A DIY version of MoldovaTovisit's 4-day guided Moldova loop — Chișinău's city centre, a day trip to Soviet-era Tiraspol and the Tighina (Bender) Fortress, the Cricova underground wine city, and the cliffside cave monasteries of Orheiul Vechi in Butuceni. Built for solo travellers on local buses, trolleybuses and marshrutkas (shared minibuses), with self-booked hostel or guesthouse stays. Moldova is one of Europe's cheapest destinations, so this is a seriously good-value 4 days. Costs are approximate 2026 backpacker estimates.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Chișinău & self-guided old town walk

Chișinău

Fly into Chișinău International Airport (KIV) — from the UK, Wizz Air often runs cheap direct Stansted flights, or come overland by bus from Bucharest (~7-8 hrs, ~£15-20). Trolleybus #30 runs from the airport into the centre for around 6 MDL (about £0.25); a taxi should cost no more than 150-200 MDL (~£7-9) — agree the price first. Check into a central hostel or budget hotel near Stefan cel Mare park. Spend the afternoon on a self-guided walk: Piața Marii Adunări Naționale, the Cathedral and Bell Tower, Stefan cel Mare park, the Triumphal Arch, and the Piata Centrala market for cheap local produce. In the evening eat at a local canteen-style spot — plăcinte (filled flatbreads) and a bowl of zeamă soup for a few pounds — and browse the wine bars around the old town.

🚌Airport trolleybus #30 (~6 MDL) or taxi (~150-200 MDL); old town on foot

Day 2

Transnistria day trip: Tighina Fortress & Tiraspol

Tiraspol

Catch an early marshrutka or bus from Chișinău's Autogara Centrală (or the Gara de Sud) to Tiraspol — roughly 1.5-2 hrs, ~50-70 MDL (~£2.50-3.50). Break the journey in Bender (Tighina) to walk the medieval Tighina Fortress on the Dniester bank (small entry fee). Then carry on into Tiraspol, the de facto capital of Transnistria: the Soviet-era streets, the Suvorov monument, the House of Soviets, the Lenin statue, and the T-34 tank memorial. Ask for a registration slip at the border checkpoint on arrival — it's free for most nationalities and normally gives you 24 hours, so keep it with your passport. Have lunch in a classic Soviet-style canteen (borscht, pelmeni, compot — around £3-4). Return to Chișinău by marshrutka in the early evening. Note: bring cash in lei or exchange at a Tiraspol kiosk for Transnistrian rubles — foreign cards generally don't work there.

Day 3

Cricova wine city & Orheiul Vechi cave monasteries

Cricova / Butuceni

Morning: book a Cricova underground wine city tour directly on the winery's website or by phone/email at least a few days ahead (the standard tour with tasting runs around 350-500 MDL, ~£15-22 depending on the package and group size). Reach Cricova by trolleybus #24 from the city centre to the Cricova turn-off or the village, then walk or take a short taxi to the winery — allow time, tours are at fixed slots. You'll ride through 60+ km of limestone tunnels lined with wine bottles and finish with a tasting. Afternoon: get back into Chișinău and pick up a marshrutka toward Trebujeni/Butuceni for Orheiul Vechi Cultural and Natural Reserve (~1.5 hrs, ~£2-3). Walk the reserve: the cliffside St. Maria Dormata cave monastery above the Răut river, the Pestere and Butuceni promontories, and the archaeological remains. Overnight in Butuceni/Trebujeni village in a rural guesthouse with dinner — this is the highlight of the trip and much better than returning to the city.

🚌Trolleybus to Cricova (~£0.30); marshrutka Chișinău–Butuceni/Trebujeni (~£2-3)

🛏Rural guesthouse in Butuceni/Trebujeni (~£15-20/night with breakfast)

Day 4

Sunrise over Orheiul Vechi & return to Chișinău

Butuceni / Chișinău

Wake early for a quiet walk along the cliffs above the Răut — the reserve is at its best before the day-trippers arrive. Have breakfast at the guesthouse, then take the marshrutka back into Chișinău (~1.5 hrs, ~£2-3). If your flight is later, spend the remaining time at the Chisinau city history museum or pick up last-minute Moldovan wine and preserves at the market. Airport trolleybus #30 back to KIV. If you're continuing onward to Bucharest, overnight buses and daytime coaches leave several times daily (~£15-20).

🚌Marshrutka Butuceni–Chișinău (~£2-3); airport trolleybus #30 (~£0.30)

🛏—

  • →Sunrise walk in Orheiul Vechi reserve
  • →Optional: Chisinau city museum
  • →Souvenir and wine shopping

Frequently asked questions

How much does 4 Days Moldova Self-Launched: Chișinău, Transnistria, Cricova & Orheiul Vechi cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £141 per person for 4 days in Moldova. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with MoldovaTovisit?+

Yes — MoldovaTovisit charges around £3,800,000 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £141 — a saving of roughly £3,799,859 (100%) per person.

How long is the Moldova trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Moldova.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, adventure, budget trip through Moldova, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
