5 Days Classic Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Tarangire — Self-Launched

5 days · Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire)

Gilmag Safaris charges £1,450

£830saved per person (57%)

No-markup version: ~£620 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Gilmag Safaris' 5-day northern circuit safari. Instead of a private guided vehicle for the whole trip, you build the same loop yourself: base in Arusha, join small-group or shared game drives to Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, and use public/shared transport for the Arusha–Karatu leg. You keep the iconic experiences — tree-climbing lions at Manyara, a full day in the Serengeti, the crater floor's black rhinos, Tarangire's elephants — while staying in budget lodges, tented camps and guesthouses instead of mid-range safari lodges. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget rates in GBP and assume shared costs where possible; sharing a 4x4 with other travellers cuts the biggest expense dramatically.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park

Arusha → Lake Manyara / Mto wa Mbu

Start early in Arusha. Take a shared shuttle or dalla-dalla from Arusha bus stand to Mto wa Mbu (~2.5 hrs, TZS 10,000-15,000 / ~£4-5), the gateway town to Lake Manyara. Dump your bag at a budget guesthouse, then book a half-day game drive into Lake Manyara National Park through your guesthouse or a local operator in town (park entry is ~US$60/pp plus vehicle + guide — cheaper if shared). Expect elephants, giraffes, hippos, flamingos along the lake shore, baboons and the park's famous tree-climbing lions. Sunset back in Mto wa Mbu; eat at a local restaurant or join a village cooking session.

🚌Shared shuttle/dalla-dalla Arusha → Mto wa Mbu ~£5; shared game-drive vehicle in park

🛏Budget guesthouse in Mto wa Mbu (e.g. simple en-suite room, £12-18)

  • →Shared game drive in Lake Manyara NP
  • →Wildlife spotting: elephants, giraffes, hippos, flamingos, tree-climbing lions
  • →Optional Mto wa Mbu village walk or banana-plantation tour (~£8)
~£110
Day 2

Ngorongoro Rim Viewpoints to the Serengeti

Mto wa Mbu → Ngorongoro rim → Serengeti (Seronera)

Long driving day. Arrange a shared safari vehicle seat heading to the Serengeti (many operators in Mto wa Mbu and Arusha sell 'seat-in-vehicle' transfers for this route, ~£45-70). The road climbs through Karatu to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area; stop at the rim viewpoints for the classic crater panorama, then continue across the highlands and down onto the plains into Serengeti National Park (park fees ~US$70-80/pp/day for non-residents — budget this carefully). Arrive Seronera area in the afternoon for your first game drive en route to camp.

🚌Seat-in-vehicle shared 4x4 transfer with game drive en route ~£55

🛏Public campsite or budget tented camp in Seronera / central Serengeti (£15-25)

  • →Ngorongoro Crater rim viewpoints
  • →Transit game drive into the Serengeti
  • →Wildlife spotting on the Seronera plains
~£165
Day 3

Full Day in the Serengeti

Serengeti National Park (Seronera)

A full day of game drives with your shared vehicle and guide — early start for predator activity, picnic lunch in the park, and an afternoon loop through the Seronera Valley and along the Grumeti/Rongai areas depending on the season (the migration moves north in the dry season, south in the wet season). Look for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, hippos and huge herds of wildebeest and zebra. Optional splurge: a sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti (book ahead via a balloon operator — US$550-650/pp, not included in this budget).

🚌Shared safari vehicle, full-day game drive (fuel/vehicle share ~£25)

🛏Public campsite or budget tented camp, Seronera (£15-25)

  • →Full-day Serengeti game drive with picnic lunch
  • →Optional Serengeti hot-air balloon flight (US$550-650, extra)
~£85
Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater Floor, then Karatu

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

Leave camp early and drive to the crater descent road. Descend onto the crater floor with your shared vehicle for 4-5 hours — this is the best single chance for endangered black rhino, plus lions, flamingos at Lake Magadi, gazelles, warthogs, hippos, zebras, hyenas and jackals. Picnic lunch at the Ngorongoro picnic site. Climb out and continue to Karatu, where you overnight; the crater descent and conservation fees are the priciest single item of the trip (~US$70-80 entry + US$300-ish vehicle/descent fee, shared between passengers).

🚌Shared 4x4, Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Karatu (~£35 with crater descent share)

🛏Budget guesthouse or lodge in Karatu (£18-28)

  • →Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive
  • →Black rhino, lion and flamingo spotting at Lake Magadi
  • →Picnic lunch in the crater
~£155
Day 5

Tarangire National Park to Arusha

Karatu → Tarangire NP → Arusha

Final morning: drive to Tarangire National Park (~2 hrs) for a half-day game drive with a picnic lunch above the Tarangire River. Tarangire is elephant country — big breeding herds, plus baobabs, lions, leopards, ostriches, warthogs, zebras, cheetahs and the occasional wild dog. Afterwards continue south and drop back into Arusha late afternoon (~2.5 hrs). If you'd rather cut costs, skip the extra park and take the public bus Karatu → Arusha (TZS 15,000-20,000 / ~£6-7) and spend the day in Arusha's cultural heritage centre and markets instead.

🚌Shared safari vehicle through Tarangire → Arusha ~£30; alternative public bus ~£7

🛏Budget hostel/guesthouse in Arusha (£12-20, or onward travel)

  • →Half-day game drive in Tarangire National Park
  • →Elephant herds along the Tarangire River
  • →Picnic lunch overlooking the river
~£105

Frequently asked questions

How much does 5 Days Classic Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Tarangire — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £620 per person for 5 days in Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Gilmag Safaris?+

Yes — Gilmag Safaris charges around £1,450 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £620 — a saving of roughly £830 (57%) per person.

How long is the Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
