A self-launched, independent version of CKC Tours & Travel's 3-day "Medium Range Joining Safari" from Nairobi to the Masai Mara. Instead of paying ~US$1,600 (~£1,270) per person for a fully guided lodge package, you book the same classic Nairobi–Mara road trip yourself: a shared/public safari shuttle or matatu down the Rift Valley, a budget camp or mid-range self-catering lodge bed, and the same park-fee + game-drive experiences, either by joining an open "seat-in-van" group safari or by hiring a guide with other travellers you meet. This itinerary assumes you join a shared safari van/jeep group (the cheapest realistic way to do game drives in the Mara, since you cannot self-drive into the reserve without your own 4x4 and permit). Costs are approximate 2024/25 backpacker rates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Nairobi to Masai Mara (via the Great Rift Valley)

Masai Mara National Reserve

Make your own way early to Nairobi (arrive the night before if you're flying in — a dorm bed at a hostel such as Wildebeest Eco Camp or Manyatta Backpackers runs ~£12-18). At around 08:00 board a shared safari shuttle or a matatu/minibus from the Country Bus Station or the departure point your camp arranges; the drive to the Mara is 5-6 hours covering ~270km. Break at a Rift Valley viewpoint near Narok or Mai Mahiu for photos and lunch (budget £5-7 for a local meal of ugali, sukuma wiki and nyama choma at a roadside stop). Arrive at your camp/lodge mid-afternoon, check in, then take the 16:00-18:30 afternoon game drive into the reserve — self-book by joining your camp's open game-drive van, or arrange directly with a licensed driver-guide. Look for elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and impala on the golden-hour plains, plus your first lion sightings. Evening: dinner at the camp (many budget camps include full board at ~£15-25/night) and swap wildlife-spotting tips with other travellers around the fire.

🚌Shared safari shuttle/minibus from Nairobi to Masai Mara (~4,500-6,000 KES / £28-38 one way), 5-6 hrs; or matatu to Narok then onward minibus to Sekenani/Talek gate (~£18-25 total). Safari van/jeep game drives arranged locally.

🛏Budget safari camp or tented camp inside/near the reserve (e.g. Mara Explorers Camp or similar) - dorm/twin ~£15-25 pp for the night, full board optional

  • →Scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley with a Narok/Mai Mahiu photo stop
  • →Afternoon self-arranged game drive in Masai Mara National Reserve (16:00-18:30)
  • →Sunset wildlife spotting on the plains
  • →Optional visit to a Maasai village on the way in (pay entrance ~£10-15 directly, not bundled)
~£105
Day 2

Full Day in the Masai Mara Reserve

Masai Mara National Reserve

Rise before sunrise for a 06:30 departure — this is the best time to catch big cats still hunting before the heat sets in. Spend the morning in the reserve with a packed breakfast (many camps provide this; confirm the night before or buy supplies in Narok the day before — bread, bananas, boiled eggs, water ~£4). Work the Mara Triangle and the rivers for hippos, crocodiles and, in July-October, the Great Migration wildebeest crossing at the Mara River (ask your driver to target crossing points, though sightings are never guaranteed — it's a wild phenomenon). Lunch back at the camp or a picnic site (~£5-7 if not included). Take a second afternoon game drive, then return for sunset. Swap your game-drive group freely — if you book a seat-in-van, you can also split a private 4x4 with 2-4 other travellers you meet and split the ~£450-550/day vehicle cost (works out far cheaper per head than a solo booking). Evening: dinner at camp, early night before the long drive back.

🚌Local safari van/jeep used for the whole day's game drives (included in the seat-in-van or private-hire arrangement); no long-distance travel today.

🛏Same budget safari camp/tented camp as night 1 (~£15-25 pp, usually full board)

  • →Sunrise game drive in Masai Mara National Reserve (06:30 departure)
  • →Search for the Big Five and, in season, the Great Migration river crossings at the Mara River
  • →Midday picnic or camp lunch among the plains
  • →Afternoon game drive and sunset on the savannah
  • →Optional shared-vehicle upgrade: split a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with other travellers for a better wildlife-viewing angle (~£90-120 pp if shared 4 ways)
~£150
Day 3

Masai Mara to Nairobi

Nairobi

Take one last early-morning game drive (06:30-08:30) if time allows, then break camp and depart around 09:00-10:00. The camp/driver will provide a packed lunch for the road (confirm the night before — otherwise buy supplies in Narok, ~£4). Drive back up the escarpment and into Nairobi, arriving in the city centre by mid-to-late afternoon (~17:00). From Nairobi you can connect to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (matatu/bolt/uber ~£6-10 for a 45-min ride, or a shared airport shuttle ~£3-5). If you have time, drop into the Maasai Market for souvenir bargaining before heading to the airport — do this independently rather than on a tour-led shopping stop.

🚌Shared safari shuttle/minibus back to Nairobi (~£28-38 one way, ~5-6 hrs); Bolt/Uber or shared shuttle to Jomo Kenyatta Airport (~£3-10).

🛏N/A (onward travel) - optional Nairobi hostel bed ~£15 if you're staying the night

  • →Optional early-morning final game drive
  • →Return drive through the Rift Valley to Nairobi
  • →Self-arranged visit to the Maasai Market for souvenirs (Nairobi)
  • →Independent airport transfer via Bolt/Uber or shared shuttle

Frequently asked questions

How much does 3 Days Masai Mara Self-Launched Budget Safari (DIY Version of CKC Tours Joining Safari) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £520 per person for 3 days in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with CKC Tours & Travel?+

Yes — CKC Tours & Travel charges around £1,270 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £520 — a saving of roughly £750 (59%) per person.

How long is the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya trip?+

This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a wildlife, adventure, budget trip through Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
