9 days · New Zealand North Island
Gap 360 charges £1,299
No-markup version: ~£685 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
Skip the £1,299 Gap 360 group tour and do the same iconic North Island route independently — Hobbiton, Waitomo, Rotorua, Taupo, and Wellington — for a fraction of the cost. All the headline attractions are self-bookable via GetYourGuide or direct, transport is covered by InterCity coaches and the Overlander bus network, and the working-holiday admin (IRD number, Kiwi bank account, NZ SIM) is completely free to sort yourself. This itinerary covers the same 9-day sightseeing arc, then leaves you ready to find work on your own terms. Costs are estimated per person and are approximate.
Day-by-day
Arrive Auckland — Get Settled
Auckland
Fly into Auckland Airport and take the SkyBus express coach to the city centre (£14 one-way, runs every 10–15 mins, no need to pre-book a private transfer). Check into Base Backpackers or Haka House Auckland on Fort Street — both are social, central hostels popular with working-holiday makers. Pick up a free 2degrees or Skinny Mobile SIM from any Warehouse or supermarket (plans from ~£10/month). Spend the evening exploring Karangahape Road (K' Road) for cheap eats and drinks. A Māori-owned flat white at a local café is a great start.
🚌SkyBus from Auckland Airport to Britomart (~£14). Alternatively, the 380 public bus runs to Manukau then rail into the city for ~£4 but is slower with luggage.
🛏Base Backpackers Auckland or Haka House Auckland — dorm beds from ~£22/night
- →SkyBus from Auckland Airport to city centre (~£14)
- →Check in to Base Backpackers or Haka House Auckland
- →Pick up a prepay SIM card from The Warehouse or a supermarket (Skinny/2degrees from ~£10)

Hobbiton & Waitomo Glow-Worm Caves
Matamata / Waitomo / Rotorua
This is the biggest logistical day — both Hobbiton and Waitomo are off the main highway and require some planning without a group leader. The easiest self-guided approach is to book a combined day tour from Auckland or Hamilton that covers both sites, or to hire a car for 2–3 days (highly recommended for the Rotorua region). Hobbiton tours must be pre-booked directly at hobbitontours.com — adult tickets are £24. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves boat tour is bookable direct at waitomo.com for ~£26. After Waitomo, drive or take an InterCity coach (~£18) southeast to Rotorua (2 hrs). Have a drink at the Green Dragon Inn at Hobbiton — it's included in the tour ticket. Check into Haka House Rotorua or YHA Rotorua.
🚌Hire car recommended for flexibility (from ~£35/day split between travellers). Alternatively, InterCity coaches connect Auckland–Matamata–Rotorua; use the online pass for savings. A dedicated day-tour from Auckland covering both sites is available on GetYourGuide from ~£95 (all transport and entry included) — convenient if you don't want to drive.
🛏Haka House Rotorua or YHA Rotorua — dorm beds from ~£20/night
- →Hobbiton Movie Set Tour — pre-book at hobbitontours.com (~£24/person, includes Green Dragon Inn drink)
- →Waitomo Glowworm Caves boat tour — pre-book at waitomo.com (~£26/person)
- →Drive or InterCity coach to Rotorua (~2 hrs, coach ~£18)
Rotorua — Geothermal Wonders
Rotorua
Rotorua smells of sulphur and it's brilliant. Start the morning at Kerosene Creek, a free natural hot spring about 30 minutes south of Rotorua on SH5 — bring a towel, it's a hidden gem and costs nothing. In the afternoon, head to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland for the Lady Knox Geyser eruption (10:15am daily), Champagne Pool, and vivid mud pools. Entry is ~£21 direct. The town centre has plenty of cheap eats — try Pak'nSave supermarket for self-catered lunch or the night market on Thursdays.
🚌Hire car makes Kerosene Creek easy. Without a car, Wai-O-Tapu runs a shuttle from Rotorua i-SITE visitor centre (~£5 return). Kerosene Creek requires a car or taxi — split a taxi for ~£10 each way between a few people.
🛏Haka House Rotorua or YHA Rotorua — dorm beds from ~£20/night
- →Kerosene Creek natural hot spring — FREE, 30 mins south of Rotorua on SH5
