Wrap up with a meal of dal bhat or momos on a rooftop, and introduce yourself to the vibe of backpacker Kathmandu.

Return to Ghorepani for breakfast, then descend steeply through rhododendron forest towards Deurali Pass, cross a stream and climb to Tadapani. A demanding day of stone steps and undulating trail through dense jungle alongside a wild river — the longest sustained climb is roughly 45 minutes. Pass through Bamboo and its string of cosy teahouses, take a well-earned break, then continue through the forest to the aptly named village of Himalaya. Once you're above Bamboo the scenery closes in and feels increasingly remote.

To Machapuchare Base Camp

Pass Deurali, follow the glacial river through birch forest flanked by snowy ridges, then break above the treeline to reach Machapuchare Base Camp (~3700m). Sink into spectacular views of Hiunchuli, Gandharbachuil, Gangapurna and the Annapurna Massif — and thousands of stars after dark. Keep the pace slow, drink plenty of water and watch for altitude symptoms.

Annapurna Base Camp
Annapurna Base Camp
The highlight of the trek. A steady 3-hour climb above the treeline on snow-dusted rocky terrain brings you to Annapurna Base Camp at 4130m. The trail isn't steep but altitude makes it feel harder — take it slow. The panorama of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Gangapurna and Machapuchare is unforgettable, and if conditions allow, stay for a magical sunset. Spend the night at ABC to maximise your time at the summit of the route.

- →Trek MBC to Annapurna Base Camp (3hrs, 4km, 430m ascent)

Bamboo
Rise early for the famous ABC sunrise as Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Annapurna South, Gangapurna, Hiunchuli and Machapuchare glow in the morning light. Then it's a long, steady downhill day — 1860m of descent through forested slopes — retracing the valley back to Bamboo for the night. Take care on the steps; poles help tremendously on these big descent days.

🛏Teahouse, multi-share (~£5-8)
- →ABC sunrise viewpoint
- →Trek ABC to Bamboo (7-8hrs, 18km descent)
Last night in the mountains — Jhinu hot springs

Wildlife encounters in Chitwan
Chitwan National Park (Sauraha)
A full day of wildlife exploration. Start at the Gharial Crocodile Breeding Centre (established 1971), then board a dugout canoe for a leisurely cruise along the Rapti River — your best chance to spot aquatic birds, gharials and riverbank wildlife. After lunch, head out on a jeep or walking safari (book locally through your lodge or a recognised operator) deep into the jungle, eyes peeled for bison, deer and the one-horned rhino. Most lodges sell a 2-3 day Chitwan package including canoe, jungle walk, jeep safari, meals and guide, which often works out cheaper than paying per activity.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Annapurna Sanctuary Trek & Chitwan Safari cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,180 per person for 16 days in Nepal. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+
Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £2,095 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,180 — a saving of roughly £915 (44%) per person.
How long is the Nepal trip?+
This itinerary runs 16 days, covering 16 day-by-day stops through Nepal.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, hiking, culture trip through Nepal, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
