Kota Kinabalu

Sort out any last-minute kit you need for the Mt Kinabalu climb (e.g. gloves, warm layers). Pre-book your Mt Kinabalu climbing permit and Laban Rata accommodation well in advance via the Sabah Parks website (sutera-sanctuary.com or sabahtourism.com) — permits sell out months ahead.

🚌Arrive by international or domestic flight into Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI). Grab a Grab taxi or fixed-rate airport taxi to the city centre (~£5-8).

Head to Kinabalu Park HQ (91km from KK). Spend the afternoon exploring the botanical gardens and lowland rainforest trails around the park — these are included in your park entry fee. Acclimatise, rest well, and eat a solid dinner before tomorrow's big climb. Register your permit and collect your climbing pass at the park office.

🚌Take a shared minibus from Kota Kinabalu's Inanam bus terminal or Padang Merdeka bus stop to Ranau — alight at Kinabalu Park entrance. Journey ~2-2.5hrs, cost ~£3-5. Or book a shared taxi for a faster, slightly pricier option (~£8-10).

Summit Mount Kinabalu & Poring Hot Springs

Mount Kinabalu / Poring Hot Springs

Wake at 2am for the summit push to Low's Peak (4,095m) — the highest point in Southeast Asia. It's 2-3 hours of steep, rope-assisted scrambling in the dark and cold. Reach the summit in time for a breathtaking sunrise above the clouds. Descend back to Laban Rata for a rest and breakfast, then continue the long descent (5-7hrs on the knees!) to park HQ. Transfer to Poring Hot Springs (~40km away) for a well-earned soak in the sulphuric outdoor pools. Overnight near Poring.

~£75
Day 5

Poring to Sukau / Kinabatangan River

Sukau, Kinabatangan River

Today is a travel day deeper into Sabah's interior. Make your way to Sukau, a small village on the banks of the Kinabatangan River — one of Malaysia's most biodiverse wildlife corridors. The river is home to proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, hornbills, macaques, and saltwater crocodiles. Check into your jungle lodge and, if energy allows, book an optional evening wildlife cruise along the river as the light fades — this is often the best time to spot wildlife.

🚌Take a local bus or shared taxi from Ranau/Poring to Sandakan bus terminal (~£5-8, ~2.5hrs). From Sandakan, arrange a shared minibus or prebook a transfer to Sukau (~£8-12, ~1.5hrs). Some jungle lodges offer pickup from Sandakan.

🛏Uncle Tan's Wildlife Camp, Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge, or Si-Amil Island budget lodges in Sukau — jungle lodges in this area typically £20-35/night including meals

  • Travel from Poring/Ranau to Sandakan, then onward to Sukau
  • Check in to riverside jungle lodge
  • Optional evening wildlife cruise on the Kinabatangan River (~£10-15 per person)
~£65
Day 6

Kinabatangan River Wildlife Cruises

Sukau, Kinabatangan River

A full day dedicated to Kinabatangan River wildlife spotting. Take an early morning boat cruise — dawn is peak wildlife activity time — scanning the riverbanks for proboscis monkeys, Bornean pygmy elephants, oriental pied hornbills, and the occasional crocodile. Enjoy free time in the afternoon. Take an afternoon/evening cruise as the light turns golden. Local boatmen can be booked directly through your lodge or independently at the riverbank for a fraction of what commercial tours charge.

🚌No major transport today — all activities are river-based.

🛏Same jungle lodge as Day 5

  • Morning wildlife boat cruise on the Kinabatangan River (~£10-15 per person)
  • Afternoon free time — explore the jungle trails around Sukau village
  • Evening wildlife river cruise (~£10-15 per person)
  • Optional: Night cruise for nocturnal wildlife spotting (~£8-12)
~£60
Day 7

Sukau to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre

Sepilok, Sandakan

Head to Sepilok, just outside Sandakan, to visit the world-famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (SORC). Orangutans rescued from illegal captivity or orphaned in the wild are rehabilitated here before being released back into the jungle. Watch the twice-daily feeding sessions from the viewing platform (8am and 3pm — time your arrival for one of these). While in the area, also visit the adjacent Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, the only such facility in the world. Overnight in Sepilok or Sandakan.

🚌Local bus or shared minibus from Sukau/Sandakan bus terminal to Sepilok junction (~£2-4). From the junction it's a short walk or grab ride to SORC.

🛏Sepilok Jungle Resort budget rooms or Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat — £12-22/night. Alternatively, budget guesthouses in Sandakan town (~£10-18/night).

  • Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre visit — feeding platform (entry ~£8-10)
  • Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre visit (entry ~£5-7)
  • Explore Sepilok Nature Resort grounds or Rainforest Discovery Centre (~£3-5)
~£50
Day 8

Turtle Island Overnight — Libaran Island

Libaran Island (Turtle Islands)

Today you head to Libaran Island (a more affordable alternative to the more commercial Selingan Turtle Island). Both offer overnight stays where you can witness green turtles coming ashore at night to lay eggs, and potentially release baby turtles. Libaran is managed by local community operators and tends to be cheaper and less crowded. You'll need to arrange this in advance — book through a Sandakan-based operator such as Sabah Holidays or Wildlife Expedition. The experience is magical: watching giant turtles nest under the stars is unforgettable.

🚌Speedboat from Sandakan jetty to Libaran Island — usually included in the island package (~45 mins each way).

🛏Libaran Island turtle island chalets (basic but atmospheric) — typically £35-55/night inclusive of boat transfer and ranger programme. Book via Sandakan operators such as Sabah Holidays or SI Tours.

  • Boat transfer to Libaran Island from Sandakan jetty (~45 mins)
  • Snorkelling around the island's reef
  • Evening turtle nesting observation with ranger
  • Baby turtle release (seasonal/luck-dependent)
~£70
Day 9

Return to Kota Kinabalu via Sandakan

Sandakan / Kota Kinabalu

Return by boat to Sandakan in the morning. Before your afternoon flight, visit the Sandakan Memorial Park — a sobering and important tribute to the prisoners of war who died on the infamous Sandakan Death Marches of WWII. It's a short taxi ride from the town centre and entry is free. Optionally explore Sandakan town's heritage trail or the English Tea House with its panoramic hilltop views. Take the short afternoon domestic flight from Sandakan Airport back to Kota Kinabalu.

🚌Speedboat back to Sandakan jetty (included in island package). Grab taxi to Sandakan Airport (~£5). Domestic flight Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu with MASwings or AirAsia — book ahead for £25-45 one way.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Borneo Sabah Adventure: Self-Launched Edition cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £590 per person for 10 days in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,650 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £590 — a saving of roughly £1,060 (64%) per person.

How long is the Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia trip?+

This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, hiking trip through Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
