3 Weeks Great Mongolia & Horseback Trip — Self-Launched
21 days · Mongolia
TTRMongolia charges £2,200
No-markup version: ~£890 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched 21-day loop from Ulaanbaatar through the Gobi Desert, the Orkhon Valley, the Khangai Mountains and Lake Khuvsgul — rebuilt from the TTRMongolia group tour as something you arrange yourself. You'll join a small local Gobi tour or shared 4x4 out of UB, stay with nomadic host families, ride horses for three days in the Orkhon Valley, soak in Tsenkher hot springs and swim in Khuvsgul. Costs are backpacker/budget estimates in GBP and assume you book guesthouse or ger-camp beds, share 4x4/minivan costs with other travellers (or take public intercity buses where they exist), and eat mostly local food. Note: rural Mongolia has no real independent transport network outside the UB–Darkhan–Erdenet corridors, so the realistic "self-launched" version means booking local operators directly rather than via a western marketplace — still typically 40-60% cheaper.
Day-by-day
Arrive Ulaanbaatar, prep & depart for White Stupa (Tsagaan Suvarga)
Ulaanbaatar → Tsagaan Suvarga
Land at Chinggis Khaan International, buy a local SIM (Mobicom/Unitel, ~£6 for 10GB) at the airport, change cash to tugrik and stock up on water/snacks. If you're joining a local Gobi tour or a shared 4x4, this is departure day — most budget operators leave mid-morning from the State Department Store area. Alternatively overnight in UB and leave at dawn Day 2. The drive south is ~6-7 hours on paved road then dirt track.
🚌Shared 4x4/van from UB, ~£40-60 pp shared (or public bus UB–Dalandzadgad ~£12 if going direct to Gobi)
🛏Tourist ger camp near Tsagaan Suvarga, ~£12-15 pp/night (or basic guesthouse)
- →Buy SIM card and change money in UB
- →Join shared 4x4/minivan heading south
- →Visit White Stupa (Tsagaan Suvarga) limestone cliffs
- →Panoramic sunset over steppe and badlands
Yoliin Am & Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park
Yoliin Am
Continue south into Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Base yourself in a ger camp near Yoliin Am or the park entrance. Walk the Yoliin Am valley — a narrow canyon that keeps ice in its gorge well into summer — and visit the small natural history museum with dinosaur eggs and bones. Bring layers: it's cold in the shaded gorge even in July.

🛏Ger camp near Yoliin Am, ~£12-18 pp/night
- →Visit natural history museum with dinosaur eggs and bones

Khongoriin Els
Drive west to the 'Singing Dunes' — 200m high, stretching 180km. Climb the ridge and run/slide down, then walk to the nearby Khongoriin River for a wash and cool-off. Sunset from the dunes is the highlight. Cash is king out here; there are no ATMs south of UB.

Walk the base of the cliffs looking for fossils (don't take any — it's illegal). This is the end of many standard Gobi tours, so it's a good point to split from a shared group.

- →Visit Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs)
- →Sunset photography from the cliffs

Ongi Monastery ruins
Ongi Monastery
Long driving day north toward the Ongi River valley. The ruined Ongi Monastery complex (two sites, north and south of the river) was destroyed during the 1930s purges — sobering but beautiful. Overnight in a nearby ger camp; some operators run this as a homestay.

Head into the Khangai foothills to a host family who will be your riding base. Meet the family, meet the horses, learn basic Mongolian riding commands, and help pack gear onto yaks. Cook a Mongolian barbecue (khorkhog) together — hot rocks and mutton in a sealed milk churn. This is the start of your riding leg.

- →Meet Mongolian host family
- →Introduction to horses and packing yaks
- →Help prepare Mongolian barbecue (khorkhog) dinner

Horseback riding begins — Shireet Lake
Shireet Lake
Mount up and ride out to Shireet Lake with a local horse guide, yaks carrying gear. Riding is typically 3-5 hours, walking pace with short breaks. Bring your own basic PPE if you want it — the operator on the original tour was criticised for not providing any, so a cheap riding helmet and gloves are worth packing. Bring cash for your horse guide; tip/gratuity is expected separately.

🛏Campsite by Shireet Lake or host family ger, ~£10-15 pp
- →Horseback riding to Shireet Lake

Full riding day around Shireet Lake

Then the practical bit: you'll need a transfer onward to Kharkhorin (Karakhorin) — either back to the family base to collect a vehicle or arranged pickup. Some riders overnight near the falls first.

Shine Ider, Khuvsgul Province
Long transfer day north through the Khangai Mountains — river valleys, forested passes and open high pasture. Picnic lunch en route. Overnight in Shine Ider village (basic guesthouse) or camp. Stock up on cash and any supplies here: banking and shops thin out badly further north.

Frequently asked questions
How much does 3 Weeks Great Mongolia & Horseback Trip — Self-Launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £890 per person for 21 days in Mongolia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with TTRMongolia?+
Yes — TTRMongolia charges around £2,200 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £890 — a saving of roughly £1,310 (60%) per person.
How long is the Mongolia trip?+
This itinerary runs 21 days, covering 21 day-by-day stops through Mongolia.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, backpacker, culture trip through Mongolia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
