Magical Norwegian Fjords: Self-Launched Oslo to Bergen
7 days · Norway (Oslo, Flåm, Balestrand, Bergen)
V.O.S – Vision of Scandinavia charges £1,100
No-markup version: ~£665 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of V.O.S – Vision of Scandinavia's 7-day "Magical Fjord Adventure", rebuilt for independent travellers. You'll ride the famous Bergensbanen railway from Oslo to Myrdal, take the panoramic Flåmsbana down to the fjord village of Flåm, cruise the Sognefjord and Aurlandsfjord by public express boat to Balestrand, then finish in Bergen with a fast ferry and a poke around the Bryggen wharf. Every leg is bookable yourself (Vy trains, Norled/Flåm ferries, Skyss local transport) and every activity has a cheap or free DIY equivalent. Prices are approximate August–June season estimates at budget/backpacker rates; Norway is expensive, so food and accommodation are the big savings opportunities — hostel kitchens and supermarket picnic lunches go a long way.
Day-by-day
Arrive Oslo — settle into the city
Oslo
Land at Gardermoen and skip the airport hotel: take the Vy regional train (R11/R12) straight into Oslo S in about 25 minutes for roughly £9-10 (cheaper than the Flytoget express at ~£17). Check into a central hostel or budget hotel near Karl Johans gate, then use the afternoon to wander Karl Johans Street down to the Royal Palace, and finish with an evening stroll along the Oslo Fjord waterfront at Aker Brygge and the Opera House roof (free to walk on). Grab dinner from a Rema 1000 or Kiwi supermarket or a cheap kebab/pizza spot — eating out in Oslo is the fastest way to blow the budget.
🚌Vy regional train Gardermoen → Oslo S, ~£9-10, 25 min. City centre is walkable.

Oslo museums and viewpoints, DIY style
Oslo
Buy a 24-hour Oslo Pass (~£42) or, cheaper, just pay as you go. Best value combo: take the T-bane Line 1 to Holmenkollen for the ski jump viewpoint (free to look, ~£13 to enter the ski museum), then bus to Bygdøy for the Fram Museum (~£13) and the Viking Ship Museum area. In the afternoon head to Vigeland Sculpture Park — completely free and the best-value sight in Oslo. If you're a museum person, the Munch Museum (~£16) or the National Museum (~£16, free on some days) are excellent. Self-guided walking tours are free via GuruWalk or a downloaded audio guide, replacing the operator's £90+ guided city tour.
🚌Oslo T-bane/bus/tram single tickets ~£3.50 each, or 24h Ruter pass ~£10. Consider the Oslo Pass if doing 3+ paid museums.

Oslo / Flåm / Balestrand
The big day. Book the early Bergensbanen train from Oslo S to Myrdal (~5 hours, ~£30-45 if booked in advance on vy.no — book early, prices rise sharply). At Myrdal switch to the Flåmsbana panoramic train down to Flåm (~1 hour, ~£45-50, book on the same Vy site or flamsbana.no). Leave time in Flåm for the fjord-side walk and the Flåm Railway Museum (free) — past travellers wished they'd had more than an hour here, so take a later boat if you can. Then board the Norled express boat from Flåm through Aurlandsfjord and the Sognefjord to Balestrand (~1.5-2 hours, ~£35-45, book on norled.no). Overnight in Balestrand — this tiny fjord village is the highlight of the trip.
🚌Vy train Oslo S → Myrdal ~£30-45; Flåmsbana Myrdal → Flåm ~£45-50; Norled express boat Flåm → Balestrand ~£35-45

- →Flåmsbana panoramic train
- →Flåm Railway Museum (free)

Balestrand and the Fjærland glaciers
Balestrand / Fjærland
A slow fjord day. In summer (roughly June to mid-September) take the local Fjærland ferry/boat across the fjord and use the seasonal glacier bus (Breførarlaget) up to Bøyabreen and Supphellebreen glacier arms, with a stop at the Norwegian Glacier Museum (~£12 entry). Total cost for transport and museum usually lands around £45-60 booked directly rather than through a package. Out of season, stay local: hike the Balestrand–Esefjord coastal path, visit the free St. Olaf's Church (the inspiration for a Disney castle) and the Sogn Art Gallery, and swim or paddle at the beach. Self-cater dinner or try the local cider and salmon from the village shop.
🚌Fjærland ferry + seasonal glacier bus ~£35-45 return; otherwise walking

Balestrand → Bergen by fast boat
Balestrand / Bergen
Take the Norled express boat from Balestrand to Bergen (~4 hours, ~£50-65) — it threads out through the fjords and is a sightseeing trip in its own right. Arrive in Bergen, check into a hostel in or near the Sentrum/Nordnes area, then spend the late afternoon on the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf, the Fish Market, and the free walk up to Fjellveien for a classic town view. Skip the Magic Ice Bar (poorly rated by past travellers) and instead grab a beer at one of the student-friendly bars or a coffee in the Skostredet area.

Bergen: Mount Fløyen and the fjord islands
Bergen
Ride the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen (~£13 return, or hike up free in 45 minutes and ride down one way). From the top there are free marked trails through the forest. In the afternoon pick one: the 3-hour Mostraumen fjord cruise from Zachariasbryggen (~£55-60, book direct with Rødne), or a much cheaper DIY alternative using the public Skyss ferry/express boat out to islands like Kleppestø or Askøy for a fraction of the price. A Bergen City Card (~£40) only pays off if you're doing several museums — Rosenkrantz Tower, Haakon's Hall and St Mary's Church are the best-value cluster, all within the Bryggen area.
🚌Fløibanen funicular ~£13 return; Skyss local ferry/light rail singles ~£3.50-4.50; optional Mostraumen cruise ~£55-60

Bergen
Morning free for a final Bryggen coffee, a loop of Lille Lungegårdsvann lake, or the free KODE art museum grounds before heading to Bergen Airport (Flesland). The Bybanen light rail runs from the city centre to the airport in about 45 minutes for roughly £4 — far cheaper than the airport express bus (~£10) or a taxi (~£40). If your flight is later, consider a quick swim or sauna at Nordnes Sjøbad. Fly home or continue onward to the western fjords.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Magical Norwegian Fjords: Self-Launched Oslo to Bergen cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £665 per person for 7 days in Norway (Oslo, Flåm, Balestrand, Bergen). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with V.O.S – Vision of Scandinavia?+
Yes — V.O.S – Vision of Scandinavia charges around £1,100 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £665 — a saving of roughly £435 (40%) per person.
How long is the Norway (Oslo, Flåm, Balestrand, Bergen) trip?+
This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Norway (Oslo, Flåm, Balestrand, Bergen).
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, culture, hiking trip through Norway (Oslo, Flåm, Balestrand, Bergen), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
