Nepal & Bhutan Explorer — Self-Launched
13 days · Nepal & Bhutan
G Adventures charges £2,322
No-markup version: ~£1,785 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A 13-day self-launched version of G Adventures' Kathmandu-to-Paro loop: Kathmandu's temples and momos, lakeside Pokhara, a Tharu community guesthouse and jeep safari in Chitwan, then Druk Air over the Himalayas into Bhutan for Thimphu, Punakha and the Tiger's Nest hike. Doable independently — the one catch is Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee (US$100/day), which is non-negotiable but cheaper than a packaged tour. Book your own licensed Bhutanese guide and driver locally (required by regulation, ~US$40-60/day split between a couple) and you'll pay a fraction of the operator's price. All costs are approximate backpacker/budget rates in GBP.
Day-by-day
Arrive Kathmandu & sunset at Patan Durbar Square
Kathmandu
Land at Tribhuvan International and grab a pre-paid taxi (~NPR 800-1,000 / £5-6) to a Thamel hostel. Sort your Nepal e-Visa online before flying (US$30 for 15 days, ~£24) to skip the airport queue. In the late afternoon walk or take a £2 taxi to Patan Durbar Square (entry NPR 1,000 / £6) for the Newari pagodas and golden temples as the light fades — you can wander this at your own pace far better than a group walk.
🚌Airport taxi ~£5-6; local taxi to Patan ~£2
🛏Hostel private twin or budget guesthouse, Thamel (~£14/night)
- →Patan Durbar Square (NPR 1,000)

Entry NPR 1,800 (£11). Then back toward Kathmandu for Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple, NPR 200 / £1.20) and the long stair climb for valley views. Later, book a momo-making session through GetYourGuide or with a Thamel cooking school (~£18-22) — the same 'G for Good' style experience of learning from local women, without the group markup.

The bus is scenic and cheap — sit on the left for river views. On arrival, walk the 20 minutes down to Phewa Lake for the sunset over the Annapurnas and pick up a lakeside dal bhat (NPR 350 / £2).

Alternatively a guided jungle walk with two licensed naturalists (~£20) is a quieter, wetter-grass alternative. Afternoon free: birdwatching along the Rapti River at dusk is one of the best free activities in Nepal.

Fly Kathmandu to Paro, transfer to Thimphu
Thimphu
Today's the big one: the Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Paro (~£185-230 booked direct on drukair.com.bt — book 4-8 weeks out) is one of the world's great approaches, skimming Himalayan peaks. You'll need your Bhutan visa (US$40, applied via the official Department of Immigration portal with a licensed tour operator's sponsorship) and the Sustainable Development Fee paid up front (US$100/day = ~£79/day, count 6 days = ~£470). A licensed guide and driver are mandatory — hire direct via a local Bhutanese operator (~US$50-70/day total for guide + vehicle, split two ways ~£25/person/day). Descend into the subtropics for the 30-minute flat walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple of the 'Divine Madman' (free). Afternoon at Punakha Dzong at the river confluence (BTN 500 / £4.50), Bhutan's most photogenic fortress. Stay in a Punakha Valley guesthouse — cheaper than Thimphu and with better views.

Paro
Start early (7-7.30am) for the 7km round-trip hike to Taktsang, ~900m of gain, 4-5 hours with stops. Take it slow at 3,000m — the cafe halfway is the classic turnaround point for anyone struggling. Entry BTN 1,000 (£9). Your guide's commentary on the 13 holy relics and the Guru Rinpoche legend is the value-add here. Back down by early afternoon for a late lunch; the rest of the day is yours for a hot-stone bath (traditional Bhutanese dotsho, ~£15) and a final dinner.

Paro

Frequently asked questions
How much does Nepal & Bhutan Explorer — Self-Launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,785 per person for 13 days in Nepal & Bhutan. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,322 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,785 — a saving of roughly £537 (23%) per person.
How long is the Nepal & Bhutan trip?+
This itinerary runs 13 days, covering 13 day-by-day stops through Nepal & Bhutan.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, culture, hiking trip through Nepal & Bhutan, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
