A DIY version of Blue Turbans Adventures' 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga loop, built on Morocco's excellent shared grand-taxi and CTM/Supratours bus network plus a direct-booked desert camp. You'll cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, explore the UNESCO ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, sleep in the Dades Valley, walk the Todra Gorge, camel-trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a night under the stars, and roll back to Marrakech through the Draa Valley and Anti-Atlas. Doing it yourself cuts the group-tour markup while keeping the same route and highlights — the trade-off is more planning and slightly longer road days, so break the return leg if you have a spare night in Ouarzazate. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget rates in GBP and assume shared doubles or hostel dorms.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley

Marrakech / Ouarzazate / Dades Valley

Start early. Catch the 07:00–08:00 CTM or Supratours bus from Marrakech's Gare Routière to Ouarzazate (~6–7 hrs, ~£10–13, book online a day or two ahead; the route crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass with photo stops at Berber village viewpoints). Alternatively, negotiate a shared grand taxi or minivan seat from Bab Doukkala for ~£15–18 per person — faster but less comfortable. In Ouarzazate, drop your bag at a cheap riad near the kasbah or ask a local taxi driver for a 2–3 hour round trip to Ait Ben Haddou (~£12–15 per vehicle, split between travellers) — entry to the ksar is ~£2 and a short local guide at the gate is ~£5–8. If time allows, stop at Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate (~£1.50). Continue late afternoon by shared grand taxi (Ouarzazate ↔ Boumalne Dades, ~£5–6 per seat) and take a local taxi up to the Dades Gorge viewpoints (~£8 round trip, split). Sleep in a budget guesthouse in Boumalne Dades or Aït Ouffi village — expect ~£15–20 for a simple double with breakfast.

🚌CTM/Supratours bus Marrakech–Ouarzazate ~£10–13; shared grand taxi Ouarzazate–Boumalne Dades ~£6; local taxi to Dades Gorge viewpoints ~£8 split

🛏Budget guesthouse in Boumalne Dades or Aït Ouffi (~£15–20 per double, breakfast included)

  • →Taourirt Kasbah, Ouarzazate
  • →Optional: Kasbah Amridil at Skoura (~£2)
  • →Evening at Dades Gorge viewpoints

Day 2

Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga dunes

Todra Gorge / Merzouga / Erg Chebbi

Walk the Dades Gorge in the cool of the morning (free, or ~£5 for a guide to the 'monkey fingers' rock formations). Take a shared grand taxi or local bus via Tinghir to Todra Gorge (~£4–6, 1.5 hrs) and give yourself 1–2 hours to hike the canyon floor and have a tagine lunch (~£4–5). From Tinghir, continue by shared taxi or Supratours minibus to Rissani/Merzouga (~£7–9, 2.5–3 hrs) — ask your camp for exact pickup points, since camps will usually collect you from Merzouga village for free. Book a standard desert camp direct (WhatsApp/Booking.com/GetYourGuide, ~£30–40 per person including camel trek, dinner, breakfast, drum music and sandboarding) rather than a 'luxury VIP' camp. Ride camels (~1.5 hrs) into Erg Chebbi for sunset, then dune-walk, sandboard and eat a Berber tagine dinner around the fire. Tip the camp crew ~£3–5.

🚌Shared grand taxi to Tinghir ~£5; Tinghir–Merzouga shared taxi/minibus ~£8; camp camel trek and 4x4 transfer included in camp price

Day 3

Merzouga → Draa Valley → Marrakech

Merzouga / Rissani / Agdz / Ouarzazate / Marrakech

Wake for sunrise on the dunes, camel or 4x4 back to Merzouga village, breakfast, then start the long ride west. The direct Merzouga–Marrakech CTM/Supratours coach (~10–11 hrs, ~£15–18) leaves around 08:00–09:00 and is the cheapest, safest option — book the day before online or at the Merzouga/Rissani agency. If you prefer to break the drive and see the Draa Valley properly, take a shared taxi Merzouga → Rissani → Alnif → Tazzarine → Agdz (~£10–12 total), stop for lunch and a cheap riad in Agdz (~£12–15) and walk to Tamnougalte Kasbah (~£2), then continue the next morning over the Tizi n'Tinfifite pass and Anti-Atlas into Ouarzazate (~£6) and on to Marrakech by bus (~£7). Back in Marrakech by 18:00–20:00 on the direct coach option.

🚌CTM/Supratours coach Merzouga–Marrakech ~£15–18 (~10–11 hrs); or shared taxis via Rissani/Alnif/Agdz/Ouarzazate ~£20–25 plus one bus leg

🛏Overnight in own riad/hostel in Marrakech, or a budget guesthouse in Agdz if splitting the drive (~£12–15)

  • →Sunrise on Erg Chebbi
  • →Draa Valley and palmeries
  • →Tamnougalte Kasbah near Agdz
  • →Tizi n'Tinfifite pass and Anti-Atlas scenery

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Marrakech to Merzouga Sahara Circuit cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £152 per person for 3 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Blue Turbans Adventures?+

Yes — Blue Turbans Adventures charges around £565 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £152 — a saving of roughly £413 (73%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
