A do-it-yourself version of G Adventures' 7-day Hiking Northern Greece trip: summit Mt Olympus from Litochoro, hike between the clifftop monasteries of Meteora, and trek the Vikos Gorge and stone villages of Zagori. Instead of a private vehicle and group CEO, you use Greece's excellent KTEL intercity buses and trains, stay in family-run guesthouses and mountain refuges, and book a couple of local guides only where they genuinely add value (Vikos Gorge and the Olympus refuge are best done with local knowledge). Costs are rough backpacker/budget-traveller estimates in GBP, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Thessaloniki to Litochoro

Litochoro

Land in Thessaloniki and make your own way to the KTEL Makedonia bus station (X1 airport shuttle, ~£2) or the train station. Take a KTEL intercity bus or the train south to Litochoro/Katerini (train ~£15-18, 1-2.5 hrs; bus similar). Settle into a family-run guesthouse in Litochoro's old centre, buy any last-minute hiking supplies and check the weather forecast at the EOS (Greek Mountaineering Club) office. Eat a big taverna dinner early and pack a daypack for tomorrow — your main bag stays at the guesthouse.

🚌Airport shuttle X1 (~£2) + KTEL bus or train Thessaloniki to Litochoro (~£15-18)

🛏Family-run guesthouse in Litochoro old town (~£28-35/night double/twin share)

  • →Settle into Litochoro old town
  • →Visit EOS Litochoro mountaineering club for trail/refuge info
  • →Taverna dinner and packing
~£60
Day 2

Up the E4 to Spilios Agapitos Refuge

Mount Olympus

Take a local taxi or hitch a lift the ~6 km to Prionia trailhead (taxi ~£15-20, shareable), where the classic E4 path begins. Hike up through pine, beech and fir forest to the Spilios Agapitos Refuge (A, 2,100 m) — roughly 3-4 hours. Book your refuge bed and dinner in advance by phone/email in high season (typically ~£20-28 half-board). Eat with other hikers and get an early night for the summit push.

🚌Shared taxi Litochoro to Prionia (~£5-8 per person) + hiking

🛏Spilios Agapitos mountain refuge, dorm bed with half board (~£22-28)

  • →Hike the E4 trail from Prionia to Spilios Agapitos Refuge
  • →Sunset over the Thermaic Gulf from the refuge terrace
~£55
Day 3

Skala & Skolio summits, descend to Litochoro

Mount Olympus / Litochoro

Start before dawn with a headtorch. Ascend the zig-zags to Skala (2,866 m), traverse the Muses Plateau under the Throne of Zeus, and tag Skolio (2,911 m) — Greece's second-highest summit. This is a demanding 5-7 hour round trip with some scrambling and possible snow patches into June; a local guide from Litochoro is worth ~£60-90 if you're not a confident alpine hiker. Descend the E4 back to Litochoro and collapse into your guesthouse for a second night.

🚌Hiking; optional taxi back from Prionia (~£5-8 shared)

🛏Family-run guesthouse in Litochoro (~£28-35/night)

  • →Summit Skala (2,866 m)
  • →Cross the Muses Plateau / Throne of Zeus
  • →Summit Skolio (2,911 m)
  • →Descend the E4 to Litochoro
~£65
Day 4

Meteora monasteries hike, transfer to Zagori

Meteora / Zagori

Take a KTEL bus or train to Kalambaka (Litochoro/Katerini to Kalambaka ~£12-18, 2.5-4 hrs with a change). From Kalambaka, hike the old mule trails up to the Meteora pillars — the paths past the ruined Pantokrator and the hidden Ypapanti monastery to Varlaam and Great Meteoron are free to walk; monastery entry is ~£3 each. Catch an afternoon KTEL bus west toward Ioannina (2.5-3.5 hrs, ~£12-15), then a local bus or shared taxi to Monodendri or Dilofo in Zagori (~£5-8).

🚌KTEL bus/train to Kalambaka (~£15) + KTEL bus Kalambaka-Ioannina (~£13) + local bus/shared taxi to Zagori (~£6)

🛏Stone guesthouse in Monodendri or Dilofo, Zagori (~£25-35/night)

  • →Hike the old paths to Meteora's monasteries
  • →Visit Varlaam and Great Meteoron monasteries (~£3 entry each)
  • →See Pantokrator ruins and Ypapanti hermitage
~£85
Day 5

Zagori stone villages and arched bridges hike

Zagori

A self-guided day on the well-marked Zagori trails: walk from Monodendri to the Oxya viewpoint, then follow cobbled kalderimia paths and arched stone bridges through Kapesovo, Vradeto and the famous Vradeto Steps (Skala tou Vradetou) down to Kipoi, linking multiple villages on foot. Buses between villages are sparse, so plan a loop or use a local taxi (~£10-15) for one leg. Dinner at a village taverna — ask your host about foraged mushroom and pita dishes.

🚌Walking; optional local taxi between villages (~£10-15)

🛏Stone guesthouse in Monodendri or Kipoi, Zagori (~£25-35/night)

  • →Hike the Oxya viewpoint trail
  • →Walk the Vradeto Steps and old kalderimia paths
  • →Cross the arched bridges of Kipoi
  • →Village taverna dinner
~£45
Day 6

Vikos Gorge full traverse

Vikos Gorge

The highlight: traverse the Vikos Gorge from Monodendri down to Vikos village or Papigo (~5-6 hrs, 12 km, steep limestone scree at the start). It's doable independently but navigation at the gorge floor is fiddly — a local guide from Monodendri costs ~£45-70 and is good value for a solo hiker; otherwise download the GPX and start early. Taxi back from Vikos/Papigo to Monodendri (~£15-20). Finish with a long dinner at a taverna known for locally foraged ingredients.

🚌Walking; return taxi from Vikos/Papigo (~£15-20)

🛏Stone guesthouse in Monodendri or Papigo, Zagori (~£25-35/night)

  • →Full traverse of the Vikos Gorge
  • →Vikos-Aoos National Park viewpoints
  • →Foraged-ingredient farewell dinner
~£60
Day 7

Zagori to Igoumenitsa or Preveza

Igoumenitsa / Preveza

Take the morning KTEL bus from Zagori/Ioannina down to Igoumenitsa (~1.5 hrs, ~£7) for the Corfu ferry (Minoan/Grimaldi/ANES, ~£8-12) — or continue by bus to Preveza/Aktion Airport (Ioannina to Preveza ~1.5-2 hrs, ~£8-10). If you've got time, the Acheron springs near Parga are an easy detour. Aim for flights departing after 16:00, as on the original itinerary.

🚌KTEL bus Zagori/Ioannina to Igoumenitsa (~£7) or Preveza (~£9); optional ferry to Corfu (~£10)

🛏—

  • →Scenic bus through the Pindus foothills
  • →Optional stop at the Acheron springs
~£30

Frequently asked questions

How much does Hiking Northern Greece, Self-Launched: Mt Olympus, Meteora & Vikos Gorge cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £700 per person for 7 days in Northern Greece. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,560 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £700 — a saving of roughly £860 (55%) per person.

How long is the Northern Greece trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Northern Greece.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, culture trip through Northern Greece, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
