On The Go Tours charges £920

£544saved per person (59%)

No-markup version: ~£376 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of On The Go Tours' 8-day Morocco circuit — Marrakech medina, the desert road over the High Atlas to Ouarzazate, a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes with a night in a Berber camp, Todra Gorge, Kasbah Amridil and the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Benhaddou. You do it yourself using Morocco's excellent (and cheap) CTM/ Supratours coaches plus one locally booked shared 4x4/minibus for the desert leg, booking riads and guesthouses direct and picking up guides and camel treks locally in Merzouga. Note: this operator's version is aimed at teens travelling with family; the self-launched version works equally well for solo travellers and small groups of friends. Costs are rough backpacker/mid-budget estimates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Marrakech — medina orientation

Marrakech

Land at Menara Airport and take bus 19 or a petit taxi (agree the price, ~MAD 100 / £8) to your riad in the medina. Spend the afternoon getting lost (deliberately) in the souks, walk the ramparts past Bab Agnaou, and get your first look at Djemaa El Fna as the food stalls fire up at dusk. Book your onward desert transport tonight — either a CTM/Supratours coach the following morning or a seat in a shared minibus arranged through your riad.

🚌Airport bus 19 or petit taxi (~£8)

🛏Riad or guesthouse in the medina (dorm £8–12 / private double £20–30 per room)

  • →Djemaa El Fna square at sunset
  • →Souk Semmarine wander
  • →Bab Agnaou and the medina walls
~£45
Day 2

Marrakech to Ouarzazate over the Tizi n'Tichka

Ouarzazate

Take the morning CTM or Supratours coach from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (~5 hrs, ~MAD 100–130 / £8–11) — the road over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) is one of the great drives in Africa, so grab a window seat. Arrive, check into a budget hotel, and in the afternoon walk to the Atlas Film Studios (entry ~MAD 50 / £4) where Gladiator and Game of Thrones scenes were shot — you can visit independently or join a 45-minute local studio tour. Optional sunset quad-biking from the edge of town (~MAD 300–400 / £25–33).

🚌CTM/Supratours coach Marrakech–Ouarzazate (~£10)

🛏Budget hotel in Ouarzazate (£15–22)

  • →Tizi n'Tichka pass scenery
  • →Atlas Film Studios self-visit
  • →Optional quad biking
~£48
Day 3

Ouarzazate to Merzouga — camel trek into Erg Chebbi

Merzouga / Erg Chebbi

This is the day to pre-book: either the public CTM coach Ouarzazate–Rissani (~6 hrs) plus a shared taxi to Merzouga, or (simpler and often similar in price) a seat in a shared minibus run by Merzouga desert-camp operators that collects from Ouarzazate hotels — expect ~£30–40 including the transfer, arranged a few days ahead by WhatsApp. In Merzouga meet your camel guide in late afternoon and ride ~1.5 hrs into the dunes to a traditional Berber camp: tagine dinner cooked over coals, drums around the fire, and a night under the stars in a tent.

🚌Shared minibus Ouarzazate–Merzouga (~£30–40) or CTM coach + shared taxi

🛏Traditional Berber desert camp, shared tent (£18–28 including dinner and breakfast)

  • →Camel trek into Erg Chebbi dunes
  • →Berber camp dinner and live music
  • →Stargazing in the Sahara
~£70
Day 4

Sahara sunrise, then on to Todra Gorge

Todra Gorge (Tinghir)

Wake before dawn, climb the nearest dune for sunrise, then camel (or 4x4) back to Merzouga for a proper breakfast and a shower. If you're travelling with new camp friends, split a grand taxi or shared minibus Merzouga–Tinghir (~3 hrs) — the classic route via Rissani, Erfoud and the palm oases of Tinejdad. Base yourself in a guesthouse at the mouth of the gorge, then walk the 300 m canyon slot between the 160 m walls in the late afternoon light. Rock climbing guides can be arranged locally in Tinghir (~£35–50 half day) if that appeals; the carpet cooperative at Tizgui is a 20-minute walk and free to visit (no obligation to buy).

🚌Grand taxi / shared minibus Merzouga–Tinghir (~£8–12 per person shared)

🛏Guesthouse at Todra Gorge (£12–20)

  • →Sahara sunrise on the dunes
  • →Todra Gorge canyon walk
  • →Tizgui carpet cooperative
  • →14th-century irrigation wells (khettara)
  • →Optional rock climbing
~£42
Day 5

Todra Gorge to Ait Benhaddou via Kasbah Amridil

Ait Benhaddou

Head west by shared minibus/grand taxi to Skoura (~2.5 hrs), then a short taxi hop to Kasbah Amridil — a beautifully restored 17th-century kasbah with an interior you can explore, entry ~MAD 20–30 (£2). Continue to Ait Benhaddou (another ~1 hr, or combine with a driver for the day, ~£25–35 shared between 3–4 people). Check into a guesthouse on the river side, then cross the stepping stones late afternoon when the mud-brick ksar glows orange. A local guide from the village (~MAD 100–150 for a group) brings the history alive, but the site itself is free to walk.

🚌Shared minibus / grand taxi legs Tinghir–Skoura–Ait Benhaddou (~£12–18)

🛏Family-run guesthouse opposite the ksar (£15–22, dinner £6–8)

  • →Kasbah Amridil interior visit
  • →Sunset over Ait Benhaddou ksar
  • →Optional local village guide
~£48
Day 6

Ait Benhaddou back to Marrakech over the High Atlas

Marrakech

Climb up to the granary at the top of the ksar in the morning before the day-trippers arrive, then take a shared minibus or CTM coach back to Marrakech over the High Atlas (~3.5 hrs, ~£8–10). Arrive in the afternoon and do your own culture circuit: Bahia Palace (~MAD 70), the Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia minaret and the Mellah (Jewish Quarter) — all walkable from each other. A licensed medina guide is MAD 200–300 per group if you'd rather not navigate alone, bookable through your riad.

🚌Shared minibus or coach Ait Benhaddou–Marrakech (~£9)

🛏Riad or guesthouse in the medina (£10–25)

  • →Ait Benhaddou granary at dawn

Optional big-ticket morning: a sunrise hot-air balloon over the Atlas foothills (~£150–180 booked via GetYourGuide, roughly 3x cheaper than many resort add-ons, includes transfer and breakfast) — or sleep in and do a traditional hammam and scrub at a neighbourhood bathhouse (~£15–25). Afternoon in the Majorelle Garden and Jardin Secret (~£12 combined), then a final dinner graze around the Djemaa El Fna food stalls — grilled skewers and harira for £5–8 a head — with fresh orange juice for 40p.

🚌Walking + petit taxi hops in town (~£4)

🛏Riad or guesthouse in the medina (£10–25)

  • →Optional hot-air balloon flight

Frequently asked questions

How much does Morocco Adventure: Marrakech, Sahara & Todra Gorge — Self-Launched 8 Days cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £376 per person for 8 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with On The Go Tours?+

Yes — On The Go Tours charges around £920 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £376 — a saving of roughly £544 (59%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, backpacker trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
