A self-launched version of G Adventures' day tour to Ecuador's most famous indigenous market. Instead of a private van and paid guide, you take a public bus or shared minivan north from Quito to Otavalo, arriving in time for the Plaza de Ponchos market, then hop a local bus or shared taxi to the leather town of Cotacachi and finish at Peguche Waterfall or the crater lake of Cuicocha. Everything is bookable on the day — no tour group, no fixed itinerary, and roughly a quarter of the price.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Quito → Cayambe → Otavalo Market → Cotacachi → Peguche/Cuicocha → Quito

Otavalo & Cotacachi, Imbabura Province

Start early (by 06:30) and make your way to Terminal Carcelén in north Quito — take a taxi or local Trolebús/Metrobús connection. From Carcelén, catch one of the frequent buses along the Panamericana north toward Otavalo/Ibarra (~2–2.5 hrs, about £2–3). Ask the driver to drop you in Cayambe for a 20-minute stop to try the town's famous bizcochos (cheese biscuits with dulce de leche) from a local bakery. Reboard the next bus to Otavalo (~45 mins). Arrive mid-morning and spend 2–3 hours at the Plaza de Ponchos handicraft market — textiles, alpaca blankets, ponchos and jewellery — plus the smaller food and animal market a few blocks away. Have lunch at one of the market-side comedores (a plate of llapingachos or hornado with juice is £3–5). Around 13:30 take a local bus or shared taxi to Cotacachi (~20 mins, £0.50–1) for the leather workshops and craft shops on Calle 10 de Agosto. In the afternoon choose one: Peguche Waterfall (bus/shared taxi ~15 mins from Otavalo, small entry-free forest walk, ~1 hr) or Cuicocha crater lake (taxi from Cotacachi ~£10–12 return, small £2–3 entry, lakeside walk and viewpoints). Head back to Otavalo or Cotacachi bus station by 17:00 and take the direct bus back to Quito Carcelén (~2.5 hrs, £2–3), then a city bus/taxi to your hostel. Wear layers — Imbabura mornings are cold and it can rain in the afternoon.

🚌Local bus/shared minivan Quito (Terminal Carcelén) → Cayambe → Otavalo (~£4–6 return for the full loop); local bus or shared taxi Otavalo ↔ Cotacachi (~£1); taxi to Cuicocha (~£10–12 return) or bus/shared taxi to Peguche (~£1); optional taxi from your hostel to Carcelén (~£3–4)

🛏Return to your own Quito hostel/hotel (e.g. dorm in La Mariscal or Centro Histórico, £8–15/night) — no overnight included on this tour

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

How long is the Otavalo & Cotacachi, Ecuador trip?+

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, backpacker, budget trip through Otavalo & Cotacachi, Ecuador, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
