A self-launched version of G Adventures' 5-day Ban Jabo hilltribe trek: trek between Lahu and Karen villages outside Chiang Mai, sleep in basic village huts and homestays, meet a shaman, and enter the enormous Tham Lod cave by bamboo raft. Instead of a fixed group departure, you book a local licensed trekking guide/operator in Chiang Mai (or arrange village homestays via local guesthouses), take a public songthaew or local bus to the trailheads, and pay villagers directly for homestays and meals. Costs are approximate backpacker rates and assume you share guide and transport costs where possible.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Chiang Mai & sort your trek logistics

Chiang Mai

Arrive in Chiang Mai and check into a guesthouse in the Old City or near Tha Phae Gate. Spend the afternoon arranging your trek: walk into one of the many local trekking agencies around Chang Phuak or Moon Muang Road and book a licensed English-speaking guide for the village route (ask specifically for the Huay Nam Dung → Ban Pha Mon → Ban Muang Pam → Ban Jabo route). Confirm whether the guide can arrange village homestays and meals directly with the Lahu and Karen families. Alternatively, contact guesthouses in Ban Jabo or Pai-based operators in advance by phone/Line. Evening: night market food and an early night — you leave at dawn.

🚌Arrival transfer by red songthaew from Chiang Mai airport or train/bus station, ~£2

🛏Guesthouse in Chiang Mai Old City (dorm or private room), ~£12

  • →Book local trekking guide

Drive to the trailhead & trek to Ban Pha Mon (Lahu village)

Huay Nam Dung National Park → Ban Pha Mon

Meet your guide early and take a public songthaew or local bus towards the Huay Nam Dung National Park trailhead (about 1.5–2 hours from Chiang Mai). Pay the national park entry fee (~£3–4) and start trekking through farmland, bamboo and teak forest. Your guide will point out bush food and medicinal plants along the way. Stop for a packed or village-cooked lunch, then continue through rice fields and valleys to Ban Pha Mon, a Lahu village. Help your hosts prepare dinner, try your hand at weaving or embroidery, or opt for a traditional Lahu massage (~£5).

Breakfast with your hosts, then trek between villages over farmland and grassland, climbing steadily to the ridge line with big views across the hills. Learn about bush medicine and seasonal fruits from your guide before a lunch stop with a swim in a stream. Continue on to Ban Muang Pam, a Karen village, and settle into your homestay. In the evening, ask your guide to arrange a chat with the village shaman about traditional medicine, or join the local kids for a kickabout — both are free and genuinely the highlight of the trip.

Ban Muang Pam → Tham Lod → Ban Jabo

After breakfast, leave the village and trek beside the Pam River through lush jungle. Reach Tham Lod, the 1,666m-long cave system — hire a bamboo raft with a local rafter (roughly £8–12 per raft, shared) to float into the different chambers, and hire a local lamp-carrier guide if not included. After the cave and lunch, take a local songthaew (or a shared pickup, ~£6) to Ban Jabo, a Black Lahu village perched on a ridge. Spend the afternoon learning about Lahu culture and traditional crafts, then help cook dinner using regional ingredients and methods over the fire.

After breakfast with your hosts, say goodbye and take a public songthaew down to the main road, then a local bus or shared minivan back to Chiang Mai (about 3 hours, ~£6–8), arriving early-to-mid afternoon. If you're heading onward to Pai, ask about hopping off en route — the road north passes straight by.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Ban Jabo Thailand Hilltribe Trek — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £268 per person for 5 days in Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai & Mae Hong Son Hills). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £549 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £268 — a saving of roughly £281 (51%) per person.

How long is the Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai & Mae Hong Son Hills) trip?+

This itinerary runs 5 days, covering 5 day-by-day stops through Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai & Mae Hong Son Hills).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, culture trip through Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai & Mae Hong Son Hills), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
