Self-Launched Northern Tanzania Safari: Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater

4 days · Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro)

Kilimanjaro Wonders Expedition Safari charges £1,100

£400saved per person (36%)

No-markup version: ~£700 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of the classic 4-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater safari from Arusha. Instead of a private 4x4 with a full-service lodge package, you join a shared/public camping or budget-lodge safari group (bookable direct with any Arusha operator or via GetYourGuide), get yourself to Arusha by local bus or shuttle from Moshi/Kilimanjaro Airport, and sleep in simple tented camps or guesthouses instead of mid-range lodges. You'll still do the same game drives through Serengeti National Park and down into the Ngorongoro Crater floor — but at roughly half the group-tour price. Note that Tanzania parks require a licensed guide and vehicle, so the driving/navigating itself can't be fully DIY; the savings come from shared vehicles, tented-camp accommodation and self-arranged transfers. All costs are approximate backpacker/budget rates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arusha to Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Highlands

Arusha → Serengeti National Park

Get yourself to Arusha the night before (shuttle from Kilimanjaro Airport or Moshi costs about £10-15 with a shared shuttle/minibus; local buses are cheaper still). Your shared safari vehicle collects you early, around 6:30-7am, and you drive west through the Rift Valley escarpment and Ngorongoro Highlands, stopping for lunch near Naabi Hill Gate. Enter Serengeti National Park and game drive your way to camp — usually arriving late afternoon with elephants, giraffe, zebra and big cats on the way. Overnight in a budget tented camp or public campsite inside or near the park boundary (shared or twin tent, basic hot-water bucket shower).

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle (included in safari package); Arusha arrival transfer by shared shuttle ~£10-15

🛏Budget tented camp / public campsite near Serengeti (approx £20-30 pp sharing, part of the shared safari package)

  • →Shared 4x4 game drive through Ngorongoro Highlands
  • →Naabi Hill Gate viewpoint
  • →Afternoon game drive into the Serengeti plains
~£230
Day 2

Full day game driving in the Serengeti

Serengeti National Park

Full day out in the Serengeti with a packed lunch, heading toward the Seronera Valley for the year-round resident wildlife (lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena) or, in season (roughly June-October), north toward the Grumeti/Western Corridor or Mara River for the wildebeest migration. Ask the guide whether a Seronera-area walking safari or a Maasai boma visit is possible as an add-on (extra £20-40). Back to camp for dinner and an early night — game drives start at sunrise.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle for the day

🛏Budget tented camp / public campsite, Serengeti (approx £20-30 pp sharing)

  • →Sunrise to sunset game drives in Serengeti
  • →Packed-lunch picnic in the park
  • →Optional Maasai village visit or walking safari (~£20-40 extra)
~£150
Day 3

Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater rim

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Slow morning game drive out of the Serengeti, then drive southeast into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stop at Olduvai Gorge and the Shifting Sands (entry ~£6-10) if the group agrees. Climb to the crater rim where it's cold at night — bring a fleece. Overnight in a simple rim-area guesthouse or budget lodge outside the conservation area (the cheaper operators use lodges such as Ngorongoro Economy Lodge or Karatu guesthouses rather than a rim lodge); expect cold showers and basic rooms but spectacular views.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle

🛏Budget guesthouse in Karatu or Ngorongoro rim area (approx £25-35 pp sharing)

  • →Morning game drive out of Serengeti
  • →Olduvai Gorge museum stop (~£8)
  • →Evening at the crater rim viewpoint
~£140
Day 4

Down into the Ngorongoro Crater, then back to Arusha

Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha

Early 5:30am start to descend the crater road at first light — the best game viewing of the trip, with black rhino, huge elephant bulls, flamingo at Lake Magadi and dense lion prides. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then climb out mid-afternoon and drive the 3-4 hours back to Arusha, arriving roughly 5-7pm. If you're catching a flight or the Kilimanjaro shuttle, plan for a ~£10-15 shared shuttle from Arusha or a night in a £15-20 hostel dorm in Arusha.

🚌Shared 4x4 safari vehicle back to Arusha; optional shared shuttle to Kilimanjaro Airport ~£10-15

🛏None included (Arusha hostel dorm ~£15-20 if you stay the night)

  • →Sunrise descent into Ngorongoro Crater
  • →Full crater-floor game drive (rhino, lion, flamingo at Lake Magadi)
  • →Picnic lunch at Ngoitokitok hippo pool
~£180

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Northern Tanzania Safari: Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £700 per person for 4 days in Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Kilimanjaro Wonders Expedition Safari?+

Yes — Kilimanjaro Wonders Expedition Safari charges around £1,100 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £700 — a saving of roughly £400 (36%) per person.

How long is the Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro) trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Northern Tanzania (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
