Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates per person in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Dubrovnik — Old Town orientation

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Fly into Dubrovnik (DBV) and take the Platanus airport shuttle bus to the Old Town (Pile Gate) or Gruz bus station, around £7-8. Check into a hostel or guesthouse in or just outside the Old Town walls. Spend the late afternoon wandering the Stradun, the city walls exterior and the old harbour, then eat cheaply at a konoba or bakery (burek and pastries are a few pounds). If you want to walk the city walls, do it early tomorrow or late today to avoid peak heat and crowds — tickets are about £30, so check whether it's worth it for you.

Dubrovnik to Perast — Our Lady of the Rocks and Bay of Kotor

Perast & Kotor, Montenegro

Cross the border into Montenegro. The cheapest route is the local bus from Dubrovnik bus station to Herceg Novi (about 1.5-2 hours, £12-15), then a local bus or shared taxi along the bay to Perast. In Perast, take the small shuttle boat out to the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks (about £5-6 return, boats run regularly from the waterfront) and explore the church and its treasury of silver votive plaques. Back in Perast, wander the baroque waterfront palaces and grab lunch. Continue by local bus around the bay to Kotor (about 30-40 minutes, £2-3). Note: bring your passport for the border and check current crossing rules.

Then hike the medieval walls and steps up to the Sveti Ivan (San Giovanni) fortress — entry is around £8-10 and the climb takes 1-1.5 hours with big views over the fjord-like bay. In the afternoon, either go sea kayaking in the bay (book direct with a local operator or via GetYourGuide, £20-25 for a half-day) or take a local bus to the beaches at Herceg Novi or Dobrota. Walk the grounds of this protected monument with around 127 tree and shrub species. Next, arrange a visit and tasting at a small family winery such as Dabović (contact directly by email/phone; a tour and tasting with local brandy and snacks is roughly £15-20). Contact a local family apiary (several run five-generation operations and welcome visitors — ask your guesthouse to call ahead) for a talk and honey tasting, around £10-15. Then visit a small countryside cheese-making farm for a demonstration and a farm-to-table lunch with the family (about £20-25 including lunch). Arrange these by asking your host to phone directly — it's far cheaper than a booked tour. Evening free in Trebinje's pretty plane-tree squares for a cheap local dinner.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Western Balkans: Dubrovnik to Sarajevo cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £534 per person for 9 days in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina & Croatia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,299 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £534 — a saving of roughly £1,765 (77%) per person.

How long is the Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina & Croatia trip?+

This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina & Croatia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, foodie, hiking trip through Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina & Croatia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
