A self-launched version of Discover Morocco's 2-day Casablanca–Tangier–Chefchaouen loop, rebuilt around Morocco's excellent and cheap rail and bus network. You ride the ONCF train from Casablanca to Tangier (2h10 high-speed Al Boraq, then a short hop), explore Tangier's Kasbah and medina on foot plus the coast at Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules using the local 'Tingis' city bus or a shared grand taxi, overnight in a budget guesthouse, then take a CTM/local bus to the blue city of Chefchaouen for a full afternoon of wandering the medina and Rif viewpoints before heading back to Casablanca that evening. You lose the private minibus and the 4-star hotel, but you gain far more time in Chefchaouen, complete flexibility, and roughly a 60% saving.
Day-by-day
Casablanca → Tangier by train + Kasbah, medina & the coast
Tangier
Book an early Al Boraq high-speed train from Casablanca Voyageurs (or Casa Port) to Tangier Ville — roughly 2h10 and around £17–20 in second class if booked a few days ahead on oncf-voyages.ma. From Tangier Ville station it's a 15-minute walk or a £1 petit taxi into the medina. Drop your bag at a guesthouse in or beside the medina (Dar-style riad hostels and small guesthouses run £18–30 for a private room, £10–14 for a dorm bed). Spend the morning walking the Kasbah and its narrow streets on your own — the Kasbah Museum and the Café Hafa terraces are cheap and atmospheric. In the afternoon take the local city bus or a shared grand taxi out to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules (about 30–40 min each way, £2–4 return by bus; a shared taxi is £6–10). Skip any paid monument interiors you don't fancy — most medina wandering is free. Dinner: a tagine or grilled fish in the medina for £6–9.
🚌ONCF Al Boraq train Casablanca Voyageurs → Tangier Ville, ~2h10, ~£17–20 second class (book at oncf-voyages.ma). Petit taxi station → medina ~£1. Local bus to Cap Spartel/Caves of Hercules ~£2–4 return, or shared grand taxi ~£6–10.

Chefchaouen / Casablanca
Take an early CTM or local bus from Tangier to Chefchaouen (about 2h45–3h, £5–7 one way; book CTM online or buy at the station the day before). Arrive around 10:30–11:00 and spend the whole day in the blue city: wander the medina's blue-washed lanes, look into the Kasbah and its garden (£2–3), see the Great Mosque from outside (non-Muslim entry is not permitted), browse the pottery, weaving and djellaba souks, and walk up to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint for the classic panorama over the Rif (£0). Lunch of a cheap berber omelette or pastilla for £3–5. Aim to leave Chefchaouen mid/late afternoon — either a direct CTM bus back toward Casablanca (some services via Tangier or Fes, 5–6h) or, more reliably, a bus back to Tangier and the evening train to Casablanca Voyageurs (arriving late evening). Alternatively, skip the long return and stay a night in Chefchaouen's superb-value guesthouses (£15–25) before continuing the next morning.
🚌CTM bus Tangier → Chefchaouen ~2h45–3h, ~£5–7. Return: CTM bus Chefchaouen → Tangier ~£5–7 then ONCF train Tangier Ville → Casablanca ~2h10, ~£17–20 (or direct CTM bus to Casablanca, ~£12–15, 5–6h).

Frequently asked questions
How much does Tangier & Chefchaouen by Train — Self-Launched 2-Day Version cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £107 per person for 2 days in Morocco (Tangier & Chefchaouen). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Discover Morocco?+
Yes — Discover Morocco charges around £220 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £107 — a saving of roughly £113 (51%) per person.
How long is the Morocco (Tangier & Chefchaouen) trip?+
This itinerary runs 2 days, covering 2 day-by-day stops through Morocco (Tangier & Chefchaouen).
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a culture, city-breaks, budget trip through Morocco (Tangier & Chefchaouen), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
