Walking Northern Tuscany: Self-Launched Hiking Adventure

Make your way to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, the main hub of the Garfagnana valley. From Pisa Airport, take the regional train towards Lucca (£5–7, ~30 mins), then the scenic Garfagnana railway (Ferrovia della Garfagnana) north to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (£5–8, ~1.5 hrs). Book a room at a local agriturismo or guesthouse on the outskirts — the area has several family-run options with home-cooked dinners. Spend the evening exploring the medieval town centre and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local trattoria.

Head into the Orecchiella Natural Reserve for a full-day hike up to the distinctive rocky peak of Pania di Corfino (1601m). Download the trail on Komoot or AllTrails beforehand (route CAI 5017/nearby waymarked paths). Take a local bus or taxi from Castelnuovo towards the park visitor centre at Orecchiella (~20 mins). A stunning hike onto the vast limestone plateau of Monte Sumbra (1764m) in the Apuan Alps. Arrange a taxi or drive from your base towards the Vianova area to reach the trailhead. The waymarked CAI trail climbs steeply through forest before opening onto an extraordinary bare limestone karst landscape with sweeping views across the Garfagnana valley. For confident hikers, continue to the true summit. Download the Komoot route before setting off and bring extra layers — it can be cold and windy on the plateau. Pack your own picnic lunch.

A more relaxed walking day exploring the valley floor and its medieval villages — this is a perfect trail for navigating independently on foot. Walk from your accommodation through countryside paths to the hilltop village of Castiglione, then descend to the thermal spa town of Pieve Fosciana. Continue into Castelnuovo di Garfagnana for free exploration time — visit the Rocca fortress, browse the weekly market if timing aligns, and pick up local specialities like biroldo sausage and farro. Take the scenic Garfagnana railway one stop to Villetta San Romano, then walk the short 20-minute trail back to your base.

A full free day to explore further afield — exactly as in the original tour. The Garfagnana railway connects directly to the wider Tuscan rail network, making all these destinations reachable independently. Recommended option: Lucca is the easiest and most rewarding — walk the intact Renaissance city walls (free), visit Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, and browse the excellent local restaurants (try Trattoria da Leo for classic Lucchese cooking). Alternatively, train to Pisa (add 30 mins) for the Piazza dei Miracoli. For Cinque Terre, take the train to La Spezia and hop the Cinque Terre Express along the coast. Florence requires an early start but is doable for a half-day visit — see Michelangelo's David at the Galleria dell'Accademia (book online in advance, ~£14).

One of the most dramatic hikes of the week: Monte Forato (1223m) is famous for its extraordinary natural double rock arch — a rare geological feature with views framed through the hole in the mountain. Take a local bus or taxi to Fornovolasco village (the trailhead). The waymarked CAI trail follows a river footpath through a dramatic gorge, passing ruins of an ancient chestnut mill and drying house, then climbs steeply through mixed forest and open meadows rich with alpine flowers. A second free day to use as you like — revisit a favourite from Day 5, explore somewhere new, or rest your legs. If you haven't yet visited Lucca, today is ideal. Alternatively, if Cinque Terre is on the bucket list, the coastal villages of Vernazza and Manarola are particularly beautiful. For walkers with energy to spare, there are excellent shorter valley trails directly from the base into the Garfagnana hills — no transport needed. Local bicycle hire is another relaxing option for exploring country lanes.
