A self-launched version of Morhara Morocco Tours' private 3-day Marrakech–Fes desert run. Instead of a private 4x4 and guide, you piece the same route together with a shared minibus transfer on Day 1 to Ait Ben Haddou and Skoura, a shared 3-day desert shuttle service (or CTM/local bus legs) from Skoura through the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge and Merzouga, and a long-distance bus from Merzouga to Fes via the Ziz Valley, Midelt and Ifrane. You still sleep in a Berber guesthouse, ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes, overnight at a Sahara desert camp with live music, and stop at the argan cooperative, Telouet, Ait Ben Haddou, Kelaat M'Gouna, Todra Gorge and the Middle Atlas cedar forests. Book camp nights, camel treks and gorge mini-guides direct or via GetYourGuide/Klook; the rest is DIY. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Marrakech → Tichka Pass → Telouet → Ait Ben Haddou → Skoura

Marrakech / Skoura

Leave Marrakech early (be at the shared-van pickup or the Supratours/CTM bus stand by 07:30). Climb the High Atlas over the Tichka Pass, Morocco's highest paved road — sit on the left for the best valley views. Break at the roadside argan oil cooperative (free entry, small tasting) and detour to Kasbah Telouet, the crumbling Glaoui palace, where a local guide will offer a 30–45 min tour for around 80–150 MAD. Continue to Ait Ben Haddou: the UNESCO ksar needs no ticket to walk the lanes but the granary viewpoint entry is ~20 MAD; guides at the gate ask ~200 MAD so agree the price first. Late afternoon, take the onward shared van/minibus south-east through Ouarzazate to Skoura, checking into a simple palm-oasis guesthouse (the operator's own Auberge Chez Talout and similar rural auberges are bookable direct or on Booking.com). Dinner at the guesthouse — tagine and bread, ~60–90 MAD.

🚌Shared minibus/grand taxi Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Skoura (~£14–18 total); CTM/Supratours bus alternative Marrakech–Ouarzazate ~£7

Day 2

Skoura → Kelaat M'Gouna → Todra Gorge → Merzouga dunes & desert camp

Skoura / Todra Gorge / Merzouga

Set off along the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to Kelaat M'Gouna, the rose-oil capital — the roadside distilleries give free short tours and sell rose water for 30–60 MAD. Continue to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where you can walk the canyon floor for free or pay a local climber/guide ~150–200 MAD for a 1-hour mini-trek. Grab a Berber pizza (medfouna) lunch in a village en route, ~50–70 MAD. In the afternoon a desert-camp shuttle or grand taxi drops you at Merzouga, where the camp's 4x4 meets you at the edge of Erg Chebbi. Ride a camel ~1 hour into the dunes at sunset, then check into a standard desert camp tent (the Sahara Star Camp-tier options run ~£30–45 per person including dinner and breakfast when booked direct or via GetYourGuide/Klook). Dinner, campfire drumming and Saharan music are normally part of the camp package; climb a dune for the stars and bring a headtorch.

🚌Shared desert shuttle/grand taxi Skoura → Kelaat M'Gouna → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (~£18–25); camel trek in/out included with camp package

Day 3

Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Middle Atlas → Fes

Merzouga / Fes

Catch sunrise on the big dune before breakfast, then camel or 4x4 back to Merzouga village by 08:00. Head north via Erfoud (fossil workshops worth a 15-min stop) and the dramatic Ziz Gorges and palm valley. Take the CTM or Supratours bus (or a shared grand taxi on the first leg to Er-Rachidia/Rissani, then bus) through rich mining country to Midelt for a lunch stop, ~60–80 MAD. The afternoon rolls through the Middle Atlas cedar forests and Azrou, where you can hop off briefly to spot Barbary macaques at the roadside, then Ifrane's alpine-style streets before arriving in Fes late afternoon. Check into a Fes medina riad or hostel; an evening wander to Bab Boujeloud and a cheap harira/grilled-meat dinner fits the budget.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Marrakech to Fes Desert Circuit: Atlas Kasbahs, Todra Gorge & a Sahara Night cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £202 per person for 3 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Morhara Morocco Tours?+

Yes — Morhara Morocco Tours charges around £550 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £202 — a saving of roughly £348 (63%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, road-trip trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
