A DIY version of Bamba Travel's 4-day Puerto Maldonado budget eco-lodge trip. Instead of paying a packaged group tour price, you book a rustic riverside jungle lodge or hostel in Puerto Maldonado directly (many lodges sell the same boat trips, Lake Sandoval permits, canopy walkway and night caiman excursions à la carte or as cheap add-on packs), sort your own boat transfers down the Madre de Dios, and pick up local guides for the big-ticket activities. Everything the original includes — Monkey Island, Lake Sandoval, the 30m canopy walkway and zip-line, kayaking and piranha fishing — is bookable yourself through the lodge, Puerto Maldonado tour offices or GetYourGuide. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP per person and exclude international flights to Lima and the domestic flight to Puerto Maldonado.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Puerto Maldonado — boat to the lodge, Monkey Island & night caiman hunt

Puerto Maldonado / Madre de Dios River

Land at Puerto Maldonado's Padre Aldamiz airport (flights from Lima or Cusco, book yourself on LATAM or Sky — roughly £60-100 one way, not included). Take a mototaxi (£1-2) into town, drop your big bag, and buy a few litres of water and snacks at the market. Around midday head to the river port (Puerto Capitania) and take a shared/collective boat or lancha down the Madre de Dios River to your lodge — most budget lodges along the river sell seats on their own supply boat for £8-15 per person each way, or arrange the whole transfer when you book. Check into a rustic riverside eco-lodge or the budget rooms at a Puerto Maldonado hostal if you'd rather stay in town. In the afternoon, walk the short trail to a river-island viewpoint to spot brown capuchin and squirrel monkeys, then after dark head out with a local guide (bookable at the lodge or any tour office on Av. León Velarde, £10-15) for a spotlight boat trip hunting caimans and capybaras on the riverbanks.

🚌Flight to Puerto Maldonado (excluded), mototaxi to town £1-2, shared river boat to lodge £8-15 each way

🛏Rustic riverside eco-lodge (fan room, shared bathroom) or budget hostal in Puerto Maldonado — £18-25/night

Day 2

Lake Sandoval — jungle trek, rowing boats and giant river otters

Lake Sandoval, Tambopata National Reserve

This is the day the packaged tours charge the most for, and you can do it independently. Lake Sandoval sits inside the Tambopata National Reserve and requires a reserve entry permit plus an authorised local guide — buy the permit and guide at the SERNANP office or through your lodge/tour office in Puerto Maldonado for roughly £25-35 per person (the reserve has a daily visitor cap, so book a day or two ahead). Take a shared boat (about 30-40 min, £6-10) to the Sandoval trailhead, then trek the ~3 km boardwalk and trail through primary jungle to the lake. At the lake, hire a rowing boat and guide to glide across the water looking for hoatzins, cormorants, howler and squirrel monkeys, giant river otters and caimans (rowing boat hire usually bundled with the guide, £8-12). Return to the lodge for dinner, then join an optional guided night walk (£8-12) to see frogs, insects and tarantulas.

Day 3

Canopy walkway, zip-line, kayaking and piranha fishing

Madre de Dios River / canopy walkway site

Book a half-day canopy and adventure package directly with a Puerto Maldonado operator (several local outfits run the same 30-metre hanging walkway and zip-line; expect £40-55 per person including boat transfer, or look for a combo via GetYourGuide/Klook before you go). Cross the river by boat, climb into the canopy at around 30 m and spend an hour with binoculars on toucans, macaws and mixed flocks. Then clip in for a short zip-line through the treetops with an instructor. In the afternoon, hire a kayak from the lodge or operator (£8-12) for a paddle on the Madre de Dios, and finish with artisanal fishing from the bank or a small boat — piranha and catfish are the usual catch, and your lodge will often cook it for dinner for a few soles.

🛏Rustic riverside eco-lodge or budget hostal — £18-25/night

  • →30 m canopy walkway birdwatching

Day 4

Sunrise on the river and boat back to Puerto Maldonado

Puerto Maldonado

Wake early for a last coffee on the riverbank and a short self-guided dawn walk around the lodge trails — the best birding hour of the day. Pack up, settle any lodge extras, and take the morning shared boat back upriver to Puerto Maldonado (allow 45-90 min depending on lodge location, £8-15). If your flight to Lima or Cusco isn't until later, leave your bag at the hostal and wander the Mercado Central for a cheap menu del día (£3-4) and last-minute jungle souvenirs. Budget an hour buffer at the airport — the packaged tour finishes around 2pm and the same timing works fine on your own.

🚌Shared boat back to Puerto Maldonado £8-15, mototaxi to airport £1-2

🛏None (departure day)

  • →Sunrise birdwalk
  • →Mercado Central food stop
~£20

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Puerto Maldonado Amazon Budget Eco-Lodge: 4 Days from Puerto Maldonado cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £355 per person for 4 days in Puerto Maldonado & the Tambopata Amazon, Peru. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Bamba Travel?+

Yes — Bamba Travel charges around £400 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £355 — a saving of roughly £45 (11%) per person.

How long is the Puerto Maldonado & the Tambopata Amazon, Peru trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Puerto Maldonado & the Tambopata Amazon, Peru.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Puerto Maldonado & the Tambopata Amazon, Peru, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
