Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Morocco Travel Experts' 7-day Casablanca loop, done with local transport, hostel and riad bookings, and self-bookable guides. You'll cover the same arc — Casablanca's Hassan II Mosque, blue Chefchaouen, Roman Volubilis and Meknes, a deep dive into Fes medina, a night in a Sahara desert camp at Erg Chebbi, Todra Gorge and Dades Valley, Ait Ben Haddou and the Tizi n'Tichka pass, then Marrakech's landmarks — using CTM/SUPRATOURS coaches, shared grand taxis and the overnight option where it saves a day. Costs are rough backpacker/budget estimates in GBP and assume shared dorm or budget double rooms, eating at local cafes and one or two paid guided experiences per city.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Casablanca to Chefchaouen

Casablanca → Chefchaouen

Start early in Casablanca and visit the Hassan II Mosque (guided interior tour ~£12, book a slot the day before or walk up for the first morning entry). Then head to Casa Voyageurs station and take a CTM or SUPRATOURS coach to Chefchaouen — direct services run a few times daily and take 6-7 hours (~£14-18), or take the train to Tangier or Fes and connect by bus. Arrive in the evening, check into a cheap medina guesthouse, and wander the blue-painted alleys after dark when the day-trippers have gone. Eat a cheap tagine or a bissara (fava bean soup) in the square.

🚌CTM/SUPRATOURS coach Casablanca → Chefchaouen, 6-7 hrs, ~£15

🛏Budget medina guesthouse/dorm in Chefchaouen (~£12-16)

Morning hike up to the Spanish Mosque for the classic view over the blue town, then take a shared grand taxi or local bus to Ouazzane and onwards toward Moulay Idriss. From Moulay Idriss it's a short shared taxi hop to Volubilis Roman ruins (~£6 entry) — spend 1.5-2 hours among the mosaics and arches. Then a shared taxi to Meknes (~£3-4), where you can see Bab Mansour gate and Lahdim Square for free before catching an evening train to Fes (~£4-6, about 45 minutes). Check into a riad-style guesthouse in the Fes medina.

Book a licensed local medina guide through GetYourGuide or your riad the evening before (~£20-28 per person, or less if joining a small group) — this is the one place a guide is genuinely worth it. Cover the Royal Palace golden gate, the Jewish quarter (Mellah), Al-Qarawiyyin University courtyard, Bou Inania Madrasa (~£2), Nejjarine Fountain, Bab Boujloud (Blue Gate) and the tanneries from a terrace (small tip expected). Finish with a panoramic view from the ancient Borj Nord fortress (~£2). Skip the guided 'factory' commissions and buy leather or ceramics direct from workshops you choose.

Day 4

Fes – Ifrane – Ziz Valley to the Merzouga dunes

Fes → Ifrane → Merzouga

Take an early CTM coach from Fes toward Merzouga/Rissani (~7-8 hrs, ~£15-18) — the route climbs through Ifrane (Alpine-style 'Moroccan Switzerland') and drops through the Ziz Valley palm oasis, both visible from the road; ask the driver for the best photo stops or hop off briefly at Midelt if you want a lunch break. Book a desert camp package directly with a Merzouga operator ahead of time (~£35-50 per person, including sunset camel ride, dinner, Berber music by the fire and a tent, plus 4x4 pickup from town). Alternatively pick up a shared 4x4 transfer from Merzouga village to your camp around 4-5pm.

Sahara sunrise – Todra Gorge to Dades Valley

Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley

Wake before dawn for sunrise over the dunes (free, and the best moment of the trip). Ride back by camel or 4x4 to Merzouga village, then take a shared grand taxi or local bus to Tinerhir (~2.5-3 hrs, ~£8-10). Walk the Todra Gorge — a free, flat 20-30 minute stroll between 300m cliffs; the more energetic can walk to the far end or try a short via ferrata/guided climb. Optionally stop in Rissani or Erfoud for fossil workshops on the way. In the late afternoon take a shared taxi to Boumalne Dades (~£5) and stay in a valley guesthouse; a dinner of Berber pizza at the guesthouse is a traveller favourite.

Take an early shared taxi or local bus along the Dades/Valley of Roses road to Kelaat M'Gouna (~£4) and onward to Ouarzazate (~£6). From Ouarzazate catch a shared grand taxi to Ait Ben Haddou (~£3-4) and spend 1.5 hours exploring the ksar (exterior free, some interiors ~£2). Optionally stop at the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate (~£5) if you're a film buff. Frequently asked questions

How much does 7-Day Morocco Self-Launched: Casablanca, Chefchaouen, Fes & the Sahara cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £470 per person for 7 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Morocco Travel Experts LLC?+

Yes — Morocco Travel Experts LLC charges around £870 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £470 — a saving of roughly £400 (46%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, adventure, backpacker trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
