A self-launched version of Much Better Adventures' 5-night Moroccan loop — Marrakech medina, the Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, the Draa and Dades Valleys, Todra Gorge and a sunset camel trek to a Berber camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes. Instead of a guided 4x4 tour, you'll travel by CTM/SUPRATOUR coach and shared grand taxi, sleep in budget riads, family-run guesthouses and a desert camp, and book your camel trek locally in Merzouga. Costs are approximate per person and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Marrakech — medina and Jemaa el-Fnaa

Marrakech

Fly into Menara Airport (RAK) and take the public bus (No. 19, ~MAD30/£2.50) or a petit taxi (~MAD70-100/£6-8, agree the price first) into the medina. Check into a budget riad or hostel in the old town. Spend the afternoon getting lost in the souks, then walk to the UNESCO-listed Jemaa el-Fnaa square at dusk — snake charmers, storytellers and food stalls. Dinner of tagine or a bowl of harira for £4-6.

🚌Airport bus No. 19 or petit taxi from RAK to the medina (~£2.50-8)

🛏Budget riad or hostel dorm/private room in the Marrakech medina (~£15-25)

Day 2

Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou over the Tizi n'Tichka

Ait Ben Haddou

Take a morning CTM or SUPRATOUR coach from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (~6-7hrs, £10-14), crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260m. Alternatively, a shared grand taxi covers the same route if you can fill seats. From Ouarzazate take a shared grand taxi or local minibus ~30km to Ait Ben Haddou (~30-45 mins, £2-4). Check into a family-run guesthouse, then walk up to the ksar at golden hour — the fortified clay village used in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Dinner and sunset views over the palmeraie.

🚌CTM/SUPRATOUR coach Marrakech-Ouarzazate (~£10-14) + shared grand taxi Ouarzazate-Ait Ben Haddou (~£2-4)

  • →Sunset over the palmeraie
  • →Optional local kasbah walk
~£48
Day 3

Draa Valley kasbahs and camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes

Merzouga

Start early with a shared taxi or minibus to Ouarzazate, then continue east toward Merzouga via the Draa River Valley — a long travel day (~6-7hrs total) past kasbahs, oases and date palms. Buses on this eastern route are limited, so booking a seat on a shared tourist minibus or splitting a private grand taxi with other travellers is the realistic option. Arrive in Merzouga by mid-afternoon and arrange your sunset camel trek directly with a local camp (book via GetYourGuide or on arrival; ~£25-40 including dinner and a night in a Berber tent). The ~1.5hr camel ride ends at an Erg Chebbi camp for mint tea, dinner around the fire, drumming and a night under the stars.

🚌Shared taxi/minibus Ouarzazate-Merzouga via Draa Valley (~£15-25), or split a private grand taxi

🛏Berber desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes — carpeted tent with beds or blankets under the stars (~£25-40 inc. camel trek, dinner & breakfast)

  • →Sunset camel trek in Erg Chebbi
  • →Mint tea and dinner around the campfire
  • →Stargazing in the Sahara

Day 4

Sunrise in the dunes, Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley

Dades Valley

Wake for sunrise over the dunes, then ride or walk back to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower. Take a shared taxi or minibus north to Tinghir (~2hrs, £4-6), where you can hike into Todra Gorge — sheer 160m canyon walls and shallow river, free to explore on foot. Continue to the Dades Valley, known as the 'Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs', and check into a local guesthouse in or near Boumalne Dades. If time allows, walk the Dades Gorge switchbacks or hire a local guide for a short hike among the rock formations.

Day 5

Marrakech

Travel back west through the Rose Valley and the green Skoura Oasis, stopping in Ouarzazate for lunch at a kasbah and a look at the Atlas Film Studios if you fancy. From Ouarzazate catch the CTM or SUPRATOUR coach back to Marrakech over the Atlas (~4-5hrs, £10-14) — book this leg in advance as seats sell out. Arrive in Marrakech in the evening and check back into your riad in the old town for a final night, with dinner in the medina or a rooftop terrace.

🚌Shared taxi Dades-Ouarzazate (~£3-5) + CTM/SUPRATOUR coach Ouarzazate-Marrakech (~£10-14)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Morocco: Kasbahs, Gorges & a Night in the Sahara cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £253 per person for 6 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £1,145 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £253 — a saving of roughly £892 (78%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, budget trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
