A self-launched version of the classic 3-day Ghorepani–Poon Hill loop from Pokhara: ride a shared jeep to Ghandruk, trek through rhododendron and oak forest to Tadapani and Ghorepani, then climb Poon Hill (3,210m) for sunrise over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri before descending through Ulleri and catching a shared jeep back to Pokhara. No group, no fixed departure — just the trail, tea houses and your own pace. Book ACAP permit and TIMS card yourself, pick up meals and lodges on the trail, and walk the identical route for around a fifth of the guided tour price.
Day-by-day
Pokhara → Ghandruk → Tadapani
Ghandruk & Tadapani
Early start from Lakeside Pokhara — shared jeeps to Ghandruk (approx. 2.5–3 hrs, leave around 7am; the seasonal road via Nayapul can be slow in monsoon, when you may need a car to Nayapul then jeep to Kimche). Wander the stone lanes of Ghandruk for an hour, take in the Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre views and the Gurung museum, then walk the forest trail to Tadapani in about 4 hours through jungle, rhododendron and small ridgeside teahouses. Sleep at a basic teahouse in Tadapani (twin rooms, shared bathroom, dal bhat or thukpa for dinner). Buy your ACAP permit and TIMS card in Pokhara the day before via Nepal Tourism Board (approx. £25 combined).
🚌Shared jeep Pokhara–Ghandruk approx. £13 per person (or hire a seat locally from Lakeside jeep stand)
🛏Teahouse, Tadapani (basic twin, shared bathroom) — approx. £7
- →Ghandruk village walk and Gurung museum

- →Sunset views of Annapurna South
Tadapani → Ghorepani
Ghorepani
A gentler day: 4–5 hours on a well-marked trail through Deurali and Banthanti, crossing streams and rhododendron forest, arriving at Ghorepani (2,860m) by early afternoon. Teahouses here mostly have hot water in attached bathrooms. Eat a hearty dal bhat, charge your phone for a small fee and get an early night before the dawn climb. Buy snacks and water from village shops as you go — prices rise with altitude.
🚌On foot
🛏Teahouse, Ghorepani (twin with hot shower) — approx. £7
- →Trek Tadapani–Ghorepani, ~4–5 hrs
- →Rhododendron and jungle forest walk

Poon Hill & Pokhara
Headtorch on, leave Ghorepani around 4:30am and climb the stone steps to Poon Hill (3,210m) in about 45–60 minutes for sunrise over Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and Machhapuchhre. Queue for the viewing tower, then descend back to Ghorepani for breakfast and continue down the long staircases through Banthanti, Ulleri and Tikhedunga to Nayapul, or shortcut from Banthanti by shared jeep (about £10–12) to save your knees. Buses and shared jeeps run from Nayapul/Birethanti to Pokhara for around £4–6, dropping you at Lakeside in the late afternoon.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Poon Hill Trek from Pokhara (3 Days) cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £205 per person for 3 days in Nepal. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Peregrine Treks and Expedition Pvt Ltd?+
Yes — Peregrine Treks and Expedition Pvt Ltd charges around £616 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £205 — a saving of roughly £411 (67%) per person.
How long is the Nepal trip?+
This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Nepal.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, hiking, backpacker trip through Nepal, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
