Peregrine Treks and Expedition Pvt Ltd charges £900
No-markup version: ~£330 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of Peregrine Treks' 7-day Gosaikunda Lake trek: independent buses to Dhunche, tea-house trekking through Sing Gompa to the sacred 4,380m lake, and local buses back to Kathmandu. You'll arrange a TIMS card and Langtang National Park permit yourself, walk without a group, and sleep in teahouses — same mountains (Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu), a fraction of the operator price. Costs are rough backpacker estimates and exclude international flights.
Day-by-day
Arrival in Kathmandu
Kathmandu
Land at Tribhuvan International Airport, pick up a local SIM/eSIM (Ncell or NTC, ~£2-5 for data), and take a pre-paid airport taxi to Thamel (~NPR 700-1,000 / £4-6). Settle into a Thamel hostel or guesthouse. Afternoon: sort your trek admin — visit the Nepal Tourism Board office (Bhrikutimandu) or an agent in Thamel for a TIMS card (~NPR 2,000 / £12) and the Langtang National Park entry permit (~NPR 3,000 / £18). Buy or hire gear, grab a dal bhat, and confirm tomorrow's bus departure with your guesthouse.

Kathmandu to Dhunche by local bus
Dhunche
Take a morning local or 'tourist' bus from Kathmandu's Machhapokhari bus park to Dhunche (approx. 6-7 hours, NPR 700-900 / £4-6). The road climbs through Trishuli and Rasuwa with views of Langtang Himal opening up. Alternatively, share a jeep with other trekkers for speed (~NPR 1,500-2,000). Check in at a Dhunche teahouse, eat an early dinner and get an early night — altitude starts here at 1,950m.

- →Scenic bus ride with Langtang Himal views
- →Overnight acclimatisation in Dhunche
Dhunche to Chandanwari via Sing Gompa
Chandanwari
Start walking early: the trail climbs steadily from Dhunche up to Deurali, then continues through forest to Sing Gompa (3,250m) — home to a small monastery and the well-known Yak cheese factory. Buy some cheese for the trail. Push on another ~1.5-2 hours to Chandanwari (3,330m) for the night to shorten tomorrow. Bring water purification (tablets/filter) as bottled water gets expensive higher up.
🚌On foot
🛏Teahouse in Chandanwari
- →Trek Dhunche–Deurali–Sing Gompa–Chandanwari (~5-6 hrs)
- →Visit Sing Gompa monastery
- →Yak cheese factory at Chandanwari
Chandanwari to Gosaikunda Lake (4,380m)
Gosaikunda
The big day: a steep climb through Cholangpati and Lauribinayak with the treeline falling away, then a high traverse past the 108 sacred lakes to Gosaikunda (4,380m). Views of Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal and, on a clear day, Manaslu. Walk slowly, hydrate and watch for headache. Drop your bag, then circle the lake shore and optionally take a (very cold) dip in the holy water believed to wash away sins. Sunset from the ridge above the lake is the highlight.
🚌On foot
🛏Teahouse at Gosaikunda
- →Trek Chandanwari–Cholangpati–Lauribinayak–Gosaikunda (~5-6 hrs)
- →Explore the 108 lakes area

Gosaikunda to Dhunche
Dhunche
Descend the way you came (or, if you've got more time and a guidebook, continue over Lauribinayak towards Thulo Syabru — but the standard 7-day loop heads back). Retrace via Lauribinayak, Cholangpati and Sing Gompa to Dhunche. Long day, ~7-8 hours, mostly downhill on tired legs. Hot shower, momos and a cold beer back in Dhunche.
🚌On foot
🛏Teahouse/guesthouse in Dhunche
- →Trek Gosaikunda–Sing Gompa–Dhunche (~7-8 hrs)

- →Optional evening visit to Boudhanath stupa

Frequently asked questions
How much does Gosaikunda Lake Trek — Self-Launched (7 Days from Kathmandu) cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £330 per person for 7 days in Nepal (Kathmandu & Langtang / Gosaikunda). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Peregrine Treks and Expedition Pvt Ltd?+
Yes — Peregrine Treks and Expedition Pvt Ltd charges around £900 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £330 — a saving of roughly £570 (63%) per person.
How long is the Nepal (Kathmandu & Langtang / Gosaikunda) trip?+
This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Nepal (Kathmandu & Langtang / Gosaikunda).
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, hiking, budget trip through Nepal (Kathmandu & Langtang / Gosaikunda), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
