A self-launched version of the Much Better Adventures 5-day Durmitor adventure: hike the Black Lake, raft the UNESCO-listed Tara River Canyon, summit Prutaš (7,851ft) and canyoneer Nevidio Canyon — all bookable independently. Base yourself in Žabljak guesthouses, use local buses and shared transfers from Podgorica, and book rafting/canyoning direct with Žabljak operators. Same wild Montenegro, roughly half the price.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Podgorica to Žabljak and the Black Lake

Žabljak

Fly into Podgorica (TGD) with Ryanair/Wizz Air from the UK. Instead of the included private transfer, take the local bus from Podgorica bus station to Žabljak (roughly 2.5-3hrs, from ~£10-12 / €12-14) or split a taxi (~£110 / €130 total if 2-4 of you). Check into a small family-run guesthouse or soba (private room) in Žabljak, the gateway to Durmitor National Park. In the late afternoon walk the flat 3.5km loop around Crno Jezero (Black Lake) — forest trails beneath Mount Bear with turquoise water that's genuinely swimmable in summer. Eat a hearty Montenegrin dinner (kačamak, grilled trout, local cheese) at your guesthouse.

🚌Local bus Podgorica → Žabljak, ~£10-12; or shared taxi ~£110 split between 2-4 people (~£27-55 each)

🛏Family-run guesthouse/soba in Žabljak (private room, twin share) — ~£18-25 per person

  • →Crno Jezero (Black Lake) self-guided loop walk
  • →Žabljak village wander
  • →Traditional Montenegrin dinner
~£45
Day 2

Rafting the Tara River Canyon

Tara Canyon / Žabljak

Book a Tara River rafting day trip directly with one of the Žabljak or Bastasi-based outfitters the night before (or via GetYourGuide) — no need for a tour operator. Most include wetsuit, helmet, guide, a 9-mile (14km) lower-canyon run through Grade 2-3 rapids, and a traditional Montenegrin lunch at a riverside camp. Rates run roughly €45-60 per person including lunch. You'll raft beneath the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, over Europe's deepest gorge (4,265ft). Add the optional zipline over the canyon afterwards (~€10-15) if you want the bird's-eye version. In the afternoon, your driver or a shared taxi can stop at the stećci medieval tombstones and Barno Jezero (Fish Lake) / Devil's Lake on the return to Žabljak.

🚌Shared minivan transfer to rafting put-in arranged by the outfitter or your guesthouse (~£8-12), typically included in the rafting rate

🛏Family-run guesthouse/soba in Žabljak — ~£18-25 per person

  • →Tara River whitewater rafting (Grade 2-3, 9 miles)
  • →Optional canyon zipline
  • →Stećci medieval tombstones
  • →Fish Lake & Devil's Lake stops
~£70
Day 3

Summit Prutaš (7,851ft)

Durmitor National Park

A full mountain day — up to 6hrs walking and ~2,300ft of ascent on rocky trails with some exposed ridge sections. Self-navigate the classic Prutaš route without a guide: catch a local taxi or shared 4x4 from Žabljak to the Sedlo/Škrka trailhead area (~£20-30 return split between a few of you), then follow the well-marked path via Škrčko Ždrijelo Pass (6,936ft) to the grassy summit. From the top you get panoramic views of the whole Durmitor range and Bobotov Kuk. Download the route in advance on Maps.me or the Komoot/Kamoot Durmitor pack — signal is patchy. Bring sturdy boots, trekking poles, plenty of water and a packed lunch. Back in Žabljak, celebrate with dinner at your guesthouse.

🚌Local taxi or shared 4x4 to/from trailhead, ~£20-30 return split between passengers

🛏Family-run guesthouse/soba in Žabljak — ~£18-25 per person

  • →Summit Prutaš via Škrčko Ždrijelo Pass
  • →Durmitor National Park self-guided hike

Day 4

Nevidio Canyon canyoneering, then Podgorica

Nevidio Canyon / Podgorica

Book Nevidio canyoning direct with a local Pošćenje or Žabljak operator (roughly €60-80 per person, often including gear, guide and lunch) — it's the only way in, and guides are essential for the rope sections. Nevidio is a 2-mile canyon that squeezes to just 5ft wide, with swimming, sliding and jumping through vivid blue-green pools; wetsuits, neoprene socks, canyoning shoes and helmets are provided. Afterwards, transfer to Podgorica (local bus from Žabljak ~£10-12, or shared taxi). Check into a budget/3-star hotel or hostel in the city centre, then head out for a farewell dinner and a taste of Podgorica's nightlife on Njegoševa and the riverside.

🚌Shared transfer to Pošćenje/Nevidio (~£10-15); local bus Žabljak → Podgorica ~£10-12

🛏Budget hotel or hostel in central Podgorica (private room) — ~£25-40 per person

  • →Nevidio Canyon canyoning (guided — essential)
  • →Podgorica city centre dinner & nightlife
~£105
Day 5

Goodbye Montenegro

Podgorica

Breakfast at your hotel, then take a local taxi to Podgorica Airport (~€20 / £17, 15 mins) for your flight home. If you're not flying until later, Podgorica's old town, the Morača riverside and the Cathedral of the Resurrection are worth an easy morning stroll.

🚌Local taxi to Podgorica Airport, ~£17

🛏None (departure day)

  • →Podgorica old town stroll (optional)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Raft, Hike and Canyon in Montenegro — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £325 per person for 5 days in Montenegro. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £1,095 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £325 — a saving of roughly £770 (70%) per person.

How long is the Montenegro trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Montenegro.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, backpacker trip through Montenegro, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
