The 3 Peaks Challenge in Morocco – Self-Launched

5 days · Morocco

Much Better Adventures charges £895

£645saved per person (72%)

No-markup version: ~£250 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

Tackle the same three 4000m+ summits of the High Atlas — Toubkal (4167m), Timzguida (4089m) and Ras (4083m) — entirely on your own terms. This self-launched version swaps the group tour fee for independent booking of local Berber guides, refuges and shared transport from Imlil, saving you several hundred pounds while keeping all the core experiences intact. You'll stay in a budget riad in Marrakech's medina and bunk in the same Mouflons refuge on the mountain. All costs are approximate estimates per person.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Marrakech – Explore the Medina

Marrakech

Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). Take a shared airport taxi or the 19 bus into the city centre (around £2–4) — avoid private taxis unless you agree the fare upfront (expect ~£5–8). Check into a budget riad or guesthouse in the medina. Spend the afternoon and evening exploring the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, wandering the souks and eating street food or a sit-down tajine. This is a great city to soak up before the mountains.

🚌Shared airport taxi or bus 19 from RAK to medina, ~£2–4. Walk everywhere in the medina.

🛏Budget riad or guesthouse in the medina — e.g. Riad Dar Zitoun or similar, bookable via Booking.com or Hostelworld. Expect £18–30/night for a twin/dorm room.

  • Explore Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the surrounding souks
  • Visit the Koutoubia Mosque gardens
  • Eat street food or dinner at a local medina restaurant — budget £5–8 for a generous meal
~£45
Day 2

Drive to Imlil – Ascend the Toubkal Valley

Imlil / Toubkal Valley / Mouflons Refuge (3207m)

Rise early and take a shared grand taxi from Bab Rob in Marrakech to Imlil village (~1.5hrs, £5–8pp). In Imlil, hire a licensed local Berber guide directly — guides are available at the village bureau and cost around £50–70/day for a private guide, or less if you join a small group. Negotiate mule porterage separately (£15–25/day per mule). Begin the trek up the Toubkal Valley, passing Berber farming villages and terraced fields. Lunch on trail food you've packed or buy from village stalls. Arrive at the Mouflons Refuge (3207m) in the afternoon. Check in for a bunk in the dorm (£10–15pp) and refuel with a refuge dinner (£6–10).

🚌Shared grand taxi Marrakech → Imlil, ~£5–8pp. Trek on foot from Imlil.

🛏Mouflons Refuge, 3207m — mixed bunk dorms, basic facilities. Book directly by email or via your guide. ~£10–15pp/night including breakfast.

  • Shared grand taxi from Marrakech (Bab Rob) to Imlil village (~£5–8pp)
  • Hire a licensed Berber guide at the Imlil bureau (£50–70/day split across your group)
  • Hire mule porterage for overnight bags (£15–25/day)
  • Trek ~12km / 1540m ascent up the Toubkal Valley
  • Overnight at Mouflons Refuge at 3207m — book ahead via email or through your guide
~£80
Day 3

Summit the Twin Peaks of Mt Ouanoukrim

High Atlas – Mt Ouanoukrim (Timzguida 4089m & Ras 4083m)

An early start from the refuge to tackle the twin summits of Mt Ouanoukrim — the second and third highest peaks in North Africa. Your guide will lead you up the ridge via the Tizi n Ouagane pass, involving some light scrambling. From the top you'll have panoramic views across the entire High Atlas range including Toubkal. Return to the refuge for the night. Pack trail snacks and a packed lunch from the refuge. Total route: ~12km, 1000m up and 1000m down, allow 6–7 hours.

🚌On foot from refuge.

🛏Mouflons Refuge (second night) — same dorm bunk. Included in previous night's booking or £10–15pp.

  • Summit Timzguida (4089m) — the second highest peak in North Africa
  • Summit Ras (4083m) — the third highest peak in North Africa
  • Ridge traverse via Tizi n Ouagane pass with light scrambling
  • Return to Mouflons Refuge for dinner and rest
~£35
Day 4

Summit Mt Toubkal (4167m) – Return to Marrakech

Mt Toubkal (4167m) / Imlil / Marrakech

The big one. Leave the refuge before dawn (headtorch essential) to climb Toubkal (4167m) — the highest peak in North Africa — in time for sunrise over the Atlas and the Sahara. The route is steep scree and rocky terrain; trekking poles are highly recommended. After photos at the summit, begin the long descent (~2530m down) back to Imlil, arriving mid-to-late afternoon. From Imlil, take a shared grand taxi back to Marrakech (~£5–8pp). Check back into your riad and find a couscous or tajine dinner — you've earned it.

🚌On foot (summit and descent). Shared grand taxi Imlil → Marrakech, ~£5–8pp.

🛏Budget riad or guesthouse in Marrakech medina — same as night 1, or rebook. ~£18–30/night.

  • Pre-dawn summit bid on Mt Toubkal (4167m) — highest peak in North Africa
  • Watch sunrise over the High Atlas and Sahara Desert from the summit
  • Long descent back to Imlil village (~2530m descent)
  • Shared grand taxi from Imlil back to Marrakech (~£5–8pp)
  • Celebratory dinner in the medina
~£70
Day 5

Final Morning in Marrakech – Depart

Marrakech

Enjoy a leisurely Moroccan breakfast at your riad — coffee, msemen flatbreads, amlou (argan oil and almond paste) and fresh orange juice. If your flight is in the afternoon, use the morning for a final wander through the souks, visit the Bahia Palace (entry ~£2) or browse leather goods in the tannery quarter. Make your own way to the airport — shared taxi or bus 19 (~£2–4). Remember: Marrakech airport does not accept mobile boarding passes, so print yours in advance.

🚌Bus 19 or shared taxi to RAK airport, ~£2–4pp.

🛏Check out of riad.

  • Moroccan breakfast at your riad
  • Optional: visit Bahia Palace (~£2 entry) or browse the souks for souvenirs
  • Make your own way to Marrakech Menara Airport — bus 19 or shared taxi (~£2–4)

Frequently asked questions

How much does The 3 Peaks Challenge in Morocco – Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £250 per person for 5 days in Morocco. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £895 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £250 — a saving of roughly £645 (72%) per person.

How long is the Morocco trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Morocco.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, culture trip through Morocco, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
