Self-Launched 4-Day Sahara Desert Route: Fes to Marrakech (Budget Camp Edition)
4 days · Morocco
Cultural Morocco Tours charges £869
No-markup version: ~£300 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
An independent, self-launched version of the classic Fes-to-Marrakech Sahara loop: Middle Atlas cedar forests and Ifrane, the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga with a night in a budget desert camp, Gnawa music in Khamlia, Todra and Dades gorges, and Ait Benhaddou before crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass into Marrakech. Instead of a private guided car, you use Morocco's excellent shared grand taxis, CTM/Supratours coaches and locally booked desert-camp transfers — all self-bookable via GetYourGuide, hostel reception or directly with camps and guesthouses. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP and assume shared/dorm or budget private rooms.
Day-by-day
Fes → Merzouga: Middle Atlas, Ifrane and a night in the dunes
Fes to Merzouga
Leave Fes early (07:30-08:00) by CTM or Supratours coach toward Merzouga/Rissani (roughly 8-9 hours; book online a day or two ahead, ~£15-20). Break the drive with a short stop in Ifrane — the alpine-style 'Little Switzerland' with its stone lion statue — and admire the Atlas cedar forests around Azrou (Barbary macaques on the roadside). Continue via Midelt and Erfoud. Most budget desert camps (e.g. Tiziri-style camps in Erg Chebbi) include a 4x4 pickup from Merzouga village or Rissani in their rate, or you can grab a shared 4x4 (~£5-8). Arrive late afternoon, drop bags, then take the classic sunset camel trek into the dunes (~£15-20, often bundled with camp). Evening: tagine dinner, campfire and Berber drumming at the camp. Book the camp via Booking.com or GetYourGuide and confirm pickup logistics by WhatsApp in advance.
🚌CTM/Supratours coach Fes–Merzouga/Rissani ~£15-20; shared 4x4 to camp ~£5-8; optional camel trek ~£15-20
🛏Budget desert camp, Erg Chebbi (shared tent or basic private tent, ~£20-25 pp incl. dinner & breakfast)
- →Coach through the Middle Atlas
- →Ifrane lion statue & cedar forest stop
- →Sunset camel ride on Erg Chebbi dunes
- →Berber campfire and drumming night
Merzouga: Khamlia, oases and Gnawa music
Merzouga
Sunrise over the dunes (free, and the best photo light of the trip), then breakfast at camp and a 4x4 or camel return to Merzouga village. Spend the day locally: walk or cycle to the Hassi Labied oasis palm groves, then take a shared taxi or hire a bike to Khamlia, the Amazigh/Gnawa village where descendants of sub-Saharan musicians live. A small Gnawa music performance at one of the village's family-run music houses costs around £5-8 and is a genuine highlight, not a staged stop. Lunch is a madfouna (desert-stuffed pizza) or a home-cooked meal with a local family (~£5-7). Afternoon: pool time at a budget guesthouse with dune views, or an optional quad-bike session (~£20-25). Overnight in Merzouga village rather than a second camp night to keep costs down.
🚌Local shared taxis / bike hire around Merzouga & Khamlia ~£5-8
🛏Budget guesthouse/auberge in Merzouga or Hassi Labied (~£15-20 pp, private room)
- →Dune sunrise

Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley → Ouarzazate road
Merzouga to Ouarzazate (via Tinghir & Dades)
This is the long transit day. Take an early shared grand taxi or local bus from Merzouga/Rissani to Tinghir (~2 hours, ~£6-8), then a short shared taxi to Todra Gorge (~£2-3), where you can walk the canyon floor between 300m cliffs for free. Continue by shared taxi or CTM bus to Boumalne Dades (~£4-6), and if time allows a quick detour into Dades Gorge with its switchback road and rock formations. Stop at El Kelaa M'Gouna (rose town) and Skoura oasis en route. Note that reaching Ouarzazate entirely by public transport in one day is tight — the practical backpacker option is to overnight in Boumalne Dades or Tinghir and continue early, or to pre-book a shared 4x4 transfer Merzouga–Ouarzazate through your guesthouse (~£25-35 pp). Arrive Ouarzazate for dinner.
🚌Shared grand taxis Merzouga–Tinghir ~£7 then Tinghir–Boumalne ~£5; or pre-booked shared 4x4 Merzouga–Ouarzazate ~£25-35

Ouarzazate to Marrakech
Morning visit to the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate (~£6 entry; Gladiator and Game of Thrones sets) if you're interested, then a shared grand taxi (~£4-5) or local bus 30km to Ait Benhaddou. Entry to the UNESCO ksar is free (small fee only to cross into the granary at the top, ~£2); allow 1.5-2 hours to climb through the earthen lanes for valley views. Continue by shared taxi to Télouet/Ouarzazate road junction, then catch a CTM/Supratours coach or shared grand taxi over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) to Marrakech (~£8-12, 3.5-4 hours). Aim to arrive Marrakech early evening and walk or take a petit taxi to your riad/hostel in the medina.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched 4-Day Sahara Desert Route: Fes to Marrakech (Budget Camp Edition) cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £300 per person for 4 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Cultural Morocco Tours?+
Yes — Cultural Morocco Tours charges around £869 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £300 — a saving of roughly £569 (65%) per person.
How long is the Morocco trip?+
This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Morocco.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
