G Adventures charges £5,300

£2,790saved per person (53%)

No-markup version: ~£2,510 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A solo-traveller-friendly, self-launched version of the 16-day Kigali-to-Nairobi gorilla, chimp and safari circuit. You'll book your own gorilla, golden monkey and chimpanzee permits directly with the park authorities (the big fixed cost — gorilla permits run ~£1,150 in Rwanda high season), stay in budget guesthouses and hostels, use local buses, shared 4x4 transfers and scheduled safari vehicles, and hire guides/porters locally on trekking days. Every highlight of the original — Nyamirambo, the Genocide Memorial, Volcanoes NP, Kalinzu chimps, Queen Elizabeth NP, Kazinga Channel, the equator, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and the Masai Mara — is included, but at ground-level prices. Costs are approximate and exclude international flights; build in buffer for permit price changes and tipping.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Kigali

Kigali, Rwanda

Land at Kigali International Airport and take a metered taxi or Yego (Rwanda's ride-hailing app) into town — expect £4-6. Check into a hostel or budget guesthouse in Kiyovu or Remera (£12-18/night). Kigali is compact, clean and safe to walk by day. Pick up a local SIM (MTN/Airtel, ~£2 with data), draw Rwandan francs from an ATM, and stock up on snacks. Evening: casual dinner at a local brochette spot (~£4). If you haven't already, confirm your Volcanoes National Park gorilla and golden monkey permits online in advance — trekking slots sell out months ahead.

Then walk the lively Nyamirambo neighbourhood — book a Nyamirambo Women's Centre community walk and local lunch directly with the centre (~£18-25), it's the same responsible-tourism partner the big operators use. After lunch take a Volcano Express or Ritco bus from Nyabugogo bus station to Musanze (~2.5 hrs, ~£4-5). Check into a guesthouse in Musanze town (£15-22). Arrange your permit pickup and guide briefing at the park HQ for the next day.

The highlight day. Gorilla permit must be booked directly via RDB well in advance — budget ~£1,150 in high season (~£900 in low season); prices change so check the RDB site. Hire a porter at the trailhead (~£12-15, strongly recommended and it supports local families) and tip your guide. Trek 1-6 hours through dense jungle, then one unforgettable hour with a gorilla family. Return for lunch, then do an afternoon village walk around Kinigi (~£10 booking through the community tourism office) to see rural Rwandan daily life. Note: 15+ age restriction, and you'll be turned away (no refund) if visibly ill — an important rule protecting the gorillas.

This is a long, bumpy travel day (~7-8 hrs total). Alternatively, pre-book a private cross-border transfer (~£70-90 split between 2-3 travellers). Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched East Africa Gorilla & Safari Experience cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £2,510 per person for 16 days in Rwanda, Uganda & Kenya. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £5,300 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £2,510 — a saving of roughly £2,790 (53%) per person.

How long is the Rwanda, Uganda & Kenya trip?+

This itinerary runs 16 days, covering 16 day-by-day stops through Rwanda, Uganda & Kenya.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, hiking trip through Rwanda, Uganda & Kenya, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
