Take the short morning flight from Antananarivo to Toliara (Tuléar) on the south-west coast — about 1.5 hours and the only practical way to cover this distance in a day. From Toliara, hop a local taxi-brousse or a private 4x4 transfer north along the coast road to Ifaty/Mangily (about 30-45 minutes). The afternoon is free on the beach: the reef is just offshore and the water is calm.

A long but spectacular drive east across the arid south — roughly 300 km of desert and thorn scrub, taking most of the day. En route you pass Mahafaly tombs with their carved aloalo posts and stands of giant baobabs (Adansonia grandidieri). Break the journey at the Ifaty/Toliara end in the morning and arrive in Ranohira, the gateway village for Isalo National Park, by late afternoon. Spend the full day walking in Isalo National Park, one of Madagascar's finest sandstone massifs. Enter via the Namaza or Piscine Naturelle trailhead and follow a circuit through a small canyon to the Piscine Naturelle (natural swimming pool) — bring a swimsuit and plenty of water. Continue to the Cascades, widely considered among the best waterfalls on the island, with another large pool for a swim. The park is excellent for sifaka, brown lemurs and ring-tailed lemurs. Park entry and a mandatory local guide are payable at the gate in Ranohira.

Head north through the highlands on a scenic drive along the RN7. Drive back out to the RN7 and north to Ambositra, the heartland of the Zafimaniry people and Madagascar's woodcarving tradition. Ambositra is a cool, pleasant highland town — a good place to regroup before the final run south.
