherwise, take a full-day shared 4x4 game drive into the Maasai Mara National Reserve with a picnic lunch: reserve entry is approx USD 100-200 per person per 24 hours depending on season, plus vehicle fee — ask your camp to bundle it into a shared-drive rate (~£70-95 per person for the day including park fees is realistic if shared 4-6 ways). Look for the Mara River crossing points if the migration is running (July-October). Back at camp for dinner and stargazing.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof, full day

🛏Same budget tented camp, Talek/Sekenani (~£25-35 per person half-board)

  • →Sunrise full-day game drive in Maasai Mara National Reserve
  • →Optional hot air balloon safari (book direct, ~£380-450)
  • →Mara River hippo/croc spotting
~£130
Day 4

Morning drive out, community lunch, back to Nairobi

Masai Mara → Nairobi

Sunrise game drive on the way out of the reserve, then breakfast and a shared shuttle back up the Rift Valley to Nairobi (about 6 hours), landing mid-afternoon. Stop for lunch at a community project on the way — Amani Ya Juu (the G Adventures 'G for Good' partner) has a Nairobi café if you get in early enough, or grab a late lunch at the Sarakasi/community café near the centre. End the trip in Nairobi with a flight no earlier than 21:00 or an overnight at a budget hotel.

🚌Shared safari shuttle Mara–Nairobi (~£35-50 return portion), airport taxi (~£15)

🛏Optional final night budget hotel in Nairobi if flying next day (~£15-20)

  • →Sunrise game drive leaving the reserve
  • →Community café / craft co-op lunch stop in Nairobi
  • →Souvenir shopping at Maasai market if timing allows

Frequently asked questions

How much does Maasai Mara Safari: Self-Launched Wildlife & Cultural Safari cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £345 per person for 4 days in Maasai Mara, Kenya. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £825 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £345 — a saving of roughly £480 (58%) per person.

How long is the Maasai Mara, Kenya trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Maasai Mara, Kenya.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a wildlife, adventure, culture trip through Maasai Mara, Kenya, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
